The Q 4 Q OF Recall WESTERN MILITARY ACADEMY, ALTON, ILLINOIS WILLIAM E. FOSTER and JAY S. HKYMAN Co-Editors HENRY N. SCHWEPPE, JR. .Business .Manager CARL I). BOBBISH Circulation .Manager MAJOR C. L. PERSINC Faculty Adviser e ration The use of coile names for military projects is a development of World War II. Originally these codes were used to insure security measures against enemy intelligence agencies. Later, for convenience of reference, the term was applied to important civil projects. In such cases, the impli- cation of the term, rather than its accepted meaning, added color to our language. Operation Recall, for this reason, implies that the 1949 Senior Class annual is a project which carries with it both the factual and sentimental account of this Senior chapter of Western Military history. For us this is a year of decision. Four years ago when we entered Western as Freshmen, the world was emerging from a prolonged period of inter- national struggle. We little understood the challenge that was to test our spirit as the world pulled itself out of the shadow ' s. Four happy years and now a decision: how shall we proceed in college or business to prove our training in new ' endeavor? What shall our place be in the new scheme of things? As we ponder our question, we raise a hand to stay the future for a period until we can shape Operation Recall into an anchor for these happy scenes of our years at Western. In these pages is the story of our greatest year at Western. Who can tell the complete account, the changes that have come over us since we began our Freshman year! Poets we have none who can retell the Saga of 49. Yet exploits and verses we have many. Our own developed per- sonalities of our last year at Western must tell our story. Good-bye, classmates; take a salute from the Class of ’49 and carry on in the finest of Western spirit. Editors 3)n jfflemoriam To one who answered reveille, but never heard the taps; To one who lived with us three years, but never saw the last ; To him we pay the honor that in some small way might be, A lasting token of respect to him we cannot see. Varsity Football around which to build a top team, and con- sequently it did not equal the record of the undefeated Red Raider team of the previous year. But the thirty-five loyal players who stayed out all season will always be remember- ed as members of a rugged, never-say-die aggregation. Maj. Favre Gould worked hard with his boys but did not have enough time before the first game was upon them. Granite City took that game on the virtue of one long run that brought a touchdow r n. This game ended the Western victory string at twelve straight games. But the Raiders traveled to St. Louis the next w r eekend and took a 9-6 victory over CBC. Chuck Mallen scored the Western touchdown and Jerry Hunter brought about a safety for the cadets. The Raiders met their first ABC League foe in St. Louis as Country Day edged out the BIue-and-Red by a 7-0 score. Western had tw ' o touchdowns called back in this game. A hard-driving John Burroughs team splashed to a 12-0 victory on rain-soaked Eaton Field as Western lost another conference game. The University City Indians extracted revenge for last year’s defeat by handing the Raiders their worst defeat of the year, 26-0. Western had better luck at the end of the season, as they were improving all the while. Climaxing a tough season with a w-ell- earned 21-19 victory over Western’s rival, Alton High, the 1948 Red Raiders left their mark as a spirited, driving team on the grid- iron. The 1948 team had only four lettermen VARSITY COACHES Capt. Jackson, Maj. Gould (Head Coach), Col. Martz Ferguson went down before the Western on- rush, 20-12, as Chuck Walker scored twice and Dick Webb tallied once. Principia held W estern to a 0-0 tie in St. Louis in the final ABC League game, as the Raiders tied with the Panthers for third place in the conference. Western could not hold onto a small lead in the next-to-last game with Gillespie as the Miners won the hard-fought game, 19-14. The annual Turkey Day clash with Alton I ligh seemed to make the season successful, for the cadets took a close victory from the Redbirds on that dav, 21-19. The lead in the game changed five times, and the Red Raiders played their best game of the year. Dick Webb was credited with one TD and Buzz Taylor made one of his pair of touch- downs on a 105 yard run through the whole Redbird team. ★ CO-CAPTAINS Walker, C. and Taylor, M. Buzz Taylor received the award for The Best Player in the Alton Game” because of his outstanding play that afternoon. Buzz scored two of Western’s three touchdowns. Jim Norman was honored with The Dad’s Award” for conscientious loyalty to the team throughout the season. Jim did not see much action, but he remained out for the entire season, plugging away in practice and in games. 1 he 1948 Red Raider football team may not lie remembered for the record they com- piled, but they will surely leave their mark as one ol the most rugged, hard-working, loyal teams ever to play for Western. ★ AWARD WINNERS Norman and Taylor, M. 53 — vo o to JV Football ★ Front Row: Capt. A Basketball Western’s Red Raider cagers had a success- ful season this year, compiling a good record and making school history. The cadets were victorious on 1 1 occasions and were defeated 8 times. The “A” cagers set school history by being the first cage team in the history of Western to win a game in the Illinois Re- gional Tournament. The Raiders won two games to reach the finals before being downed. The Raiders were at their best on their home court, winning six and losing only two there. The ABC League competition was tough this year, and the cadets wound up in third place. John Burroughs, League champs and St. Louis regional winners, eked out two one-basket wins over Western in hard-fought games. The Raiders showed much power at the beginning and end of their season. The pro- teges of Maj. Gould won their first three games, and had a string of four straight wins in the last tew games. Dick Webb was one of the smallest boys on the Western team, but he was also the high scorer. He averaged 13 points per game to lead other Western sharpshooters as Dick Carlson, A1 Samuel, Tom Nichols, Chuck Walker, Buzz Taylor, Phil Taylor, Ted Bier- man, and Tom Kmswiler. — 56 Red Raider Season s Record 1948-49 Western 38 Jennings 33 Western . . 41 ( iillespie .29 Western 50 Ferguson .28 Western . . 36 — U. The Jayvees were edged out by only two baskets or less in three close con- tests, and they won two other close ones. One good feature about the “JV” team was the fact that every man on the team was an underclassman. Coach Reed did much to work with these players and help develop them into potential Varsity players. Some of the Jayvee team members who showed much promise were I aue, Pech, Clark, Pearson, Woodruff, Calhan, Jansky, Adelman, Rebar, and Walling. Front Row: Walling, Clark, Pech. Pearson. Grant. Bell had no lettermen back for the “B” team at the beginning of the season, but he molded the boys who did come out into a winning team. The Bee squad had a successful season in both non-league and league contests. The team sported a record of eight victories as against only five losses. Several of the ABC league games were close, one-basket affairs, and the cadets took second in the loop. Bobby Meyer, Harry Dickinson, Ralph llagemann, Dick Rebstock, Andy Walker, Dave Schaefer, Bob Baker, and Johnny Green were the smallest B” team in the league. “ Ii Basketball Record WMA . .51 Medora 52 WMA 41 Roxana WMA . .48- 1 )eMolav 27 WMA . .35- U. The boys had a record of eight wins and eight losses, and plac- ed second in the final conference standings. As usual, the cadets were overshadowed by the larger ABC League teams, but they never lost their fighting spirit. Good things must come in small packages, for the “Mighty Midgets” won ten games while losing only half that many. Many times the “I)” players were pitted against larger, more-experienced boys, but they fought hard and usually won. Martz introduced many new and helpful ideas to military life at Western before the year was over, among them: the presentation of streamers to the best company at parades, the instruction of classes by Senior military cadets, variations in parade routine, the citing of the neatest cadets at inspections, the rota- tion of officers, the introduction of executive officers, and many other things. Orders were issued early in the year, and the newly-appointed cadet officers and non- coms began to mold their units into a snappy battalion. Drill periods in the Fall were spent in teaching the new cadets the fundamentals o( drill. Bad weather in the winter forced drills and parades inside, but the military bearing did not lag. As soon as the inclement weather passed, the corps began to bear down again. By the time Government Inspection came, the corps was a crack unit, in drill, appearance, discipline, and courtesy. The inspectors were rough, but G.I.” was con- sidered a success by Col. Martz. The corps dropped military theory classes after Government Inspection and concentrat- ed on preparing for the Commencement ex- ercises. After much practice, the cadet corps performed in fine style before the many visi- tors. The final Sunday parade was truly a fine finish to a fine military year. — 66 ★ PMS T’S STAFF Lt. Col. W. V.
