ee Berccoress Western Kentucky State % Se ee eee Teachers College eee ee % Oa Zoreword This is your Talisman ... We have endeavored to capture those things you did and loved most at Western... We’ve tried to catch your m emories so that you might hold them tight ... Through these pages we hope you relive and recapture the joys and sorrows that filled this year. Contents DEDICATION VIEWS ADMINISTRATION CLASSES FEATURES ACTIVITIES PHYSICAL EDUCATION CARDINAL SNAPS Dedication Humbly, but with pride, we dedicate this Talis- man to those men of Western who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II. Their fight is won, but ours is now beginning. Unless we succeed in fulfilling their dreams of an everlasting peace, their sacrifice was in vain. The gold star of Western’s service flag should be an inspiration to us now and in the future. We must dedicate ourselves to the preservation of the liberties for which these men died. Ivan S. I. A. C.. and the S. I. A. A., the Western Hilltoppers started the 1945-1946 cage season with high hopes of retaining the title. With only one regular returning from the 1944-45 squad, uncertainty marked the formation of the new edition of the Red and Gray. Starting with Jim Huter, veteran guard, Coaches Diddle and Hornback added three Service veterans, George Heller, Chalmers Embry, Carroll Brooks, all former Topper per- formers, to the roster. From the welter of relatively inexperienced men, the Western mentors picked Charles Parsley, Maurice Hale, and Bill Kirk as promising performers. With these men as nucleus the Big Red embarked on one of the most grueling schedules ever undertaken by a Western team. That they proved themselves is shown by their record. While emerging the victors in fifteen contests the Red and Grey quint dropped nineteen. Of the losses, seven were by margins of six points or less. Two Hilltoppers, Chalmers Embry and Maurice Hale, ranked among the nation’s high- est scorers as the season ended, and Embry, all-time high scorer for Western, gained a berth on the K. I. A. C. All-Tournament squad. Opening the season on November 9, the Diddlemen swept through the first four games, dropping Smyrna Air Base, the 558th. A.A.F. Base Unit, Southern Baptist Seminary, and the 10th Infantry Unit of Camp Campbell. On November 22 they journeyed to Jefferson- ville, Indiana for the Ohio Valley Tournament. There the Toppers brushed past Miami Univrsity and Marshall before losing a bitter final battle to the Louisville Seacards 45-51. Snapping back to defeat Fort Knox in Owensboro, the Diddlemen slumped badly, dropping eight road games in a row, two each to Naval Air Tech Training Center of Memphis and the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Arkansas; Southern Illinois at Paducah; Mar- shall at Huntington, W. Va.; Ohio U. at Athens; and Wright Field at Dayton. They pulled out of the slump to cop the last pre-holiday game, defeating Miami U. at Oxford, December 17. Hitting the home floor again after Christmas vacation, the Bowling Green boys lost a close one to Evansville College, 40-44 on January 5 before downing the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in Cookeville January 9. On January 12 the Big Blue of DePaul University invaded the Western playhouse, stunning the Hilltoppers 81-43. Next the Eastern Ma- roons dropped the home quintet on the local floor 35-45. Taking the trail again the Wes- terns lost a one-sided battle to the Murray Thoroughbreds on the Purchase floor and gained a victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville. In a burst of brilliant court techniques, the Western men proceeded to annex four con- secutive victories on the home floor, defeating Vand erbilt, Morehead, Marshall, and Tennessee Tech. Tangling with Louisville in Jefferson county Armory on February 2, the Red and Gray came out on the short end of a 51-64 count. They dropped the return match with the Evansville Aces in Evansville on February 6. The biggest thrill of the season came to Western fans on February 9, as the Toppers bombarded the Murray five into submission, 66-41, to even the count for the season. The last three regular games were dropped to Louisville, Eastern, and Morehead. Heading for the K. I. A. C. tourney in Louisville, the Diddlemen drew the Louisville Sea- cards, one of the top-seeded teams in the meet. Despite an early lead and capable per- formances by the locals, the Cards emerged victorious, 50-43. The K. I. A. C. title went to Eastern, by virtue of a win over Louisville in the finals. The S. I. A. A. meet, planned for the home gym March 2-8, was cancelled, leaving the Western Hilltoppers defending tourney champions. Page one hundred twenty-eight GLADYS PERKERSON EK. A.
