I 1 To these Congregations, in humblegratituude, , We dedicate the '58 Pioneer i Foreword ln this annual we have endeavored to present our school, which we love, to you that you may feel akin to her and better understandg - Her policies Her work - ' U and f Her purpose. , We trust that through this annual you will develop a deeper appre- ciation 'for Western. A A I , A T I School is over now and you are going out to make your own way in a world of opportunity. You should be prepared to make good use of the opportunities which are yours. However, in looking for opportunities, avoid opportunism, which is taking advantage of others in order to advance one's self. Opportunism is not in keeping with Christian principles for success. What opportunities will you have as you leave School? One of the opportunities you will have all through life is the privilege to make friends. Someone has said that a man is known by the company which he keeps. With the opportunity of forming friendships comes also the responsi- bility to influence one's friends for the right. You will have many opportunities to disci- pline yourself. ln the home and in school others have corrected you and directed your activities to a large extent. If you would succeed in life, you will need to assume the responsibility of your own discipline and direc- tion of your activities. There may be factors, such as abilities, aptitudes, finances or other circumstances which may decide to some extent what your vocation will be, and yet it is your opportunity to evaluate these factors and decide on a voca- tion. lt is important that what you choose is something in which you will be happy, and in which you can supply some needed goods or service for humanity. Opportunities for Christian service and witnessing will not be lacking. The opportuni- ty of Bible reading and prayer is yours, and in this you want to be faithful, lest opportunities for evil overtake you. The world needsa helping hand and the witness of a true Christian. This is your opportunity. God bless you, Seniors. Very sincerely, V Afizff-V --QQ Lia, X..,a.-.Q,sn..41g Edwin L. Each week we sent a group into Salem to pass out tracts. Every other week we sent singing groups to the Rest Haven Home and the Cottage Conva- lescent Home in Salem. Several times this year we sent singing groups to the Rescue Mission in Portland. We trust that many souls were blessed and were drawn to a closer walk with God as a result of our efforts. Every Friday the students had charge of chapel. Usually their program in- cluded several talks on subiects which are vital to the lives of young Christ- ians, and special music. These were planned and presented by the students themselves. A lot of work goes into the preparing of the Friday morning chapel programs- -at least you would come to that con- clusion if you could have peeked in on one of the meetings of the chapel committee. There would have been books strewn all over the table. You'd have seen Dave tearing his hair, Judy wearing a frown of concentration l?l and Liz writing everything but programs dn her paper. Don't worry that's iust their way of making genius burn. This year they hiked almost every two weeks---rain or shine. They learned how to build fires and cook out and how to really appreciate the out ol doors. l-li-lite of their club activities was a trip to lvlt. Hood in Feb- ruary. 56 We thank Thee, Father, for the beauty ol the earth, and of the heavens overhead. What can surpass in loveliness the tiny snowflake which thou hast so intricately designed or sun- set which is ever new and each more beautiful than the last? For this privilege that we, the nature club, have had of looking into the wonders ot thy great creation we thank Thee. Hi-Landers Club The disappointments of duck-hunting, competitive target practice, .lim Bond's wild lite picture, the strenuous hours of basketball, the thrill of chasing a coon, all these will be held as fond memories of Sports- men's Club. Thanks, Bro. Showalter, for the fun we've had in Sportsmen's Club. Science Club Sportsman Club Current scientific happen- ings played a big, role in making Paul Yoder's Science Club especially active this year. Talk of sputniks and rockets created an interest- in making and launching a rocket. The boys also saw scientific films, made crystals, and con- structed a geniac or human brain. ln April the club at- tended the state fair in Corvalis. Hurry or weill be late, out in- to the stormy night we slip. One illetated memberslips on the mud- dy path. Each girl clutches in her honda carefully guardedsheaf of papers. Through the darkness a cheery light shines, soon there is an answer to our knock and once more we are in the abode of one of our church's tinest writ- ers. Each member reads the manu- scripts which she has written. Perhaps it is poetry or a bit of prose. Next we'll listen to the words of some of the world's es- tablished literary figures, which brings very vividly to our minds the ambition of every writer to some day produce a work worthy of publication. You get the film ready while I mix the chemicals. Okay, turn off the lights and welll run it right through this solution. There, that did it. Just let them sit tor a few minutes and theyill be all ready. Now turn on the light and lets look at our finished product. Oops! What hapf pened? l guess the camera wasnyt any good! Oh,,well, we had fun this year in Aramac Club, didn't we? Astronomy Club ls it a bir-il? ls it sputnik? No, itis lust one of the model airplanes made in model club. Besides making airplanes the members of this club make boats, cars, trains, busses, and other moclels which develop skill an:l craftsmanship ot the hancls. It is amazing how skill- ful these boys have become in the intricate, artistic hobby of building morlels. The Astronomy Club, the newest club on our campus, consisted of five members under the expert soponsorship of Timothy Strubhar. The most important project that the club unflertook, with the help of Brother Strubhar, anal several of the fellows, was making a tele- scope. The aim ot the members was to learn more about the heavens and to learn to appre- ciate the wonders of Go:l's creation. Model Club Crafts Club Five energetic boys with Brother Lincl as sponsor, tested their ability in hitting the bulls eye each club night in the gym. Long range shooting outside was attemptezl also. The poor old target is nearly shatterecl from being pierced so often by the arrows of the boys from the Archery Club. 60 Twelve girls met in the reception room for fellowship as they worked with their hands on pretty and practical projects these girls with Emily Lantz made up the Crafts Club.
