SOCIAL SPORTS ACADEMICS RECALL 1969 Western Military Academy Alton, Illinois Volume XLV BREAKING THE BONDS Realizing that we are in the midst of the most important change which will occur in our lives, we of the Recall staff have attempted to show all phases of this meticulous change, mainly through our yearbook. We wish to convey a deeper sense of man- hood than is apparent in these pages. When going through the annual, one should reflect on himself and the progress he has made during his years at Western. PHYSICAL AWARENESS Through the rivalry shown on the football field, a boy de- velops his sense of competitive spirit which is the basis of Western Culture and our basic economic system. Equipped with these values he is prepared for the future. mCKGROlfflD K R GHE KTCIERB 7 One sought the Holy Grail in legend, one gave his life in Vietnam and many struggled to raise the flag of freedom over Iwo Jima. Once again our eyes turn to the steaming jungles of Asia as Ameri- cans walk their narrow trails. The Sir Galahad window was original- ly dedicated by Col. R. L. Jackson in memory of his three nephews who sacri- ficed their lives in World War II. Now, the latest war in Vietnam has claimed the life of the only surviving son of one of them, Robert Jackson Ellison 23 year old graduate of Western Military Acade- my. Robert Ellison was a photographer in war-torn Asia whose colored pictures appeared on the cover and in an 8 page spread of the March 18, 1968 Newsweek magazine entitled The Agony of Khe Sanh. fc EMORIA MILITARY r OF CAD i j y 4 7 |V ' w ? iv MILITARY Staff C.l Bivouac Coin Companies 12 14 15 16-17 18-22 STAFF MEMBERS Capt. Thomas Croak came to Western in September 1968 as our Senior Army Instructor. He is a 1965 graduate of West Point and a veteran of Vietnam. As a para- trooper and ranger, he has contributed to the development of the Counter Insur- gency Group (COIN) on campus. Sergeant First Class Henry Hileman, a veteran of over twenty years of serv- ice, served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He is the Assistant Senior Army Instructor. A Master Paratrooper, he has been a great asset to COIN. He came to us in the winter of 1968 and will retire in 1969. 12 Sergeant First Class Conrad Carnduff serves on the Commandant ' s Staff and performs as Drill and Operation Sergeant. An expert on the parade field, he helped shape up the corps into a snappy battalion in less than a week. Thanks to his ideas and leadership, we held our first parade seven days after the opening of school. Captain Robert Webber, 1957 graduate of W.M.A. returned in 1959 as Assistant Com- mandant. He fills many positions such as Sup- ply Officer for the Military Department, Coun- selor and friend. Maj. Gen. John Chiles and his charming wife were among the many in- formal visitors the cadet corps enjoyed having on the campus during the year. G.l. CHALLENGES CADET CORPS Government Inspection was a great success last year. Western again preserved the honor rating that is so coveted by the Cadet Corps. Accompanied by Cadet Major Stone and Major Haynes, the G.l. in- spector looks over the barracks, rifles, instruments and reviews the battalion parade. 1968 Potatoes, Packs, Copters and Gunners all build up to a weekend of army maneuvers at campout. 15 C.O.I.N. OUCIGARy B ACC ’69 Spiced with tradition, the 1969 Military Ball proved to be a highlight of cadet social life. In the limelight this year, as every year was the coronation of the Queen and her court, as seen a bove. The cadet officer ' s formed an arch of sabres for the Queen, and saluted the maids of honor. A reception for parents was held in the parlor by Mrs. Ralph Jackson. ,r • OUR PROM 1968... CACOECOC Camelot came to Western ' s Junior Prom — complete with ancient castle, drawbridge, smoking moat, lovely ladies in waiting and knights of the W.M.A. Order all added up to a fun weekend. Cadet Vanzant was chairman of a five man commit- tee including Cadets Ambo, Elghammer, Gatz and Hutton. The class as a whole all worked hard to raise money for the Prom. The elaborate decorations called for much man-power and talent with the hammer and nails. LOWER SCHOOL GRADUATION— ' 68 Saturday, June, 1, 1968 was Lower School Graduation; a day filled with excitement and nervousness knowing that soon we would graduate not only from Lower School but also from childhood to the beginning of manhood. Cadet Slater gave the welcoming speech to parents and teachers. Capt. Cain, the Principal of Lower School, pre- sented awards for academic, military and athletic excellence. Col. Persing presented the diplomas after which Cadet Mc- Kinnon gave the Farewell Speech. A reception attended by parents and friends followed. 30 GRADUATION EXERCISES FINAL FLAG LOWERING SOCIAL DIRECTOR: Mrs. William H. Green talks over plans with Navarro, Asturias, and Frey for the social week- ends coming up at Western. The cadets hold four formal dances a year plus many informal. Mrs. Green also supervises all school teas for parents and the president ' s reception at com- mencement. She has been at W.M.A. since 1943. (Member of thoable Organization) is a service group with- in the corps of cadets. Its members serve wherever or whenever possible to stimulate the growth of moral, social and cultural development of the student body. The organization fosters leadership in the individual as it helps back campus activities. The M.T.O. was founded in 1954- 55 by the club 400 to give recognition to deserving cadets, but by the very nature of the cadet members it has expanded its activities into many fields and has become a symbol for what a good cadet should strive for in all phases of his school life. It has been said that life is a play within a play, but what is life and what is drama? Drama is the mirror of being and life is the reflection of man ' s own actions. In our version of the performing arts we have interpreted man as he truly is. We have per- formed morality, satire, and comedy all with the hopes of exhibiting the ambiguities and mishaps of life. Truly, the many Thespians and Cadespians who have contributed to our program are deserving of the utmost praise and respect. From contemplation one may become wise, but knowledge comes only from study. The Cum Laude group is an academic organization whose sole function is to give recogni- tion to seniors. If a cadet is able to maintain for four years an average of 3.00 or better he becomes a member of the Cum Laude group. When a senior graduates as a member of the Cum Laude group it means he graduates with honors. The words Cum Laude are Latin and therefore fitting to be the name of an academic organization at an academy. Another organization of academic honor is the National Honor Society which is based upon service, honor, and academics. Many of the Cum Laude will try to enter this organiza- tion of greater esteem and honor. 58 C£U‘B 400 1st ROW: Ambo, Vanzant, Keyser. 2nd ROW: McKinnon, Maj. Malone, Reeder, 3rd ROW: Lewis, Dufner. The Club 400 was founded in 1938, when a group of cadets who ' had earned highest academic honors, were guests of Col. R. L. Jackson and Maj. C. L. Persing. The purpose of the club 400 as written in the by-laws is to give cadets special recognition for scholastic excellence. That first meeting set down the by-laws which have changed little through the years. These are (1) any cadet receiving an average of 400 on any six week or semester grade auto- matically becomes an associate member with active membership pending a vote by the active members. (2) any member receiving a grade average below 3.00 may be suspended by a majority vote. (3) A suspended member may become active again by attaining an average of 4.00. Beginning in 1947, the club 400 had made two awards annually. The Award of Progress has gone to the cadet who through hard work and diligence has improved his academic standing the most. The Award of Merit goes to the cadet who has done the most to up- hold the rules and principles of the school. This year the Club 400, with the help of the MTO, has organized and put into effect a new type of academic program, whereby a student who needs help in a specified subject receives free tutelage in that subject by a qualified student tutor. 59 QUILL AND SCROLL 1st ROW: Keyser S, Paulson, Olen, 2nd ROW: Biondo, Stiner W, Huntoon, Ward K, Sanditen. There is always some keen eye, whether we know it or not, scrutinizing the dimensions not only of our physiques but of our minds, abilities and characters. Your training at Western Military Academy has been designed to improve the dimensions of both your mind and character so that when you graduate it can be said that here stands a man ready and eager to shoulder the responsibilities which his particular talents and abilities qualify him to assume. We measure Cadets for uniforms. Our customers measure us in their appraisal of our ability to execute a uniform contract satisfactorily. The fact that we are blessed with a continuity of relationship with our old customers and that each year brings us new customers is the best evidence we can offer of the consistent reliability of our performance. We salute the Graduating Class and wish you all Godspeed in your chosen field of endeavor. IRVING L. WILSON COMPANY One Highland Avenue Bala-Cynwyd, Penna.
