WESTERN MILITARY ACADEMY Alton, Illinois RECALL 1 964 Western Military Academy Alton , Illinois Volume Forty Table of Contents Chapel Window 4. Administration 5. Military 17. Athletics 25. Social Moments 55. Organizations 71. Classes 79. Acknowledgements 121. Senior Directory 122. Patrons 134. This beautiful window was presented by Dr. and Mrs. R. H. Henderson ■of Glenview, III., and by Dr. R. J. Arnold of St. Louis in memory of their sons, who were former cadets. Howard Swain Henderson, ' 41, was killed while a member of the Air Corps in o training accident over Ellington Field, Texas, April I, 1944. Richard Lee Arnold, ' 49, lost his life on August 29, 1948, in a plane accident near St. Louis soon after he had received his pilot ' s license and just before he was to return to Western for his senior year. The Memorial Window is o reproduction of Raphael ' s famous paint- ing. Saint George and the Dragon , depicting youthful chivalry van- quishing the forces of evil. After being owned by various nobles and royal families throughout the years, it is now in the Mellon Collection, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C. Sir Gallahad Window The Sir Ga lahad Panel in the Western Memorial Chapel was presented by Colonel R. L. Jackson. The Panel is dedicated to his nephews. Captain Rex K. Latham, Jr., Lieutenant A. J. Ellison, and Lieutenant James K. Latham, who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II. The Panel is an idealistic treatment portraying Tennyson ' s mythical character — Sir Galahad. This version of the picture was reproduced in antique glass by Emil Frei Co. in St. Louis, Missouri. St. Christopher Window The St. Christopher Panel is the central figure in the series of antique glass reproductions of famous figures in the Cadet Chapel. The original window of St. Christopher by Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610) was repro- duced in antique glass by the famous St. Louis Artist, Emil Frei. St. Christopher is often referred to as the Soldier ' s Guardian Saint. The Iwo Jima Panel in the Western Military Memorial Chapel is dedica- ted to Frank N. Henderson, 1913, who retired as Commandant of Cadets in 1945. The Central Panel commemorates the spirit of the United States Marines in the battle of Iwo Jima on Mount Suribachi, February 23, 1945, in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. The painting was approved by the United States Marine Corps and later it was reproduced in antique glass by Emil Frei in St. Louis. INjMEMORl i fRANKlN.HENDE ' ESTERMMLITARY lAANDAhlr OF CAE Iwo Jima Window mu m I V r.:. - To Our Fathers Build me a son. Oh Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, humble and gentle in victory. Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee and that to know himself is the founda- tion stone of all knowledge. Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under V l I I It i I 1 j the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fall. s Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goals will be high; a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future yet never forget the pas t. And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength. Then I, his father, will dare to whisper I have not lived in vain . • • Academics: MAJOR WILLIAM M. HINTON English A.B. Degree at Birmingham-Southern in 1916. Only half the corps had bothered to come to the pep rally, and now the players didn ' t feel like playing ball. That was the story of the football pep rally before a big game last fall. The Raiders went on to lose nine straight contests and score but six markers in the entire cam- paign. Where should the blame lie? Let ' s start with the players. They fumbled, missed tackles, dropped passes and failed to block, but they weren ' t all bad. At the Burroughs game, not one cadet was calm as Chuck Hyde pulled in a Hal Holshoy pass for the Raider ' s only tally of the year. There was a hushed silence as key members of the team were help- ed from the field. One grad, on seeing Tom Klien in the M.M.A. game, remarked, I ' d like to see Tom when he ' s not all taped up. Both knees had been completely taped through the game. In spite of multiple injuries, Tom Klien be- came an All A-B-C League Fullback for the Raiders. Many people lay the blame at the feet of the corps of cadets and say the reason for defeat was poor morale. I cannot agree. A little bit of-tljem died along with the players in each defeat. They suffered as the players did. Who was to blame, then? It wasn ' t the players, nor the spectators. It couldn ' t have been the cpach. A chunk was taken from his heart in every defeat handed the Raiders. Perhaps all of us are to blame a little. Perhaps none are at all. We ' re like the Dodgers of old and so we say, Just wait till next year. The juniors will return in a few months as seniors and perhaps they will be the Yankee killers and Western will rise again. -Taken from SHRAPNEL article by same writer, 9 Dec 63 A Basketball First Row: Lt. Because from learning stem curiosity, research, and realization. It is in the area of research that American industry can contribute to the development of a richer and longer life for all. Anheuser-Busch, for instance, has a continuing program of financial grants to men of science at schools and colleges all over the country. We have been particularly active in the search for new developments in medicine and nutrition. Our reward? The quiet pride we feel when research melts into realization.
