' ' . . r yu r . 4 4 Q n 7 , . . . y 0 Q I 7 n n . , . , ' , . . . , . o THE O lcers OF THE S, Future Commandanfs Staff Lcrto right Lleut R B xckson LILLII Brooks Sgt Sprung, Col Callaway Mr Haney May Galbraith and Lol Moore Com mandant On October 29 General Orders No 2 ap pointed 14 lreutenants and 5 first sergeants in the corps Others followed rapidly until the battalion had a full quota of officers and non coms Then Cadet Donald M Rebar was named cadet major and commander of the battalion and Cadet Capt Laney took com mand of A Company A crack drill squad known as the Honor Guard was organized by Master Sergeant Spring with Cadet Capt Schaefer in com mand This unit made a good showing at the Alton game and at the visit of Brig General E B Sebree lt was slated for more exhibitions ln the spring and at commencement Warrant Officer Orville Harvey on the Military Staff for two years w as transferred to the University of Illinois His duties were taken over by Master Sgt Spring Some changes were rnade in the grading system and rn the military subiects with more stress on leadership weapons marksmanship small urut tactics, and map reading Twenty one cadets were cited for being in the top 10 per cent of their respective military classes for the preceding year And thus the first semester ended with steady progress Colonel Callway stated I was greatly surprised and pleased with thc excellent appearance and m1l1tary attitude of the corps of cadets I had not eicpected to bc come a part of such a splendid organization He also stated that the prime objective of the Military Department was to develop rn all to m1l1tary leadership Cadet Corp lack Algcr was thc first to be awarded the personal appearance ribbon for being first at fixe Saturday morning inspections rn neatness in his company Thirty two other cadets recerved the military efficiency award for outstanding work during thc first semestcr The winter months brought cold weather and consequently indoor parades and drills More tlmc w 'is spcnt on mass commands and training the juniors to step IDIO the vacancies which would be left by the Class of 31 On warmer days short road marches and drills were held on the streets around the Academy By the time the brisk March winds werc blowrng the corps began outdoor work again and outdoor parades On the drill field and in W s ff Q -I . Reviews were held in military classes, and emphasis was put upon combat formations and squadgtactics. The big push was on, and Colonel Callaway and his staff checked every phase of military training to make sure that it was perfect, and Colonel Moore and his staff began the drive to get the barracks into top condition. Battalion Staff Front Schaefer,capt.-adj., Rebar,cadet major, Bilgere, lieut., operations oHicer. Ht1ck-- Hasselman, sgt.-major, Merlcle,orderly and messenger. New cadets raise hands and take pledge to of R.O.T.C. The Recall will go to press before G. l. can be recorded. But it is safe to say that the examination by the visiting inspection officers was rigid, fair, and exact. The cadet corps, in the usual tradition, was expected to put forth a supreme, loyal, cooperative effort for the reputation of Western, and it is hoped that by this time news will have been received that the corps of '50-'51 has again won the 'Ll-lonor Rating for the school. That is the highest military rating possible to attain, and Western has held it for many, many years. After G. l. the corps had the task of prepar- ing for the commencement exhibitions, includ- ing everything from fancy drills and parades to demonstrations of weapons and physical training. Credit for the excellent showing made by this year's corps should go to the cadets themselves and, above all, to the fine military staff, Lieut. Col. Callaway, lviajor Galbraith, Mr. Harvey, Master Sgt. Spring, and Sgt., lst Glass, Ander- son, all ofthe U. S. Army. Also due apprecia- tion must be expressed to Col. Moore and his commandant's staff. And then that final day We the day on which the entire battalion appears under arms as a military unit for the last time, the day of the farewell dress parade and review at com- mencement. The end of the military year! become members Gen. Sebree Cleft, and Col. Callaway frightb The General talks enter campus and march hy Honor Guard with Col. jackson eneral Sebree Pays Visit When Brig. General E. B. Sebree visited Western in November, he was to stay only a short time, but his visit was another example of his interest in the Academy. General Sebree, a West Point graduate, was here on leave from duties in Germany. As a young officer he was detailed to Western as the head of the Military Department, '28-'32, and was one of the best PMS and T's that the school ever had. During World War ll, he commanded units on Guadalcanal and in the South Pacific. He made a brilliant record and received many citations. Later he was Military Attache at Melbourne, Australia, and more recently has been in command of the post at Munich. General Sebree was received by the cadet corps with full military honors. He was greeted at the Memorial Gate by the newly formed Honor Guard and by the entire corps and faculty. Though his stay was brief, General Sebree's visit was an inspiration to the corps. He stated that he hoped that he could return at com- mencement. He has made several visits to Western since becoming a famous brigadier general. V. and B team veterans returning, the gridiron prospects at first looked hright for Western's Red Raiders. However, before the season had gone very far, ineligihilities and injuries had crippled the squad greatly. Head Coach, Major F. V. Gould, was assisted hy Lieut. Bill Green and Sgt. Spring. The Raiders looked good in the opening game on Eaton Field against Clayton. After trailing far hehind, they staged a terrific rally, but time ran out and Clayton finally won a thriller, 26-21. That was the way it was to he all the year --- plenty of offense hut a weak defense. Harkness, Kieck, and Ellis scored for Vllestern. The next weekend the Raiders went down hefore a strong and experienced Warrirwr eleven under the lights at Granite City, 34-6. Western opened the A. B. C. League play against a tricky Country Day team in St. Louis. In a steady downpour on a muddy field, the cadets received their only shutout of the season, 19-O. With only four veterans from the last year's squad, the outlook was rather dim, hut Coach Brooks, with his usual fire and spirit, put his boys through a strenuous conditioning program and came up with a tough squad. jim Loekett, jenn Milbauer, and Tracy Arnold were the experienced mainstays of the team. The matmen this year had a record of four wins, seven losses, and one tie. They were much better than the record shows, for they met the strongest mat teams in the area of two states. They gave every opponent a stiff battle and won the respect of every foe. Two cadets qualified for the state meet, Bob Ellis and Don Lerner Ellis, in the l55-pound class, had the hest record of the year, winning IO out of 12 bouts. He was co-captain of the team, and he was closely followed hy co-cap- tain, jim Lockett, whose winning spirit was not surpassed hy anyone on the team. Tracy Ar- nold also had a great season. Other key men werejuan Garza and Chipper Kennedy, who should he outstanding next year. Seniors Tom jansky and Fletch Lloyd were always in there doing their share. Hazel, Bradford, and Milhauer, along with Arnold and others, will be on hand for next year's squad. M issingfVedder, Garza, M. It is interesting to note that, as the season progressed, the competition became stronger, and every cadet had to put forth his hest efforts. The enthusiasm and the will to win were at their very highest on the W.M.A. team until the last gong sounded. In the last few years wrestling has grown in popularity at Western, and it now may be classified as a major sport. The matmen and Coach Brooks are to be congratulated upon their fine job. Westerns two dramatic organizations, the Thespians and the Cadespians, were very active. Under the skilled direction of Capt. Martin, they presented several plays, including The Valiant , Colichum Autumnale , the Christmas play, Dust on the Earth Road , The Monkeys Paw , and There's Une in Every Company . Capt. Martin also directs the Senior Play, a feature of commencement. In addition, the Vl'estern entertainment pro- gram included many outstanding attractions lay traveling companies, ranging from drama, lectures, and music to magicians and athletes. NX'estern had numerous hobby clubs which were active last year. Unfortunately, several of them were never photographed. They all con- tributed much to cadet life. Hasselman and l-lolsen did a good job in directing the Shrapnel circulation staff, which saw to the distribution and mailing of papers each week. The Art Club, led by Ernie Neckermann, gave many boys an outlet for their talent. ln addition, it furnished school posters and the Senior profiles for commencement, of course, with the aid of Mrs. Gould. The Camera Club in the basement of D had faithful addicts under the direction of Mr. Powers. Frank Murphy, Hayes, and Benjamin of that organization took many of the Recall pictures. One popular organization was the Hobby Cluh with Maj. Galbraith in charge. Wlith power machinery and tools cadets made many interesting articles, ranging from book shelves to pieces of furniture. There was a marksmanship club for cadets who had as a hobby target practice and skeet shooting. There was a skeet range on the campus. Tom Waterhotise won the annual Thanksgiving goose shoot . Nxleight-lifting, 100 Mile Club, Hike Club, Stamp Club, and plain old bull session clubs, which were likely to meet anywhere, were all informal groups which enjoyed getting to- gether.
