A POEM FOR THE CLASS OF 1931 Quietly we walk among you And look at you And listen to your chatter You with the placid face, You with the gracious ways, You with the lean, skillful fingers You with the contagious giggle. Today most of you are serious As you look toward the purple margm of the Future There are dreams in the eyes of some of you Dreams that will make you eager For each tomorrow to come. Always you have travelled. Each day you have stepped across the threshold Of a strange country. Today you are more aware of the archway That leads to new lands. Each of you will travel a different road. You and you Will climb the rocky crags And reach a high plateau, And then, seeing a yet higher country, Will climb again. You and you and you, Though your wistful eyes are always on the peaks, Will. walk in the valley, Doing needful things. Injust a little while you will he gone, We shall not see you tomorrow Nor yet the day after, But some day we shall see you. Some of your eyes will shine with achievement. We shall like best the eyes that still hold dreams.
