EEE ——— ni Olrie Wandering, ever wandering, with no soul-sought goal in view, A moment here, a moment there; a pause, a step or two. Dormant, down among the ruins; blending dust with dust— Rising, slowly ever within me, falling, willed to fall again, earth-shunned rust; rust rusting rust— Vaguely, I watched the first star of evening, Rising neath the florid canopy of a lovely, lonely purple cloud, heavily, hovering there; I gazed, I languidly saw the cloud, I saw but did not care; I grimly grinned; reflecting, shrank—merging with the shadows I, deeply darkened, seem to share. Then, along the interminable passage of Time, that seemed to end with me, A gentle voice floated down—a chiming, rhyming sort of sound—voicing all that was, all that is, and all that is to be; “Make a wish! There’s the evening star: star light, star bright—;” came the silent soul-soft decree; My spirit groaned—I had no wish; what I was I long had been—in greying, decaying finality. Yet I arose to brush away the dwindling fragments and the clinging dust; And walking with a level chin, I drew on my shadow’s shadowy trust, And against my fear of the lengthening leer, of the approaching encroaching dusk, I mingled my shadow with the growing shadows—surrendered; the clinging loathsome husk. And the wandering cloud faded, blending with the night; The evening star was joined by a host to spangle the heavens with light. Charles A. Loudermilk, Jr. Tee SalReAGV, EER As I journey on this varying Highway of Life, Sometimes stretching forth inviting one to travel; Other times supplying acute bends and rocky surface And huge hills that I must exert all my strength to climb, Often when I travel on the Highway thus I am tempted to halt my journey; Lay down my troublesome load and rest myself. But I have heard stories of men like me I Who yielded to that impulse And who, once off the Highway, were lost in some forlorn forest, And never could resume their journey. S. E. Holland. Under the tutelage of Jess Thomas, the 1946 squad which was made up of 27 freshmen and 5 returning lettermen emerged victorious in but two of eight con- tests played. Assisting Coach Thomas was E. B. Stansbury, head of the physical education depart- ment. The post-war version of the Hill- toppers opened the season by spank- ing a game Austin-Peay eleven, 25-6, in the new municipal stadium at Clarksville, Tenn., on Oct. 4. Sparking the Topper attack was freshman halfback Pat McNeil. A track star named Ray Ramsey passed and skipped through the Western line for repeated gains to help the powerful Bradley Univer- sity Braves scalp the Westerners, Zi-0 sO Oct. l2eat.eoria,s lll It marked the first win in three meet- ings for the Braves over the locals. The undaunted Toppers then re- turned to Bowling Green to turn in their best performance of the sea- son by upsetting a highly-touted University of Louisville eleven, 20- 19, in a real thriller. About 4,000 fans packed the Hilltop stadium to see Dan Ward pitch a touchdown Phillips (back) Diachenko (center) neeenrepetenemmmmmeeemanatt an aN = a Arnold Keys (Center) Underwood (back) Slepovick (back) pass to Jimmy Phillips in the last three minutes of play to turn defeat into victory. The dependable toe of end Tom Montelli, another fresh- man, provided the victory margin. Before 4,500 Homecoming spec- tators on Oct. 25, the Hoppers fell by a 32-20 count before the on- slaught of a star-studded West Michigan grid team. Fullback Jim Marks starred for the invaders while: freshman back Dan Ward again stood out on offense for West- ern. Though the heavy Michigan line was solid as a rock, big Les Dye- house and Co-Captains Dallas Ar- nold and Boots Abell turned in stellar line performances for the Thomas-coached team. In a rough and tumble fracas played at Cookeville, Tenn., a week later, the Red and Grey went down before a big Tennessee Tech fourth quarter to the tune of 32-6. The Ward-Wallheiser aerial battery clicked for the Western tally. Rough tactics marred the entire contest, the officials ejecting several players from the brawl. Morehead’s Eagles broke the Western jinx by piling up a 36-7 win for their initial victory over a Top- per eleven. Joe Lustic, Moreheard fullback, figured prominently in the win over the visiting Westerners. Ward (back) Wallheiser (end) Mills (back) Cullen Eastern’s Maroons waded to a 6-0 (back) verdict over Western under the new $15,000 lighting system at the Hill- top stadium. Paul Moore, Maroon McNeil halfback, skated around right end for the game’s score. The game, (back) a played in a drizzling rain, was fea- | tured by the great play of the West- ql ern forward wall and by the punting F of Harold Murphy, Western full- | back. The bad footing and slippery q pigskin hampered the offensive thrusts of both teams. | Over five thousand fans packed Greenwell the Western stadium on Thanksgiv- (back) | ing Day to witness the Turkey Day Western-Murray clash. West- | ern broke the scoring ice in the first period as Joe Cullen cracked over | from the one. The Breds rallied to Phelps lead, 14-6, at intermission. In the (end, | second half, the Racehorses ran wild to stun the Westerners by the amaz- ing count of 55-6. This was the worst defeat in twenty-two years by a Western grid squad. The punting of Murphy, who averaged 44 yards 1 in eleven boots, and the magnificant | play of seniors Abell and Arnold | were the bright spots of an other- Dyehouse i wise dismal performance. The Hilltoppers, pres- ently rated as one of the nation’s top ten teams also lead in the K. I. A. C. and 8. I. A. A. races and are ranked second in the entire south and south- west. With a wealth of his pre-war stars back, Coach EMBRY GIBSON DAVENPORT SPEARS Diddle’s towel blazed a trail through the east as Western whipped powerful St. Johns in Madison Square Garden before 18,487 spectators. The tow- ering Toppers also kayoed Canisius in Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, and St. Josephs in Philadel- phia on the eastern trip while dropping a 57-46 decison to a red-hot Georgetown University five in Washington, D. C. Big, massive Odie “Sleepy” Spears, junior from Scottsville, dunked in 271 points in the first 18 CAVENAUGH McKINNEY RAY CHAMPION games to lead all point-producers. Chalmers “Cat” Embry, guard from Hartford, has scratched 182 times on the Western scorebook—Embry tallied 410 points last season to rank among the nation’s high scorers. Dee Gibson, clever Cleveland, Tenn., citizen, has racked up 176 points for Coach Diddle’s charges. The colorful Western coach and his able assistant, Ted Hornback, proclaim Gibson the finest defensive ballplayer in the nation! Lanky, Don “Duck” Ray, a fellow Tennesseean MANN GIVENS ATE LABHART . from Madison, has hit the hoop for 174 markers, although he was forced to miss two games because of aninjury. All-American in 1943, Oran McKinney, is back at the pivot and the big Lynnville, Indiana, lad is one of the smoothest ball-handlers in the game today. Johnny Oldham — troubleshooter. That’s what Johnny could be termed since he has done yeoman-like work at all three positions in the 1947 season. The Hartford scrapper has chipped in with 137 points in 18 games. Several members of last year’s nine are back to answer the call to practice this season. With Buddy Keys, Chet Redmon and Odie Spears back to divide pitching chores and Wilson Kirk doing the receiving, Coach Diddle seems | well fortified in battery-men.
