The Iwo Jima panel in the Western Military Memorial Chapel is dedicated to Frank N. Hender- son, 1913, who retired as Commandant of Cadets in 1945. The central panel commemorates the spirit of the United States Marines in the battle of Iwo Jima on Mount Suribachi, February 23, 1945, in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. The painting was approved by the United States Marine Corps and later it was reproduced in antique glass by Emil Frei in St. Louis. i Wi tdow Alton, Illinois lA ei£wv Si v GaMaAad Vdle 0 ConienU Appreciation 4 Adminstration 5 Military 15 Senior Class 23 Senior Directory 46 Junior Class 52 Sophomore Class 59 Freshman Class 66 Lower School 71 Commencement 1961 74 Organizations 78 Athletics 84 Social Activities 110 Acknowl edgements 122 Our Advertisers 123 Wi dow The Sir Galahad Panel in the Western Memorial Chapel was presented by Colo- nel R. He Graduates With Us In Spirit Gene Kramer 19 44 - 1962 Gene Kramer was a four year member of our class. He knew everybody, and seemed to fit into every group. He was by no means an out- sider; in fact, he was a strong supporter of our class. He contributed in many ways. He could always be counted on to lend a hand; not only to one individual, but to the whole group as well. BRESSON ATHLETI C DIRECTOR Major Bresson has completed his third year as athletic director for the Red Raiders and has done a wonderful job. He is more than the Athletic Director to many cadets. He is rather an inspiration as he keeps up with the pace by a bit of philosophy he gave to our class when we entered his classroom for the first time three years ago. That is, “Are you helping with the solution, or be- coming a problem?” Major Bresson is West- ern ' s athletic solution. CAPTAIN PAUL M. SUVERKRUP Captain Suverkrup, in his first year as head coach of the Raider Football, Basketball and Track teams has not produced teams with perfect records for he has had little to work with. Just a bare minimum remained from last year’s Football and Basketball teams that finished very high in the league standings. And so Captain Suverkrup has had to undertake the tough job of rebuilding the Raiders this year. He has succeeded in that as the material remaining for next year is in abundance, and the Raiders will be back on top of the league, and under Captain Suverkrup, a very deserving coach that Western is very proud. 85 Tlic “Bobber ' s Roost”, “C” Barracks, shows its spirit before the opening grid battle. The cadets romped over their last six opponents on the schedule, won the ABC League championship outright, by winning the medal meet and having the best (5-0) won-lost record for the standings. In doing this Western ' s Thinclads finished respectably in the County Meet, The East St. Louis Relays, and the District Meet. The Tracksters established four new school records during the season. Bud Gouin turned a 22.2 in the 220 yard dash; Mike Prime rocketed over the 180 yard low hurdles in 21.2; Steve Schreep threw the shot put 51 feet and three inches; and the members of the mile relay, Schoepp, Rothberg, Kaune, and Gouin earned plaques for themselves with a 3:37. 2 performance. In winning the ABC Medal Meet, the cadets took seven first places. Bud Gouin won firsts in the 100 and 220 yard dashes, the broad jump, and he anchored the 880 yard relay to victory. Randy Brick won the Shot Put, and Mike Prime won the 180 yard low hurdles and tied for first in the high jump. Western made up a Sophomore and Freshman team to compete in the Dupo Invitational, and they took first place, smashing a relay record, and Prime in the hurdles lowered another standard, as they carried two handsome trophies back to the campus. Paced by Bud Gouin who took a first in every one of the twenty-one events he competed in during the season, and Co-Captains Drew Schoepp and George Ranney, Western en- joyed one of its greatest track seasons ever. It was a year in which the Raiders proved that all things are equal, as the cadets fell in some areas of athletic participation that they had been high in for several years. It was a year that saw the average squads of the past hold out strong, and a year in which the great teams became greater. All in all it was an exciting year in Western athletic history, and by no means a waste. The graduation of the Class of 1961 left a great number of holes to be filled by inexperienced players, and one can truthfully say that the outlook for next year is more than promising as the Class of 1962 leaves behind an abundance of talent and hardened veterans for next year’s campaigns. To be exact, this was a rebuilding year for a majority of Western squads. The Wrestling team proved to be Western’s only championship outfit, and they turned the trick under the hardest possible practice conditions. The Swimming team was the year’s other standout, as the Raiders turned in another fine winning season, and replaced several old records with new ones. Football and Basketball were down for the year, as there was nothing left over from the preceding teams to be molded into winning units. It was the lack of lettermen that proved to be the biggest contributing factor to the records of these two teams. The Soccer and Cross Country teams suffered equal experience losses, and did not do as well as they normally would have. The Cross Country squad did make some fine showing in several meets. Now that the year is over, let us go back and review the seasons, and see what actually happened in this year. THE FALL: The King of School Sports is a title rightfully given to Western Football teams. This year Football fortunes at WMA were not at the high ebb that they had been in the last three years, but the season was not a total loss, however. The Varsity squad, under coach Suverkrup, started the season with a minimum of seven experienced players from last season, . . which is not even enough for a good first team. So the record of 1-8 can only be contributed to one thing, the lack of experienced players. Terry Bernhard was the team’s leading scorer and ground gainer; Dick Me Candless was chosen on the All ABC-League team, and was also voted team Captain. Bill Elliott carded the best yards-per-carry average. Other outstanding players who saw plenty of action were Fullback Terry Ryan, Center Darryl Slater, Ends Mike Prime and Don Wilson, Guard Kelley Bury, and Tackle Frank Sauzer. The “B” and “C” Football teams didn ' t do quite as well as they had done last year, and the “C” Football squad turned in Western’s only winning record in the fall, as they went through the season winning four games and losing three for Coach Krasnansky. Capt. Voss’s aggregation ran into some stiff competition and a slew of injuries and finished the season 2-6. The “C” team was an almost entirely new squad that had never before played 106 together, and the “B” team was almost under the same conditions that held the “C” team back from winning the league championship. Captain Hilgert ' s Cross Country team got off to a slow start, but finished the season with a pair of nice wins. They did well in the ABC league meet, and lowered the school record for the course several times. The prospects for next season are considerably brighter than they were this year, as there will be a return of a large number of the team’s best runners. WINTER: The success of the Wrestling and Swimming teams formed a perfect balance with the slipping of the Soccer and Basketball squads. The Wrestling team turned in another fine performance, and can be termed as the “great team that became greater”, because they won the Championship of the ABC League for the second successive year, as well as the medal meet held at Principia. The Wrestlers were 4-1-1 in the league, and 7-5-1 overall. They produced some very fine individual records, and three boys placed in the District Meet for WMA. Bill -Vemor was 16-2 against all competition. Bill Billingsley and Frank Sauzer were 12-3 apiece, and Dick Blankenship the team Captain was unbeaten with an 8-0-2 reading. The Swimming team came out on top of the most difficult schedule of any of the Western teams with an 8-5 record. Mike Buckley, the team captain for two years, was instrumental in his team’s success, as his holding or sharing in six of Western’s ten swimming records indicates. He finished fourth in the Breaststroke in the District, and scored more points in two years than any other individual has scored in the history of Western swimming teams. Other swimmers who were overshadowed by Mike were Mike Prime, Darryl Slater, Stan Schwab, Dave Kennedy, Jim Reiners and Bud Erickson. Dwight Ripley again became WMA’s only representative at the State Swimming meet by taking a third place at the District Meet in Bloomington in the diving. The Varsity Basketball team had its first losing season in four years at Western, which proves that “all things are equal.” Lack of experienced vets hurt Western’s chances of coming out on top again, but the prospects for next year are especially bright as there are five returning lettermen, and three starters. Jim Ramsey, an All ABC League selection and a Sophomore, was Western’s high scorer, along with another Sophomore, Phil Kunz. George Fields and Dick Me Candless with Lee Me Grady represent this years starting five, but Mickey Doucleff and Don Wilson will start all of next year to form a well balanced Western five. The Varsity soccer team went through the season without recording any victories, but they were hard to stop as they failed to score in only two contests. The same thing is true of the soccer team that is true of the majority of Western teams, and that is there will be plenty of material on hand for next season. The “B” and “C” and “C” Reserve Basketball teams did well this year as they recorded an equal number of wins as losses. Coaches Hazard, Krasnansky and Wolfe are to be commended as they did a very fine job with Western’s younger athletes. Looking ahead to the spring Western is the defending champion in track and has some fine representatives off of last year’s squad which is written up on another page. The Golf, Baseball and Tennis teams have fairly good outlooks for them also. At this writing I cannot predict the outcome of the spring sports teams, because the question is too difficult to answer. However the all around outlook is better than it was last year so the rest is up to the individuals. This leaves only one thing left for me to say, and that is “Good Luck” to the corps of 1962-63, because you have a firm foundation upon which to build good teams next year, all you need to do is redeem your spirit, so let the spirit of my class and your athletic potential combine to restore Western’s name to the top of athletic circles. “Let’s go, big Red!” Team Records - 1961 - 1962 Varsity Football “B” Football “C” Football Varsity Cross Country Opp. WMA Opp. WMA Opp. WMA Opp. WMA [ • Andries 32 7 Lutheran C. 0 18 Lutheran C 7 0 Lutheran C. 23 33 M.
