Thou canst not see today the hidden meaning Of My command, but thou the light shall goin, Walk on in faith, upon My promise leaning, And as thou goest all shall be made plain. One step thou seest-then go forward boldly, One step is far enough for faith to see, Take that, and thy next duty shall be told thee. For step by step thy lord is leading thee. Stand not in fear thy adversaries counting, Dare every peril, save to disobey, Thou shalt march on, all obstacles surmounting, For l, the Strong, will open up the way. Wherefore go gladly to the task assigned thee, Having My promise, needing nothing more Than iust to know, where'er the future finds thee, In all thy iourneying l go before. Author unknown DEDICATION MR. EDWARD JOLING Mr. Joling is a faculty member who is well-known to every . graduating Senior. He ioined our faculty when we were Soph- omores in Hartford Christian, so it is with deep friendship that we dedicate our last and final memory to him. We have come to recognize him as an excellent instructor, a capable leader, a fine Christian example and a grand person to know. Thus, we, the Seniors sincerely dedicate our 'Torch' to you, Mr. Joling. Standing, left to right: J. Diephouse, I.. Hollar, Rev. G. Vander Kooi, A. De Vos, J Weesies, C. De Wall. Seated, left to right: J. Kuiper, J. Niemeyer, M. De Young, G. De Kruyter, J. Musch Not pictured: F. Winter, President. BOARD We, the Board of Trustees, congratulate the Senior Class of 1951. You have many reasons for reioicing. Among other things: God-fearing parents who were willing to sacrifice to give you an education in a Christian High School. Devoted teachers imbibed with the love of God in their hearts training you to be good citizens, not only of this world but of the heavenly kingdom as well. An efficient principal and faculty maintaining order and discipline, having your welfare at heart. A board who desires to see that the fundamental principles of Christ are upheld. How we thank God for all of these and many more blessings. We say to you, Go forward young man, young woman. Remember all the good things you were taught in years past and your days in the future will be happy days with your Lord. May God bless each one of you, whatever your vocation in life may be, is our sincere prayer. N V fs mv i ADMINISTRATION I IE E:- I U FACULTY MRS. D. BARRETT, B.S. EDWARD JOLING, A.B. I0 Michigan State College Home Economics SARAH LEMON, A.B. Latin, Organic Science The Junior and Senior years of our high school career have been skillfully guided to a pleasant and happy close by our instructors. The chapel meditations which they have given served as an inspiration to each one of us, and revealed to us the consecration of their individual lives to God. They have set before us an example of Spirituality, Service, and Sociability. To Mr. Huibregtse we extend our heart- iest Thank You for the kind and under- standing leadership he has shown to us, for his willingness to share our problems as well as our ioys, for his patience with Calvin College Social Science E. W. BOOT, A.B., M.A. us, and above all his ever present faith in God. May God richly bless the faculty and our principal as they continue to prepare young lives, like our own, for Christian Service. ROBERT TJAPKES, A.B. of Chicago Commercial ll I 9 o TO .YOU GRADUATES OF 1951 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. -Prov. 3:6 The above passage expresses very well the purpose of Christian education. To acknowledge Him in all our ways covers the whole area of life's action. lt implies that we try to direct our ways according to His precepts and then look to Him for guidance and illumination. In working together at Christian High we have endeavored to acknowledge Him in all phases of our school life. Will you acknowledge Him as you leave school and your ways separate- some of you to go to college, some of you to find places in business or industry, some of you to enter the service of your country, and some of you to enter other fields of activity? We are interested in your success in life, but we are more interested in your spiritual success. If you acknowledge Him in all your ways you have the promise that He will direct your paths. Our prayer is that you will acknowledge Him in all your undertakings and that you may strive to make your choices so that you may know they are in accord with His way for you. 1 Principal 12? g'o'nU,u ,-. CLASSES BIBLE Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth . . . Eccl. 12:1 ONLY A DREAM I dreamed a dream - or was it a dream? For a picture haunted my mind Of a world without a Bible, Or a church of any kind, A world without a place to pray, And no Book to point the heavenly way. Oh, the dream that I dreamed held sadness, For I listened the whole day long And I heard no note of gladness, And I hear no comforting song! For the world without a Bible would be A place of mourning and misery. As Israel 'neath the willows Could sing no song of praise, So a world without church or Bible No paean of ioy could raise. Ah, think how sad the years, and long, With no psalm, no hymn, no spiritual song! But dreams are passing fancies, And mine was banished soon, For I heard the church bells ringing, And I heard a grand old tuneg And my spirit reioiced at what I heard And I lifted my voice with every word- Come, we that love the lord, And let our ioys be known, Join in a song with sweet accord. And thus surround the throne. Our praises on earth are but preludes sweet To what we shall sing at the Saviour's feet. - William M. Runyan SECRETARIAL SCIENCES TYPING l Typing, Shorthand, and Bookkeeping still remain an important factor in our school's curriculum. The able instructors, Miss Lemon ond Mr. Lanning train the students in the way of commercial practice. DICTATION AND TRANSCRIPTION INDUSTRIAL ARTS MECHANICAL DRAWING J, if New in our curriculum is the Mechanical Drawing course under the supervision of Mr. Gillesse. The boys take an interest in the course which can be used to their advan- tage after they graduate. 46 SHOP With limited facilities, the boys produce many fine pieces of furniture in the shop classes, instructed by Mr. Walcott. HOME ECONOMICS TAILORING Foons CLASSl The home-ec classes were in- structive as well as interesting these two semesters. Under the able instruction of Mrs. Ray Bar- rett, we learned much concerning the principles of sewing and cooking in our well supplied laboratory. 47 SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CHEMISTRY LAB Sing a song of sulfide A beaker full of lime Four and twenty test tubes Breaking all the time. When the cork is taken out Fumes begin to reek - Isn't that an awful mess To have five times a week! Between test tubes, bunsen burners, and cylinders, peer the eager faces of young chemists. Through experimentation and study of Chemistry, the students see the wisdom and wonder of God's Creation. The Social Science and History courses acquaint the students with the past history of our own Amer- ica, and our neighboring coun- tries abroad. 48 SOCIAL SCIENCE STUDY HALL At the present time, study hall is being held in the library. Even though the library is not yet complete, it proves very beneficial for reference purposes. The study hall also accommodates the students who remain after school for such extra-curricular courses as 7th and 8th periods! And of course -- we also study here. w.M.c.H. With humble thanksgiving the road we retrace: Thou never hast failed us, our strength and our stay! To whom should we turn for the rest of the way? Through dangers, through darkness, by day and by night Thou ever hast guided, and guided us right, ln Thee we have trusted, and peacefully lay Our hand into Thy hand for the rest ofthe way.
