The woodland boughs are only lacework patterns, And offer to the view no leafy bar, Except for here and there a nest abandoned. Now is the time to see the distant ridge Dark with spruceagainst a lilac skyline, A shining creek, a stalwart wooden bridge That looks much like a quaint, old covered wagon, Or still, perhaps a house beneath tall pines, Its friendly woodsmoke trailing from the chimney, Its windows wide through which warm lamplight shines. And it would seem that there must be a time For man to sec the realm of life that lies In distances beyond the obvious- A clear perspective-with far-reaching eyes. AMBITION Poised on the breath of earth she stands Mistress of high esteem, Within her hand a lighted torch. VVithin her eyes a dream. Her heart is sterling, yea, but cold Unless you woo it long! Her smile is challenge, voice a sweet And incandescent song. She beckons fervently until, Long-following, near and far, You mount her stairs and quietly Reach upward for a star. -Florence Marie Taylor -Genevieve B31-tole A cieciication XYe are ever thankful to him for his untiring efforts to help with the annuals, having been the advisor for the past three yearbooks. He has succesfully taught our Commercial depart- ment, making Secretarial work a pleasure to all who came under his supervision. To many he has proven to be a true friend ever ready to counsel or reprove in a truly Christian way. By his excellent example he has shown us the real value of leading a Christian life. lt is with deep appreciation and grateful hearts that we dedicate this Torch to Nr, Arthur Lanning. 4 my v ,f fx .,,, if ,Qi , S x gs-,E U v fgzsu, .Q ' rl Y A g m ' FEQQRQEQ, , Zwfilx x if Q. In a short time the Senior Class of l953 will no longer exist as an organized group. You will have reached another goal in life, and will move forward to other activities. Your four years in high school were only a few steps on your pathway of life. Our prayer is that the Christian training you have received in your homes. churches. and schools, have kindled in you an earnest desire to walk the pathway of true Christianity, trusting that your God is willing and able to care for you each step of the way. One step thou seest - then go forward boldly, One step is far enough for faith to see: Take that, and thy next duty shall be wld thee, For step by step thy Lord is leading thee. V 6 Sclml Loml Hearty congratulations to the Graduating Class of '53 from the Board of Trustees of VVestern Michigan Christian High School. You have not arrived as some might think upon coin- pletion of a certain amount of work, in this case graduation. On the contrary. the door is swinging open to many avenues of opportunity. God grant you the grace to be Christian rnen and women in this age when they are so sorely needed. In whatever vocation of life you may choose, may the grace of God that is in you, help you to he a witness. Young men, young women, be soldiers of the Lord jesus Christ. After many rehearsals under the capable direction of Mr. E. lYalhout and Mr. E. .loling the play proved a success with good entertainment for all. 36 Ldsekdll NVith the familiar cry of play ball the XVarriors again take to the playing fielcl for their thircl season. NVith the return of three seniors and a fine crew of young hopefuls we should certainly have a good season.
