'F tl 1 --H W -K v 1 Y Yfrwrv l r HISTORY OFFICERS OF THE ADMINISTRATION STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION STUDENT LIFE ORGANIZATIONS FACULTY SENIORS The history of instruction at Westerim New England College dates from 19193 in that year Northeastern University established a Springfield Division which in 1951 became Westerri New England College. As in the case of the parent institution in Boston, the Springfield Division was closely associated with the Young Men's Christian Association, and all classes were held in the Association building until 1959. Following the organi- zational pattern of the University, two divisions were formed, and instruction was begun in a School of Law and a School of Commerce and Finance. The latter became the School of Business in 1931. Again in the pattern and also in the spirit of the mother college, all classes were held in the evening. In 1951 all direct ties with Northeastern University and the Young Men's Christian Association were severed, and on july 17 of that year the institution was incorporated as Westerii New England College. The Massachusetts Board of Collegiate Authority recognized the right of the new college to grant its own degrees, both in course and honorary. Continuity with the past was assured through the use of the same facilities, retention of the same faculty and ad- ministration, and pursuit of the same programs of study. The former Board of Governors agreed as a body to serve as Trustees under the new charter. The high standards of work which had been set by Northeastern were con- tinued and even raised, requirements both for admission and graduation were made more stringent. As the reputation of the College under the new charter. grew, requests were received from industrial leaders for the institution to augment its engineering offerings into full degree programs and also to expand in the area of man- agement. In response to these requests, and in answer to the national need for trained engineers, the Trustees in 1956 successfully applied to the Board of Collegiate Authority for permission to enlarge its program. The School of Engineering and the Graduate Program in Business Administration were opened in September 1956, with all classes still in the evening. The rising tide of young people seeking college admission, however, and the enthusiastic response of industry to the announcement of the new programs led to the inauguration of the Day Division in 1957. Careful development of the Day Division, with the acquisition of new physical facilities and the gather- ing of a competent faculty body, led in 1965 to full accreditation, an achieve- ment not possible for a college limited only to evening operation. Accreditation also brought with it a recommendation for the establishment of a School of Arts and Sciences. This School was opened in 1966. The College is now authorized by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to grant and confer degrees such as are usually conferred in the Commonwealth of Mas- sachusetts, except at the doctorate level. 7-7 M., 1 i1 3,4 EE E E E x . .
