HL QM THE I958-59 RECALL The Senior Class proudly presents the review of the important events and personalities ofthe academic year 1958-59. The Recall is the Who's Who of the Academy. Its purpose is two-fold: first, to recapture, for the years ahead, the spirit of campus life as expressed in daily activities of cadet life, second, to continue the tradition of a chapter each year to the history of Western Military Academy. This photographic record began in 1923 and has continued with a single exception to this volume. This edition was prepared and edited by the following members of the Senior Class cooperating with the Headmaster, Lieutenant Colonel C. L. Persing. The Sponsor WHY RECALL 1959! Western Military Academy is a place, a spirit, a personality. Against the backdrop of daily activities, many campus residents reflect colorful facets of personality in action and repose. lt is the purpose of the Recall to endeavor to recapture some of these overtones for this sentimental photographic biography of the academic year, 1958-1959. The editors of 1958-1959 Recall in returning to a letterpress type of repro- duction decided to emphasize the personalities of the Corps, some in a general way and some in special prominence. The central and primary theme is Who's Who. The secondary purpose of the Recall is to spotlight those persons in the Western scene who by some conspicuous achievement distinguished themselves. Their achievements made Western history. The editors would be remiss if they did not acknowledge the brutal fact that without the generous and loyal support of the persons, patrons and corporations who paid for the advertisements, there would have been no 1958-1959 edition. ln this regard, special recognition must be given to Mrs. W. E. Erickson, mother of Cadet Erickson who personally interested so many business organizations in the project. Really this volume should be dedicated to her. Likewise the editors wish to thank Mr. Ralph W. Smith for his professional assistance. Of course, the Head- master, the Recall sponsor, pressured the whole project to its happy conclusion. Finally, the editors in the 1958-1959 edition of the Recall beg forgiveness for any error of inclusion or oversight. Such action was purely accidental. Surely there is unlimited praise for all in this cadet attempt to provide the instrument that carves out of the present, the images that shall give the future generations a vivid, living appreciation of life at Western Military Academy in 1958-1959. Editors 'Hz-Q I958 - RECALL - I959 'K A THE SENIOR CIRCLE AND TERRACE THE LIPERI TENDE T COLONEL RALPH B. JACKSON Colonel Jackson, Western Military Academy l935, is to the manor-born, a Western man. His entire life has been lived on the Western campus. Apart from his years away for college education and military service, he has grown up with the Western tradition. As Super- intendent of the Academy since 1946, he follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Colonel A. M. Jack- son, one of the Academy founders, and his own father, Colonel Ralph L. Jackson, Western Military Academy l904-l952. Colonel Jackson earned his MA Degree at Wash- ington University, his AB Degree at the University of Chicago. He also attended Princeton University and the University of Colorado. He served as a Lieutenant in the Naval Air Corps. Colonel Jackson knows cadet life as intimately as any cadet. His friendly manner and his sincere concern for the happiness and security of every cadet is appre- ciated by all cadets, patrons, and alumni. Persing, Headmaster, has been in charge of the all-important academic department of Western for twenty-three years. He is a pillar of strength on the fac- ulty and in the school. No one can doubt Colonel Persing's sincerity in insist- ing upon high scholastic standards. He will battle for academics, and he is uncompromising in maintaining thorough classroom work. Colonel Persing came to Western Military Academy in 1937 from New Trier High School. He has a fine educa- tional background, as he holds degrees from three great universities: Colgate, Yale, and Northwestern. He has edited and authored a series of successful English text- books. At Western he has established a core curriculum of fundamental subjects which has won the approval of state inspectors. He has instituted such activities as the National Honor Society, MTO, the Junior-Senior speech program, LT' COLONEI' C' L- PERSING and many other valuable innovations. He stands firm in Heudmcsie' his support of his academic faculty. Under him, Western has upheld its high rating as a school. 'Y' '19 THE COlVllVlA DA T COLONEL CHARLES H. MOORE KUSARJ Colonel Moore, Western Military Academy '21, is a colorful personality in the modern Western tradition. His twoscore and two years of active service with the regular army and the ROTC unit at Western have associated him with every important phase of recent Western history. His professional life has been Western: Cadet, Tactical Officer, Commandant, PMST. He has qualified himself for unusual service to his Alma Mater. Colonel Moore has lived a colorful life with many facets, a regular army commission as Colonel, a nation- ally-known small arms expert and an expert marksman, a lecturer, a director of tours, and expert in military organization. He, despite his greying temples, is still as youthful as the cadets he serves. His daily association with boys has endeared him to generations of Western Cadets. 'wmv I I 1 I 1 MJQBQ THE PMS CAPTAIN J. R. JACKSON lUSAl Captain Jackson is the liaison ollficer of United States Army at Western Military Academy. He is commanding officer of the ROTC unit on this campus and supervises the Academy's Military Program. His military career began as an enlisted man in 'l94'l. In the eighteen years of military career, he has served in World War ll, Korea, and in the post-war European Theatre. He has specialized in the field artillery and the antiaircratt branches of the armed forces. During his years of service, he has been honored with twelve deco- rations, including the Navy Unit Commendation and the Bronze Star. Captain J. R. Jackson is a worthy successor to the long line of Western PMST's who have developed and main- tained Western Honor School rating for twenty-eight successive years. THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR- Schedule Maker CAPTAIN .IIM GOODWIN Captain Jim Goodwin, Western Military Academy, '46, is Western's Athletic Director and Public Relations Officer for athletics. Jim comes by his interest in Western athletics naturally. His father as a Cadet was one of the Academy's athletic hall of famers , his brother, Lane, was like his father, an outstanding all 'round Varsity athlete who later became Varsity coach for two years. Captain Goodwin as a Cadet was also a fine athlete. Any wonder when he returned from the Air Force he came back to Western as a teacher- coach-director. Captain Goodwin is a boy's type of man, quiet in speech and fair lout insistent in action. He is a natural for Western's A-B-C setup, because he grew up with it and in it. He helped to codify its rules and regulations. With the big improvement in the sports program in 1958-59, you need to look no farther than Western's own AD for one of the big reasons. THE YEAR 1958-1959 ATHLETIC REVIEW FALL A D WI TER SPDRTS The 1958 record of three wins, four losses, and one tie was the best since the undefeated season of 1947. Sonny Lockitski's four touchdowns and one extra point led the scoring. Coach Frank Crumpacker's initial season at Western began successfully with an 18-6 triumph over Berkeley. The three Raider touchdowns were scared by Lockitski, Naeve, and Thomas. The Raiders remained unbeaten, but had to settle for a 14-14 tie with a powerful Mercy eleven. Don Saceman had a TD and an extra point, Lockitski had the other score with Tom Dickson adding the other point. The ABC opener was a dismal 39-0 loss to Country Day. However, John Burroughs was held to only one tochdown in the next game while slipping by, 7-0. University City walked to a 34-0 rout despite the stellar performance of Purdom Thomas. The Western backfield was riddled by injuries in that game. The Raiders downed Benld, 14-0, in the first night contest. Chet Brown and Lockitski scored the touchdowns, but sophomore fullback Jerry Edele churned up the most yardage. Once again ABC League competition served as a iinx as Principia slipped by, 21-19. Naeve scored twice, and Charles Kennard once, but it wasn't enough. Francisco Rivera was nearly unstoppable, but never managed to cross the goal. The final game of the year, played on a field of mud in a driving storm, was a 28-7 victory over Cahokia. At Cahokia, Rivera scored twice with Lockitski and Kennard adding one each. Rivera was awarded the Pigskin Taps Award for his outstanding play in that particular game. The record spoke for itself. It was quite an improvement over the perform- ances of past years. The well-rounded strength and the overall depth of the team would certainly point to better times ahead. Coach Crumpacker has guided the Raiders to the best season in over ten years. The A-B-C League campaign was opened with a one-sided, 70-46 victory over Principia. McGrady and Doucleff both scored over twenty points. The second win was not quite as easy as Western Military Academy overcame a Burroughs early lead to win, 49-33. Doucleff was the star this time as McGrady could score only seven points. A 61-52 win over Country Day, paced once again by McGrady, preceded a startling 47-46 defeat at the hands of Principia. The Raiders, however, retaliated with the finest effort of the year in downing Lutheran, 56-48. Lutheran quickly came back to down Western Military Academy a week later, 65-59, to throw the league's title race into a wild scramble. Burroughs fell once more, 61-51, as Doucleff hit his high mark of 25. Then the Western boys came back from a 12-point deficit to hammer Country Day, 46-39. That win clinched a tie for the championship. The Raiders wound up as co-champions with Lutheran beating Country Day also. The league scoring crown was also captured for the second straight year by Larry McGrady, while Karl Doucleff copped fourth place. Marquette eliminated the Raiders from the district tourney with a 63-60 win in the opening round. All told, Western turned in one of the best records in years as Coach Crumpacker made quite a success in his first year. Sparking the Western attack for the second straight year was high-scoring Larry McGrady, who set a new school record of forty-seven points in the second game with Brussels. Larry's 25.3 average for sixteen games was also the highest ever turned in by a Western player. WILLIAM FAYMA GREEN Fayma Green is more than a title on Western's roster, she is a sparkling personality which touches the daily experience of every Western Cadet. As dietitian she serves the food that satisfies, as social hostess, she directs the program that creates happiness. Her specialties: good food, birthday cakes, formal dinners, blind dates, danc- ing classes, formal hops-all are the extras cadets never forget. Mrs. Green came to Western with her husband, Maior W. H. Green, in 1943. Her sons, William and John, attended and graduated from Western. Early in her West- ern career, she proved her versatility, she filled in as teacher, assisted with the Lower School, eventually be- came dietitian and social director. ln every capacity, her rich personality, her maternal interest, her professional training has given life at Western an extra touch that has made life richer and more pleasant. P, MARTIN Dramatics at Western are centered in two organiza- tions: the Cadespians for beginners and the National Thespians for specially qualified craftsmen. Major Martin graduated from Lake Forest College, later he received his Ph. D. Degree from Northwestern University at Evans- ton. He has been at Western since 1946 as head of the Lower School and Dramatics Director. Major Richard P. Martin is the high Alpha ofthe Na- tional Thespian Chapter at Western. As Dramatics Direc- tor he has always provided the Corps with good theatre. His unusual ability in shaping young talent into high quality performers has earned him an enviable reputa- tion among high school dramatics authorities. Frequently he has been called upon to make the test performance for newly published plays. For almost a quarter century he has been the inspiration and guiding hand for the Shrapnel and the Recall. His publications have always had a quality of superior excellence. However, his greatest contribution has been his ability to inspire young amateurish scribblers to develop genuine re- spect for the highest ideals of sound iournalism. A gentleman, a scholar, a counselor, he has the deep and reverent respect of all who have worked with him. Major Hinton is unquestionably a boarding school personality of the highest quality. His whole career, beginning with his graduation from Birmingham- Southern in 1916 and continuing on the graduate level at the University of Missouri and Washington Univer- sity, he has been working with young men. THE LAST TAPS REPORT FOR THE CLASS 1959 Sir, the final inspection for T958-59 has been completed, all underclassmen are present and awaiting their new assigned responsibilities. The class of '59 responded to its last campus taps in good order. Sir, the class begs to report an unusual phenomena at its taps inspection. As usual the trumpeter completed his assignment, but the echo of his call con- tinued to re-echo in the ears and minds of the Seniors. lt was uncanny the effect this hallucination had on those boys. Some were speechless, others merely shook their heads as they whispered, lt's not taps, it's just the Recall of the silent company of Western men who heard the call to arms, but never heard the taps. Sir, if I may presume to indulge in a bit of fancy, I would say that the class of T959 merely heard the counted cadence of that column of Western men, the alumni, which courageously pushes into the future. The class of T959 will have a new sense of Western life and traditions when they ioin the column.
