EEE ——— ni Olrie Wandering, ever wandering, with no soul-sought goal in view, A moment here, a moment there; a pause, a step or two. Dormant, down among the ruins; blending dust with dust— Rising, slowly ever within me, falling, willed to fall again, earth-shunned rust; rust rusting rust— Vaguely, I watched the first star of evening, Rising neath the florid canopy of a lovely, lonely purple cloud, heavily, hovering there; I gazed, I languidly saw the cloud, I saw but did not care; I grimly grinned; reflecting, shrank—merging with the shadows I, deeply darkened, seem to share. Then, along the interminable passage of Time, that seemed to end with me, A gentle voice floated down—a chiming, rhyming sort of sound—voicing all that was, all that is, and all that is to be; “Make a wish! There’s the evening star: star light, star bright—;” came the silent soul-soft decree; My spirit groaned—I had no wish; what I was I long had been—in greying, decaying finality. Yet I arose to brush away the dwindling fragments and the clinging dust; And walking with a level chin, I drew on my shadow’s shadowy trust, And against my fear of the lengthening leer, of the approaching encroaching dusk, I mingled my shadow with the growing shadows—surrendered; the clinging loathsome husk. And the wandering cloud faded, blending with the night; The evening star was joined by a host to spangle the heavens with light. Charles A. Loudermilk, Jr. Tee SalReAGV, EER As I journey on this varying Highway of Life, Sometimes stretching forth inviting one to travel; Other times supplying acute bends and rocky surface And huge hills that I must exert all my strength to climb, Often when I travel on the Highway thus I am tempted to halt my journey; Lay down my troublesome load and rest myself. But I have heard stories of men like me I Who yielded to that impulse And who, once off the Highway, were lost in some forlorn forest, And never could resume their journey. S. E. Holland.
