With the graduation of the class of 1963, Major Bresson will have spent four years as an outstanding Athletic Director. He has spent countless hours scheduling athletic contests for the Red Raiders. Being a very understanding man. Major Bresson has influenced many young cadets to try out for sports. The graduating seniors are grateful to Major Bresson for the help he gave them when they were beginning to participate in school sports. The goodwill of Major Bresson will always be remembered by the Class of 1963. THE 1962 VARSITY FOOTBALL SEASON St. Thomas Aquinas 53 WMA 0 Raider hopes were not high after this stunning loss to the Falcons on Eaton Field. Making his debut as quarterback, Mike Prime showed that the Raider running game would be rough all year. Bill Billingsley, senior fullback, was one of the few standouts in the contest, as he ripped the Falcon line for long gains on powerful off-tackle slants. WMA 25 Lutheran Central 12 League hopes soared after this easy victory over the Crusaders. Bill Billingsley had a field day, breaking the individual scoring record for a quarter with thirteen mark- ers in the second period. Mike Prime added two more TD ' s and Cliff Isenberg tallied on a thirty yard pass from Mike Prime for the shortest Raider mark of the day! John Burroughs 45 WMA 12 The powerful Bombers caught the Raiders on a weak day. One or two breaks in the right direction would have sent the score on a different path. Again, it was Bill Billingsley and Mike Prime, crashing the scoring column for long jaunts. Bill had now totaled 27 points and Mike rose to 24. Lutheran South 28 WMA 7 Sophomore Cliff Isenberg tallied the lone Raider score and Bill Billingsley ended his high school scoring with an extra point, raising his total to twenty-eight markers for the campaign. Cahokia 20 WMA 0 Although dropping this contest by twenty points, it was by far the best game the Raiders played all year. The Comanches were strong and finished the season as the Midwestern Conference champs. Soph Cliff Isenberg and Junior Courtney Jones ran at free will, much to the Comanches ' surprise. Injuries spelled defeat for the Raiders. Courtney Jones, whose fleet feet had kept the offensive machine going, was floored early in the third quarter and saw limited action for the remainder of the season. WMA 14 AAMA 6 The Big Red leaped to the .500 mark as a result of this victory over the Colonels at Mexico, Mo. The Colonels later toppled all other military schools in the area, thus giving the Raiders the best military school football team in the area. Bill Billingsley and Mike Prime tallied for the cadets. Bill ' s TD gave him 21 points and made him one of the areas ' top scorers. Country Day 55 WMA 0 Undoubtedly the worst game of the year, the Raiders hit their low point. The Rams went over them from every angle and handed the Raiders the worst shellacing in the school ' s history. Principia 33 WMA 0 The season came to an end with the League ' s leading scorer. Panther Tuck Spaulding, running at will over the cadets. The seniors ended their high school careers and the juniors looked ahead to next year. The final record, 2-6 .. . AMEN. Injuries to key players were the Raiders ' worst enemies. They knocked out such key men as Courtney Jones, Tom Klien, Conrad Kirby, Kelly Bury, and Darryl Slater. Second stringers, however, did a fine job under the pressure and moved into key roles as the Raiders fought on into the season. A Look at Sports ' 62- ' 63 Darryl Slater 63 Recall Sports Editor Once again, as in the past, the Raider varsity grid candidates returned to Western a week early. This year, though, a new coach greeted them. Capt. Abromovich, last year ' s line coach moved up to the head coaching position and appeared ready to field his first team. Little did they know how the season would go for the 1962 edition of the Red Raiders. The showing was not outstanding, and yet, it was a good team. The Raiders posted a 2-6 mark through the campaign, but this does not show talent. The Raiders boasted of the most powerful one-two punch in the area. Mike Prime, at quarterback, and Bill Billingsley, at fullback, gave the Raiders this punch. Only Country Day, of all Raider opponents, could contain their running game. But, the backfield was not all power. Sophomore Cliff Isenberg, and Juniors Courtney Jones and Mike Tabor were true speed merchants. Of course, they could not function without a good line. Darryl Slater, Tom Klein, Steve Knight, Kelly Bury, and Joe Lange started the season at interior line positions for the Big Red. By the end of the campaign only Joe Lange had not been injured. The second string line became the first, and Juniors Walt Stern and Bill Miller came on the scene. Loyalty, sweat, and blood all lent a hand in making this a good season for the Red Raiders. ■ Cl • The other varsity sport, the Cross Country team, came out on the short end of a long season. The teams they ran were well rounded and powerful. Danny Freeman, though, offset any advantage with his brilliant performances. He lowered the course standard to 8:48.1 over the 1.6 mile Raider course. Danny was the top finisher in the League Meet for the cadets with a fifth place over Principia ' s two mile course. . . . , . - The most successful team on the campus was the smallest of all. ’ The C gridmen posted an outstanding record. They were 5-2 and finished second in the ABC League. Coach Krasnanski ' s boys played well throughout the year and when they did lose, it was only by six points. Les Niemann, Mike White, Wally Erickson, and Norm Smart were backfield standouts, while Dick Miller, Joe Guttierez, and Pepe Quintero headed the line. The B team won but two games, but the Raiders were not that bad. The squad, at times, was as low as eighteen members. A team cannot win unless the talent is supplied. It was not supplied in the right amount for Capt. Voss ' s Raiders. 67 WINTER: At the time of printing, the winter season was stil! young. This review, then, covers but o portion of what is now history . The varsity basketball team, under the direction of coach Darwin Valtor, made a dismal showing at the start of the season, but as it progressed, the brand of basketball that they played slowly became better. The playing recched its peak in time for the Raiders to topple highly ranked Principia. In most contests, even in the early part of the campaign, the Raiders were able to keep up with mos of their opponents after ‘he opening quarter. It seemed that a jinx rode them and it never go off. High scorer was Bob Harper, who averaged 12.5 points pe- game. Dick Stratman six-foot |unior center, averaged almost eleven for the Big Red. The record was a lowly 3-10 after thir een games, but the about face shown in the Prin game also was evident in the next games and it appeared that Western had fielded an entirely new team. The team was well balanced. They had depth at all positions but height was lacking. The tallest man on the team wa: Scott Gamster at six foot two inches tall. Phil Haury and Mike Doucleff were beginning to puli out of slumps as we went to press and they were scoring well again for the Raiders. The B team was entertaining a season much the same as the A . Dave Wherry and Lee Loring were the high scorers for the Raiders while the role of playmaker fell on the shoulders of southpaw Chad Bornes. Grades hurt the Raiders sorely at the close of the semester. A key rebounder was knocked from action and this could have cancelled any hopes for recovery. The ; C teem again fielded a small but powerful team. They had the best basketball mark on campus at printing. Les Niemann., forward for the Little Rea, played outstanding bell all season for the smallest team on campus. The team of the season must have been the rifle team. Sporting a 10-0 reco r d as the presses rolled, SFC Diecher ' s riflemen were tops in the St. Louis League. Tom Burnham had the best score for a match in the League with a 192. The swimming team, too, enjoyed a successful season. Mike Prime lowered the butterfly rtandard more than two seconds, and Darryl Slater wes closing in on the backstroke mark. The record was 7-4 with three meets still to be decided. The soccer teams again modeled in mediocrity. At printing, the ' ' A ' had won but one game and the B was still looking for victory No. 1. Competition was tough, though, as the best teams in the area played the cadets. INDIVIDUAL SPORT RECORDS Football Most points. Year. Joe Dugan, 72 pts., 1947 Yardage, Game. Bud Gouin, 1960, 236 yds.
