Fuller was presented the Army Commendation for meritorious achievement in Korea. 29 One of our own cadets, Mark Kruger, received a certificate for outstanding military acheivement. Col. R. B. Jackson congratulated Staff Sergeant Fuller who received special awards certificate. SECRETARIAL STAFF Mrs. Clara Brown Assistant Treasurer Mrs. Nina Igo Assistant to Business Manager Miss Helen Mullen Secretary to Superintendent Mrs. Dorothy Tipton Secretary to Headmaster Cum Laude SPECIAL SERVICES Western Military Academy is very much like a village, whose inhabitants are dependent on each other for many of the normal conveniences. On the staff there is a large number of people who serve quietly and without special notice, rendering invaluable service to the Cadet Corps. In a way, these are the people who would be classified under Winston Churchill ' s famous statement: Seldom has there been a time when so many have been served valiantly by so few. It is because of these, as part of the history of this year 1965-66, that we wish to give some special mention. The editors wish to say thank you, with a Cum Laude reference to the following: (1) Miss Helen Gotthardt, the school nurse, wTio is on the sidelines of each athletic event, ready to render service in the event of injury, and who has the not too pleasant job of car- ing for a cadet when he is not feeling well and needs sympathy. Miss Gotthardt and her staff render very valuable services to the whole Cadet Corps and staff. (2) Mr. Walter Laux, who, in his many capacities, is responsible for many of our personal comforts. It is his job to see that the mechanical system is working efficiently. When all goes well, everybody ishappyjalthough, very few people take the time to comment on the efficiency of his staff. (3) Mr. Edward Thomas, the barber, who has a very close contact with every cadet. (4) Mr. George Probst, who is very well accustomed to George do this, and George do that. George is the accommodating, congenial, and good natured man who serves many people on the campus in many ways. (5) Mr. James Mann. Mr. Fix-it , who has lived more than 50 years on this campus and probably has greater contact with alumni and cadets than any living person. (6) Then thereare Major and Mrs. Green who have taken on themselves the parenthood of this Corps. These two wonderful people serve the cadets in a more versatile capacity than anyone else, and not too often are they made to smile and let be known their services are appreciated. (7) Mr. Brady, Mr. Stafford, and the kitchen staff, and Miss Minnie Allison, and many other people, who stand by quietly and serve, and whose only desire is that their services shall be appreciated. The Editors of the Recall wish, in their own humble way, to give recognition in this way to the many who make life at Western comfortable and congenial. 32 PRESIDENT MARK HOWARD KRUGER 7803-33rd Avenue Kenosha, Wisconsin VICE-PRESIDENT THOMAS PATRICK HARPER Monette, Arkansas 34 SECRETARY PETER MALCOLM HILL 1 Debby Lane Belleville, Illinois TREASURER WILLIAM JOHN BOYLE 605 Locust Street Tremont, Illinois MICHAEL WILLIAM BLOCK 1910 North Springdale Road Brookfield, Wisconsin 37 DONALD THOMAS BROWN Route 7, Carter Hill Road Crown Point, Indiana DAVID GEOFFREY COLEMAN Tela R. Mess Call, 90 EIGHTEEN YEARS TO VICTORY by Mark Kruger The 1965 spring athletic season proved highly profitable for the Western Military Academy teams. It was a period of rebuilding for some, an era of experience for others, and an achievement of victory for still another. Every team on campus was young except for the varsity football team; every team on campus sought the dexterity that comes with ex- perience; the mightiest of the gridiron teams sought victory. Captain Dave Thayer was back for his fourth attempt to lead the A football team to a winning season. Major Bresson, around a while longer in the Academy ' s Athletic Sys- tem, provided the leadership for the line. The defense could not have had a better teach- er; Bresson could not have had better students. At an average of 240 pounds per man, ranging from 185 to 290, the concrete wall from Western boasted to be the largest of any team in the State, and ranking high among high school squads in the Nation. The team, made up largely of seniors, carried 46 players. The varsity Raiders charged onto th e field on opening day eager to defeat Dupo. They left the battle ground just as light footed as they had entered--on the top of the 15-0 score. Thus continued the season. The Raiders went on to defeat the Missouri Military Academy Colonels on Eaton Field, 18-7, for the first time in the histories of both schools. They ran over the Country Day Rams 13-7, for the first time in 15 years. And they fin- ished the season with a 5-3 record, the first time in 18 years that the Academy ' s team had molded a winning season from its schedule. It took the Raiders 18 years to develop the strength and dexterity which brought to them a victorious season in 1965-66. Three members of the squad, two seniors and a junior, were chosen to the A.B.C. League All Star Team; Bob Freed, Doke Meredith, and Mac Woodward. Freed also was picked as the all-district guard in the St. Louis area. The B” football squad, in its first season under the command of Sergeant- Major Lishka managed to survive its schedule by pulling out a 2-5 record. The showing by the team cannot be the sole judge of its ability. The B” football squad would have won, had such a prize been given the most improved team on campus award.” The team fought back against great odds to finish the season with a 2-5 record. Considering the inexperience of the squad, the season was highly successful. The littlest of the Big Red , the C” gridiron, under the leadership of Major Joseph Sutton and Captain Walter Krasnansky, finished its schedule with a 3-3 record. Ken Dickin- son, the captain, must be elected the player of the year for the C” team. One could hardly forget his 52 yard run on a quarterback sneak against Lutheran North. The C team is noted for its ability to rack up a winning season almost every year. 92 The Cross Country squad, led by Major Hilgert, and strengthened by such runners as Jim Bennett and Mike Hutter, did not boast of an especially outstanding season, and yet it was a successful one. Hilgert mentioned that it was a year of rebuilding old muscles to previous strength. It was exactly that. The only graduating members of the team are Hutter and the record holding Jim Bennett. The rest will lead the squad next fall. Although no team need feel shame from its record, the varsity gridiron should feel the most pride. After 17 losing consecutive seasons the Raiders pulled through the schedule with a 5-3 record. Three of its members were chosen for the all A.B.C. League team. It defeated M.M.A. for the first time on its home field in the histories of both schools. It has boasted the largest team in recent years. It set records. It contained more players than ever before, most of them seniors. It was the representative Western spoke of, the favorite topic of both cadets and faculty alike. It was the symbol of athletics at W.M.A., the symbol of Western. 1965 Homecoming Queen SPORTS W Club LEFT TO RIGHT: Harper, Brazee, Vogler, Landaeta, Randle, Hill, Coleman, Ross, McCaslin, Waits, Meredith, Paulson, F., Kane, Billingsley, Droege, Freed, Lapping, Dufner, Tabor. Without the financial assistance that has come from parents, business men, in large and small establishments, from friends of cadets, the Recall tradition at Western would have ceased. The price paid by each cadet for this mem- orable volume is less than one-third of the publication expense; the other two-thirds is defrayed by advertising income. It is this kind of support that makes the Recall so deeply indebted to those who have given steady support. This year 1965-66 has been a critical one for this forty-second edition of the Recall. Publication costs have been increasing faster than revenues. Some old standby supports have felt the need to reduce their advertisement space. The staff understands and is grateful for even reduced size in ad space. The honor roll of advertising support includes many civic minded in- dividuals and organizations. The Alton Banking fraternity deserves special praise. The First National Bank and Trust Company and the Alton Banking and Trust Company have been supporters for more than twenty-five years. The Olin Corporation, or its parent, the Western Cartridge Company, is also a senior supporter. The Stratford Hotel has also supported every edition. Many supporters are alumni; they support everything that is good for Western even to enrollment of their sons in the Cadet Corps. Financial support of Western has become a habit. We can not name every family but in the past few years, the names of the Shapiros, the Abt, Springman, etc., must be recognized. These families have given the support that has made the difference between deficit and balanced budgets. These old Western men not only supported, they enlist help from others. The saga of the Recall is a story of mature people lending support to projects which develop confidence in projects of imaginative young men. This is the American way. The Recall is a year of each vivid experience at Western, but it is more, it is another volume in Academy historical record. Therefore, as a gesture of appreciation, the 1966 Recall Staff offers these Magna Cum Laude citations.
