L. “Gander” Terry as head football coach at Western when Terry was granted a leave of absence to serve as physical education instructor in the U. S. Army. Assisting “Winky” in coaching the Toppers were Tommy Prothro, former Duke backfield star, and Jimmy Salato, all KIAC quarterback for Western in 1941. Lou Cullen sprinted 91 yards to chalk up the Hilltoppers’ only score as Western dropped the curtain-raiser to the Univer- sity of Mississippi, 39-6, on Sept. 26. Undaunted by this thrash- ing, the Toppers returned home to upset a highly-touted Mar- shall eleven, 19-13, on Oct. 13, with freshman tailback Hard- ing Shelby pacing “Winky’s” offense. On Oct. 19, in a night game at Youngstown, the Toppers were crushed, 40-6, by the Youngstown Penquins’ aerial attack. After pushing the Eagles all over a soggy Western gridiron for three quarters, the Westerners tallied a touchdown and a safety in the final canto to trip Morehead 9-0, before a Dads Day audience, Little All-American Casey Jones ran wild as Union’s Bull- dogs trounced the crippled Toppers, 38-0, a week later. Eastern’s Maroons broke an eighteen-year-old jinx as they ambushed the Bowling Green gridders 18-0, at Richmond on Oct. 31. A Homecoming crowd watched Western battle Tennessee Tech to a standstill on a muddy field with the game end- ing in a 6-6 tie and a fifteen-minute argument over a rulebook technicality. Johnny Mazola, who was sidelined with a leg injury the first seven games, came off the bench to pass the Toppers to a 24-13 victory over Murray’s Thoroughbreds on the latter’s field on Noy. 21, and thus the grid season was successfully term- inated, Tn hg ri i } ee V AR Sale te ar Champions of K. He is regarded by sports writers throughout the south as one of the game’s most colorful figures. To Ed Diddle a towel at a basketball game is what a scorecard is to Connie Mack at a baseball game. No one can remember ever seeing Ed Diddle on a bench at a basketball game without a towel in his hand. His tossing and waving of the towel during the game is as well known as is his record of having smart, speedy basketball teams. He played four years of basketball and football at Centre College. Following his graduation, he be- came coach at Corinth, Kentucky, where during his first year as a high school coach, he led his team to the Kentucky State Championship. His team had a great record in regular play, sailed through the dis- trict tournament, won the regional tournament, and became a sensation in the Kentucky State tourna- ment. Followi ng their winning of the Kentucky Championship, his charges were invited to participate in the National High School tournament held in Chi- cago, Illinois, and from among the 38 teams entered, finished in third place.
