| | | | | | With the recognition of local sororities and fraternities at Western a number of social changes have been evi- dent. Rush” parties and ‘’pledging’’ have become pop- ular, and the average freshman looks forward to being a part of a second-semester pledge class. College-spon- sored dances on we ekends have become common events, and the question of ‘what to do’ has become less of a familiar wail. Not new, but still big, events are the two formal dances on Western's campus—the Talisman and the Military Balls. The queens of these affairs, as they are crowned each year, provide an aura of glamour, and the position of queen is a much-vied-for honor. Still fun is Western’s Sadie Hawkins’ Day Dance, which provides barrels of laughter as Li'l Abners and Daisy Maes of varying sizes and shapes take their place and Marryin’ Sam performs his official duty. MR. MILLARD GIPSON Mr. Millard Gipson richly deserves the tribute and the honor of being chosen by the TALISMAN staff in the 1963 dedication. In making this dedication, we express heartfelt appre- ciation for the opportunity we have had of working with Mr. Gipson. We, the staff, as no other group, can appre- ciate and recognize the competence and diligence with which he has sponsored the TALISMAN for the past five years. Mr. Gipson sponsors this large publication and also fulfills his regularly assigned duties as an effective mem- ber of the faculty in the Department of Agriculture. His advisory position on the TALISMAN has required many extra meeiings in the evenings in addition to the regular meetings fitted into a full day’s schedule; yet he has found time to counsel with his students and to guide them in their chosen fields. He is a friend to those stu- dents who know him. The fine traits which are basic to Mr. Gipson are symbolic to the TALISMAN, as its pages will reflect through the years. . The TALISMAN symbolizes the achievements of the past year; but without proper advice and guidance, this book would not be truly representative of Western. The leadership so aptly provided by Mr. Millard Gipson is the mainstay of our presentation to Western of this year’s TALISMAN. DEDICATION 17
