Alex was able to pass the course, aided by the aptaun and Chuclt Eberle vvho combuned el- lorts. His most treasured hobby was his collection of guns, and he would sit by the hour describing his guns and the history behind them. Tne past year was one of high achievement. Mai. .l. If. Conrad, Field Artillery, Ll. S. Army, came to be the new Drolessor ol Military Science and Tactics. Assisted by a stall composed ol Statl Sgt. Coon and Sgt Martin ol the U S. Army and Capt putt and Lieut. liflfarner he soon hao the military program going at top speed In the lall, the new cadets joined the I2 Q I C. by talcing the pledge in an impressive ceremony The bat- talion duicldy rounded into a well-trained unit. Sunday parades were started, to the delight ol throngs ol visitors. Military classes were stressed from the beginning, lor two government inspections were on the schedule. By Christ- mas time, the entire corps performed as a veteran outlit A line group ol cadet olticers and non-coms was ap- pointed, and they furnished inspiring leadership. Qn February 9, the corps had the First G. l. Western made a splendid showing before lour visiting army ohcicers. Then began the big push for the spring inspection on May 9 and TO. 'Q t 4 YEAR cadets trudged out into the country under lull paclcs on many an all-day held problem, flxttaclc and defense maneuvers were practiced, and lunch was served in the Field, As G. l. approached, Mai. Conrad used many excel- lent government Films for military instruction. These were invaluable tor that purpose. Extra review classes were held. All drills vvere perfected. Barraclfs and equip- ment vvere put into top condition. Then came the climax ol the military year, vvith Lieut. Col. J. O. Stephenson and Mai. l-l. l:. Ross, representing the War Department, spending tvvo days on the campus examining the cadets in all phases ol military vvorlc Every man in the corps, from the highest ollicer to the lowest private, rose to the occasion and did his pest. When the supreme test was over, the feeling among the cadets and otlicers was that they had made an excellent shovving. And socslog, slogcfdrill, drill--vvorlt, vvorlc- ' throughout the year taught Western cadets the real mean- ing ol military training and prepared them for whatever may come. Though twice within the 5-yard stripe, they lailed to score, while the Billikens, led by Ken Wild, Finally deleated Western, l4-O. Then came the lirst league victory. The Raiders trailed Burroughs, 7-6, at the hall, but when the chips were down in the last quarter, Eberlels 40-yard pass to Frazer brought a 'l3-7 triumph. Chuclt Kirsch beat it out on the drums lor his third year, aided by l.each. Fox surprised everyone by his slcill on the piano. A new violin section, Vedder and Grass- lield, added melody to the group. The Westernaires played in assembly, lor school plays, in the Christmas extravaganza, and received an ovation at the Final musical concert Graduates will always remember the merry swingsters as one ol the most pleasant diversions at Ulfestern. Pugr 110 Capt. Lowell Little developed the best glee club that Western has had in years. The Kadets could really sing, and their harmony and expression vvere a delight to hear. They appeared in many school programs and at East St. Louis, Jerseyville. Alton, and Monticello Coi- lege. They were outstanding in the last musical concert ol the year. lheir repertoire ranged lrom negro spirituals to martial airs, and the cadet corps loved it. A special Senior Quartet, Jones, lx! Lamb Hunter, and pococlf was selected to sing the lare fvell song at commencement. With such a variety of voices, the glee club should cons tinue its success next year. , .
