Standing: Edward Koch, Douglas Keith, Jimmy Don Maddox, and Robert Schwartz. Western's chapter of the National HonorsSociety, as the name implies, is a national organization. It is the highest honor group on the campus. Only a few Seniors can qualify for membership. They are selected by the Headmaster, aided by the faculty. CHARACTER SCHOLARSHIP 5' LEADERSHIP SERVICE Though scholarship is of great importance, a candidate must also meet the highest standards of character, leadership, and service to his school and fellow cadets. He must be a constructive influence for good on the campus. He pledges himself to the service and perpetuation of the National Honor Society's aims and ideals, both on this campus and elsewhere. 12 CRC-IAN ZATIGNS MEMBERS OF THE TABLE ORGANIZATI First Row, Left to Right: Gant, Palen, Kirkpatrick, Cameron, Capt. Malone, Sponsor, Maddox, Koch, Schwartz, R., and Smith, M. Second Row: Keith, Mulcahy, Adelman, Petersen Gemberling, Kushkin, Tanurchis, Hayes, Dahm, Weinsting, and Corn. Third Row: Froebe, F., Harrison, J., Davidson, W., Babcock, Prather, Bimgham, Seemann, Rudman, Miller, J. Caruthers, Raffety, and McConachie. Top Row: Hall, Ferguson, Earp, Crandall, Guardia Denkmann, Stevens, Mueller, McKelvey, Hombel, Howell, Ferrell. 1 1 1 The MTO is one of Western's honor organizations. Unlike the National Honor Society, it is open to outstanding cadets from each class. The members are a group of hand-picked cadets who have proved their worth on the campus. They are chosen because of their leadership, academics, deportment, and, above all, their service to the school. This is the newest organization on the campus, as it was founded only two years ago. Captain Malone helped draw up the charter and at present sponsors the MTO. It is an influence for good at Western, and from this group will come future members of the National Honor Society. 13 ON G gyw WJ ,V,,,.f.- in :kr 1 Xa. v My S , If ikriijgiwiw ,Mag 13, X. fi.. f, - I Vmj5,,,.,...,...v, f wb . .iww-WMM.. f . fir .. . .. .. . .,.......-. . ,,,w, - L s Q 5, M K.. .. ,gg . Second Row: Conkling, Gant, McGrady, Clarke, R., Bash, Carr, Munn, Horowski. Hearst was absent. Captain Lane Goodwin really had a much better varsity team than the record shows. The Raiders, unable to use the unfinished field house at the start of the season, had to practice upon a small court and play the first nine games away from home. lt was then that they lost most of their games. The second half of the season found them clicking ,and they wound up by tying for second place in the A.B.C. League. Magee and Rudman of Western were the 2nd and 3rd top scorers in the conference. Wilson and Tanurchis became great offensive players, with Junge and Hearst coming strong. Many people thought that Western had the best team in the league at the end of the season. 'k -k -k -k -k 'k Thursday was news night at Western, for that was when the weekly school paper, The Shrapnel, was distributed in the mess hall. The Shrapnel was an important part ot school life. The cadet journalists covered all of the news on the campus as well as the gossip and coming events. The paper was sent to most of the parents, and at times extra alumni editions were mailed to all grads. Maj. Hinton and Capt. Sutton as sponsors did a wonderful job. The Circulation Staff had the responsible task of distributing papers and folding them for the mailing list. It was a very efficient group. The Recall had to be planned, photographs made, material written and assembled, layouts formed, and deadlines to be met. As the result, the job finally fell upon a few loyal and faithful members who were willing to carry on to the finish. The members of the Staff owe much to Maj. Hinton for his help as faculty sponsor. Without his work and guidance, the yearbook could hardly have been produced. The Staff members wish to express their thanks to him. Left: Maj. 'k'k'k'k'k'k The Recall always has had the tradition ot paying its bills. The successful financing this year was due to those cadets who secured adver- tising and subscriptions. Any cadet who obtained 350.00 or more in ad- vertising was on the business staff. Many underclassmen did fine work But above all, appreciation must be expressed to business firms, patrons, and friends for their generous support. Right: Col.
