forc-:wor VISION' The last crisp leaf has fallen from the oak tree, And across November fields the eye sees far. The woodland boughs are only lacework patterns, And offer to the view no leafy bar, Except for here and there a nest abandoned. Now is the time to see the distant ridge Dark with spruceagainst a lilac skyline, A shining creek, a stalwart wooden bridge That looks much like a quaint, old covered wagon, Or still, perhaps a house beneath tall pines, Its friendly woodsmoke trailing from the chimney, Its windows wide through which warm lamplight shines. And it would seem that there must be a time For man to sec the realm of life that lies In distances beyond the obvious- A clear perspective-with far-reaching eyes. AMBITION Poised on the breath of earth she stands Mistress of high esteem, Within her hand a lighted torch. VVithin her eyes a dream. Her heart is sterling, yea, but cold Unless you woo it long! Her smile is challenge, voice a sweet And incandescent song.
