We, the yearbook staff, have designed the l960 PIONEER, In this annual we have attempted to show how an educational experience at Western Mennonite School can introduce us to life. Although as students we are untranslatable as to what we are and are not, have and have not, and although one can not say just where influences stop and start, we have made an effort to picture at .least the how of a studen1.'s claim, I AM A PART OF ALL THAT I HAVE MET . . . They have come to us from East and West: the port city of Norfolk, Virginia, flat Kansas wheatlandsg the glass city of Toledo, Ohio, the Indian mission fieldg Pennsylvania farms, the logging community of Brewton, Alabamag Lancaster Mennonite School girls' dormitory, the nation's smallest state, Delawareg from Oregon fields. Leaving families, colleges, careers, and VS units behind, they have come to Western because of a vision. The vision must sometimes be blurred by piles of unchecked test papers and uncooperative students, but it can also be intensified by the dawn of enlight- enment and creativity on an eager pupil's face. Through the vision they can look ahead into the future and realize the poten- tial of each student. With the added wisdom of experience, they can also anticipate the adjustments and problems which will be a part of our maturing. To help us face the future with confidence anda stable faith in God they have dedicated themselves. And they are dedicated because they are part of a vision. As they impart knowledge to us, we also become a part of the great vision which lcindles in us a desire to live meaningful lives---lives which will also have an outlook for the future of those to whom we are dedicated. Within each human soul liesa thirst accompanied by potential to search for something to satisfy that thirst. Youth wants to lcnow and Western Men- nonite School is a part of the search to satisfy that thirst for knowledge. There are some who only half -heartedly search to satisfy their inward longing 3 they are satisfied to have moistened their lips.. But there are others who, after a taste of knowledge feverishly search for more. And they will find, because knowledge will be found by those who willingly search for it. But with the increase of knowledge comes also the realization of the vast expanse of knowledge still beyond reach. It is that realization which makes us humang which makes us have faith inan all-knowing God. We then re- ceive shocks to our own little thought systems and the more we know, the more we know that we need to know more. The students at Western find themselves a part of the search for knowledge when they discover the fascinating story of man in history classy the intri- cate functions and processes of the humanbody in health classg the stimulation of a hard game of basketball in P. E. classy the orderly construction of the elements in chemistry classg the correct grammatical structures of our lan- guage and the best that has been written and expressed through it in English classg the inspiration of a chorus singing together in music classg and God, throughout every class, but particularly in Bible class. SO THAT HE ALONE SHOULD STAND FIRST IN EVERYTHING. For I am certain of this very thing, that He who beganthe good work in you will go on until the day of Jesus Christ to complete it. The beginning of Reality is the good work of Salvation. God through the Holy Spirit continues by om' personal faith to increase and strengthen this good work. Western Mennonite School is dedicated to the task of furthering this good work in every student. Western is not serving in the suse of aiding God in His work but more importantly as a sanctified instrument through which and by which God can perform His work unhindered in the lives of its students. One of the pleasures that partly compensate for the stress of administration is the observations made andthe expres- sions heard from our gmdl-lates ofthe spiritual blessings received while at Western resulting in changed interests. - Western's high- est interest and goal is intertwined in the Godly service and work of those who became a living part of her as students and then have gone out for God and for our Church showing acontinued growth through following God's revealed plan for their lives. You represent a valuable and vitaladdition to this growing num- ber of dedicated altunni. You have received much from Westerng you should in turn give much to others. My thoughts and prayers shall follow you away from Western to your places of life. For each of youl would hope that UCHRISTALONE SHOULD STAND FIRST IN EVERYTHING. In isti T ankfulness, Paul E. Begun by jesus Christ nearly 2000 years ago, the Church has grown from its humble beginning of 12 men of God to a world-wide institution more power- ful and influential than any other force in the world. For it men have died and because of it men live. Our own particular part of this vast organization has been named the Mennonite Church aftera man, Menno Sim ons, who led and inspired the early Anabaptists. During the following years, Mennonites migrated tothe New World and founded a church there. With the development of a Mennonite Church on the Pacific Coast came the need for a church high school and the plans for such a project were developed. Today with 120 students, Western Mennonite School is a small part of the whole Mennonite Church and exists for the purpose of enlight- enment as expressed in its mottog The entrance of Thy words giveth light. Psalms l19:l3O To each student, Christ is presented as the only means of our salvation and the incentive for living: by daily chapel talks, regularly-scheduled and spontaneous prayer meetingsg singspirationsg walks in the solitude of the firs surrounding the campus where we can loaf and invite our souls g spring and fall revival emphasis, Bible Club and cell groupsg off-campus witnessing through the extension programg the fellowship of Christian friends, the study of Old and New Testament history in Bible classesg the challenge of a happy, victorious Christian experience in Victorious Living classy the work of otu' Church in missions and evangelism in Missions class, and in our private devotions during the time set aside in the evening known as quiet period. We have taken part in and have become a part of all these activities. They have given us of their value and so we have a part of them in us. It is not what we have gained only, but the mutual experience which has taught us to ad- just to a great brotherhood of sharing---the Church. Three literaries have been organized on the campus this year, King Creek, Clarion, and Vesperian. An intense rivalry among the three spurs each of them to lively programs throughout the literary year. The crowning event of the year comes when the literary contest is held. The winners are natu- rally very much elated, and the losers react in much the same way as most losers do. They determine to win the following year. Clubs are offerred to those who wish to express themselves creatively through hobbies and special interests: for music lovers, drama enthusiasts, young seamstresses, sportsmen, aspiring ham operators , and those who like to rough it they provide an avenue of expression. I Besides organized activities, there are spontaneous activities at any time on the campus. Someone wants to do something different, and so two or three people or a whole group do something together: Maybe it will be a walk to the river, making popcorn in the kitchen a group singing through David, Q Shepherd EFX just for the fun of it, or just a gang of kids in the Snack Shop talking together, trying to solve the world's problems. J Wherever there are students, you will find activities--wholesome, spir- activities which originated in an idea. Every day on our campus, depending upon the time of year, one can see students playing together in teams: scattering softballs to foreign fields batting a shuttlecock back and forth dribbling a basketball across the gym floor huddling before a game of football dividing loyal ties on two sides of a net or even in the cheering from the sidelines. Everyone knows what a disastrous effect a stubborn player can have in any game--it becomes impossible for the team to move forward as a unit and they become powerless. But any team member also knows the thrill of a co- operative team that seems to co-ordinate in perfect precision, making it possible for the team to score. So besides the valuable physical exercise gained from participating in sports, we learn valuable lessons in co-operation--a preparation for living in the complex society of our world. We learn to accept defeat, not placing the blame on any particular team member, but maturely accepting our share of the blame. Equally as hard, we learn to accept victory without feeling superior. Teamwork calls for the best from each of us, malclng us accept our responsibility and giving us the thrill of victory in return. . . . We are happy teen- agers who enjoy working, studying, and playing with other Christian young people. In our respective dormitories we let loose and expose our mischievous other selves through pillow fights and harmless pranks., Sometimes, though, we are serious, and with a roommate or good friend we look ahead to the future and discuss the problems which we face. There are many problems and we could become discouraged and pessimistic because of their number and immensity, but we are young and undaunted. We like parties and good times. On our campus, dress-up dinners are social highlights. When the poster announcing the next dress-up supper is posted, students can be seen clustered around it--the girls giggling and apprehensive, the boys puzzled or possessed with a secretive air which results in a certain girl nodding her head yes in the near future. The most interesting thing about our society at Western is that we share a com- mon goal, yet each has a personality distinctly his own. By living together we are often able to get close enough to each other to see through different eyes. When this happens, we have overcome the greatest ailment of society--the failure to become part of the view of another's vision. Our friends intrique us and we wonder about people and ourselves--what makes us act the way we do? But we love life and we are happy to be a part of our world. We realize, though, that we are the leaders of tornori-ow's world, and we hope to convert our youthful energy and enthusiasm into preparing to do our part in becoming part of even greater societies. . . .
