The road out may be painful but it must be overcome within the self. Which path will you seek? As J Walk Ohis Cand J Wonder Why 1972 Brown and Gold Yearbook Who am 9? Am 9 just a reflection in the mirror, a parental carbon copy, or just another pretty face? 9 am a reflection thaf speaks to me and tells me that 9 accept ot reject that image of myself. 9 exist as J am and what 9 see is the physical and the physical is me. Yet there is more to me. Shere exists a need to I express myself to others to allow others to see-my 12 Or 1 image and fo accept just as J have it t Ten cc J want to be one of the beautiful people. 9 want to be loved. But sometimes 9 don’t see others as beautiful, and 9’m not seen by them as beautiful. Because 9 see a little, can 9 go deeply enough to see totally? 9 fave an urge to be filled, to feel good inside, to feel 9 belong, to feel that 9 am worth something, to be really free, to expand my mind and my heart. J am alone. J am influenced by sights, sounds, persons, events, values, meanings - - history. And yet if is J who must choose. Jt is J who must be: it is J who must live. How do 9 know who or what to choose? Ghere are so many choices to choose from, some real and yet some so very unreal. What am 9 to Gecome? What am 9 to do? 9 cannot remain as J am now; 9 must move, change, become. Because 9 am different, because 9 think differently, because 9 dress and act differently, and because J am so sensitive; 9 feel life and experience the meaning of persons. J am seen as weird. J am mistrusted by adults and by my own peets. J cannot allow injustice, hatred, discrimination, poverty and war to continue to be destructive of man and freedom, to be destructive of myself, my values, my friends. J must speak out; J must act - violently if necessary since this seems to be the only language that some will accept. Who J am today is reaching toward who 9 will be tomorrow. What 9 appear to be today and the way 9 will appear to be tomorrow will change. A new self continues to emerge - - to be accepted and to be loved by myself and by others. Where do 9 go? Follow the river - - Where do 9 go? Follow the sun - - Where is the something, where Js the someone, that tells me Why 9 live and die? Why do 9 live? Why do 9 die? Coles it) Gell me where..... Gell me why.... a dds, eae Oe ee all As 9 look around me, not understanding what J see, 9 can’t help but wonder is there any time left for me? How will we explain it to our children - the water dead, the river red? America the beautiful, what happened? Once a beholding beauty, now a mark of man’s ignorance. Destroying the environment endangers all life; the future only holds death for all. However, technology pushes on continuing to create even greater problems. We are but a tiny sphere cast in an endless sea of space where interactions among the universe are necessary yet within our own planetary boundaries man cannot cooperatively interact amongst his own kind. Ghus wars exist. Ghe superior intelligence of man has lead to the many unnecessary deaths of others. How long can man survive when all the pins are down? Jt is a useless struggle. Chicago Tete ae A €; Nyy ite Passe Diath “= Sometimes 9 cry if 9 stop to think about it for J found out I’ve got to live for today because you can’t promise me tomorrow. J could touch but wouldn't. Your hand was dirty, calloused, and lying in a pool of blood, With a rifle for a body. (Vivianne Schaefer) Wake up foolish people, Wake up from your dream. Can’t you see what has happened? Ghe whole human race, Yes the whole human race needs help. Ghe people are dying, Ghe people are crying, for so many years But no one hears. Ghey’re ruining this world for you and for me. Ghe big heads of state, won’t let us be free. Ghey made the rules once, But it didn’t work out. Now we must try again before they kill us off. We don’t want to die, Please let’s change it all. Let’s just love one another Let’s show peace for each other. We can make it happen We can change this world Let's make it happen. Come on. It's up to me. It’s up to you. Can’t stand it no more Jt better end soon, my friend. Friendship cannot be hurried. Jt takes time to ripen. Jt needs a background of humorous, wearisome, or even tragic events shared together, wn y- es a certain tract of memories shared in common, so that you know that your own life and your companion’s have really moved for some time in the same channel. Jt needs interchange of books, meals together, discussion of one another’s whims with mutual friends to gain a proper ptospective. Jt is set in a rich haze of hal{-remembered occasions, sudden glimpses, ludicrous pranks, unsuspected observations, midnight confidences when heart spoke to candid heart. (Christopher Morley) Feelings captured by Jerry Fochtman 25 J have nothing to share with you but my life. J have nothing to experience with you but my love. Ghis is all, Js all enough? (Dorthy Law Nolte) 29 wean ee ae as 7 ews paete’ sxe Photography by David L. Moore Shall this child ever know the potential of his mind? He looks to be so empty of self-directed life. Will the death of the university release the chains restraining his potential for being, leaving him to discover the energy source behind those eyes, or will they be sealed forever along with the concept of a true university? I fear that, like those before him, he will become stifled, frustrated, confined, oppressed. That’s what it has been, a relationship that has attempted and possibly succeeded in closing minds to the deep gloomy ranks of the apathetic. Will this child also be a product of W.M.U., an institute dedicated to the principles of manufacturing scholars, mathematicians, and technicians — pretty people with vacant smiles who know but too well how to exist in our society. Or is it possible that this child will build his world from truth and compassion, knowing in his heart that it is free for all to hold. Could he, as a student at Western, find such truth and compassion of which to build his world? Certainly he couldn’t find it here today. W.M.U. has failed as a stimulus for truth, it is cold and impersonal. Like a warm body, love given is love received, W.M.U., gives no warmth and it receives no warmth. Why must he carry on our struggle for a breath of freedom against a senseless plan to protect us from ourselves. The time is now for those with any hope for universal freedom. He seems to sense the immediacy at hand, but you, the manipulator, must awaken from your long cold slumber and rejoin us on a planet capable of love and compassion. Stand with this child as he reaches out for the truth and do not be afraid of what is there for it is only the truth — (David L. Moore) 31 RADE Reaching another person, and becoming one with another friendship and love is not a goal to be gained, a prize to be won, a game to be played but a process - - a process of knowledge, involvement, giving, and receiving, a process which characterizes life not as competition but as sharing. 32 ‘ ‘$3 AG Jf . 2 = ad ‘wast 4.8 really ought to get to know each other better. It was born to unite young college women in a common purpose of strengthening their lives so that in everyday living they will be able to stand true to Christian principles. Belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and perfect example for the children of God, is the basic concept for which the club stands. By strong friendship and the close ties of a sisterhood, the Kappa Phi Club will help its members achieve the qualities of a Christian life. Since becoming Christ-like is not a one-step process, but a continual “growing towards’, human beings need to be in constant contact with that which will aid them in this growth. The Kappa Phi Club has a two-fold purpose: first, to educate and there-by enrich and deepen personal religious lives, and, sec- ond, to educate in ways which will enable Kappa Phi girls to live their Christianity — through church and community services. love, give them swift chase, tell me all that you've seen on earth, all that you've heard, and 9 shall pass them through my entrails’ secret forge till slowly, with profound caresses, play and laughter, stones, water, fire, and earth shall be transformed to spirit, and the mud-winged and heavy soul, freed of its flesh, shall like a flame serene and fade in sun.” (Nikos Kazantzakis) (Kahil Gibran) ‘ eennussnee : J 438 Emotions captured by Gary Gifford 440 The end has finally come. The final pages of Yearbook 72 have been shipped off. Some of us found out it was quite a job to express ourselves in 464 pages. But never fail, you, the staff got yourselves together to put out a fantastic book. Yearbook 72, I believe, really expresses my personal feelings of the situation we are now faced with. I want to thank all the people who kept me company during those long nights at deadline time — Ferg, Peg, Nancy, Brung, and Tammie. Also, I want to send a special thank you to my concerned staff members who devoted their precious time and effort for one hellava book. To Jerry Elmore, a fantastic representative, thank you; Stevens Studio thanks for a great job. I cannot express the thank you that my tremendous troop of photographers should receive, I just hope they learned something from their assignments, you did a great job. Thank you to the people who shared and experienced with myself the process of organizing and publishing a yearbook. Bob and Kirk, thank you for giving your best efforts into selling the book; Mr. Freeman, thank you for the little bits of advise that kept me going. And lastly, a warm Thank You to my roommates and close friends that kept me together. It’s been quite a trip.
