One more year has gone hy to add to the prestige of lYestern as one of the foremost pre- paratory schools of the lfnited States. Through the loyal guidance and unswerving standards of our Headmaster. Blajor C. L. Persing. YYestern has received high recognition for scholastic ex- cellence from the colleges and universities of the nation. Blajor Persingls goal has always been thorough academic preparation and true char- acter development. With the aid of a well- trained. carefully selected. and highly educated stall' of instructors. he has placed Western among the leading secondary schools of the country. 'llhe academic department this year was the major force on the XY. RI. .-X. campus. Cadets were influenced more hy their scholastic work than hy any other phase ol' student life. Studies were held up as the most important ohjective of XXX-stern training. Cadets worked hard to achieve high records in the academic field. Seniors. especially. realized that excellent class- room records meant the difference hetween go- -14- ing to a good or a poor college. or heing accepted or rejected hy a university. However. they had confidence in themselves and their instructors, who were striving to prepare them for the chal- lenge of higher education. Blany a htrigf, or college board student learned to hurn the mid- night oilf' poring over some of Captain Doc Aller's toughies,' or concocting a theme for Captain Hood. They saw the vistas of foreign languages. literature. history. mathematics. and other fields of knowledge open wide before them. They knew that competition on a national scale on the Wt-sr Point exams. Naval R. O. T. C. tests. and College Board exams would he tough. They learned to face these facts and huckle down with the industriousness and seriousness ol a senior. Seniors accepted the responsihility of supply- ing leadership in the Corps on the athletic held. on the drill ground. and in the classroom. As seniors they had to set the example for under- classmen to lollow. lhis leaderslnp was fur- nished through two highly respected organiza- . . . am! 400 CM tionx. thr' National Honor Society and thr- NDVI Cfluh. lX'r'xtr'rn Military Arxiclr-1i1y'x Sr-nior Chaptrtr 2672 of thr' National Honor Socivty wax r'xtah- lixhr'd on lJr'r'r'1i1hrfr ll. l9'l2. Une of the most enthusiastically played sports at YY:-stern is base-hall: and those cadets who have not had enough practical experience with the game or who are not hig enough to make the varsity team compose the conglomerate hut spirited J, V. team. 'lhis team has fully as tough a schedule as the team. The 1947 J. V. hasehall team won four games and lost three, ending up on the top side of their schedule. 'lihey played sueh teams as Brighton, Bur- roughs, and Codasco, and all of their games were hotlv contested. Boh Reyes shuttled hack and forth hetween the varsity and the V. as a pitcher, hut spent most of his time with the Bentley-men as their pitcher and sometimes their first haseman. Leak Lf-Clair was good at outfield posts along with Uyaas and Dugie Eniswiler. Arnold served in many capacities--oub Helder, third baseman, and shortstop. Lippy'i Deutsch was hehind the plate as Catcher until he was called up to the varsity, and then it was Louie Johnson. Chuck Mallen was the star pitcher on the scorecard and other names who were also frequently on the card were Joe jones, Arkansas Williams, and jim Baker. Larry VVollsen was the versatile second haseman, Klany of these erstwhile .Iayvees can he found on this years team. Lieut. B:-ntley's Fine coaching last year helped not only to finish the 1947 season successfully, hut to develop many promising new stars for the 1948 season. peforll YV. M. A. 8 Codasco 29 XV. M. The 1947 track season started with a disappoint- ing opening meet, when the thinclads dropped their first engagement to Principia. In later contests, how- ever, the track men came back to finish their season with a record characteristic of most Western champion- ship track teams. An impressive list of track champions was on hand for the beginning of the track season: and they devel- oped rapidly during the opening weeks. Some of the outstanding men during the year were: joe Dugan, who starred in the 100-yard dash and the 220-yard run: Rod Gaebe in the 440: Dick W'alling, in the grueling 440 and 880-yard events: joe Champ in the 880: and Nowlin in the mile run. Billy Fuchs and Big Jimi' Corbett were the varsity men in the shot- put: Tiny Fyermann and Jack Stiebel heaved the discus. VVally Smith was the top pole-vaulter: Carl Kaltwasser showed up well in the high-jump: and both Buzz Taylor and Dick Walling were good in the broad- jump. Dick Brown, Harry Chalfant, and Euclid Greene were the top performers in the high and low- hurdle events. Toward the end of the year, Gaebe, Eyermann, Walling and Dugan participated in the State track meet, where Dugan managed a second in the 220-yard run. Several of last year's track men graduated: but many of the thinclads are hack this year for Captain McClain's squad. Dugan, Gaebe, Champ, Nowlin, Mooney, Fuchs, Corbett, Dain, Greene, Kaltwasser and other seniors will form the backbone of this yearis team: also on the varsity team will be Chalfant, Taylor, Stiebel, and others who will be preparing for future seasons at Western. 31064 QCDFKI VV.
