3-'jr'r1, ,nn K L, ' In addition to these shops, the simple mechanics and wood, three others are maintained--general metal, printing, and mechanical drawing. The work in the printing shop is very popular. Name-cards, stationery, tickets, posters, banners, ballots, and campaign material for the school elections, the school paper are among the interesting projects of this shop. The annual is the big event of the year in the printing department. The metal work consists of training in cutting, forming, joining of various kinds of metals. Tool making and elementary machine shop practice is given to advanced students. A most interesting course in art metal work is offered as a club activity. The mechanical drawing is very popular with the students, especially among those expecting to enter a technical higher school. The work in this shop involves the drawing of a simple plate of lines to that of machine parts and simple architectural plans. i

In the earlier period of our national development man- ufacturing Was clone in the home and a child had opportunity to observe the work of his parents or his older brothers, and thus absorb the means and methods of Work. In the present stage of production on a large scale, everything is so highly specialized that the 'young worker does not even have the opportunity of seeing what is taking place in other parts of the plant in which he works. The school, therefore faces the problem of giving as broad a knowledge of industry and occupations as is possible with the facilities and equipment available. In the Western Junior High School the activities in the manual arts provide opportunity for a Wide range of exploration in the field of indus- trial subjects. That inner urge to manipulate has been adequately provided for in these activities, which Will establish useful habits, develop right attitudes and definitely strengthen the thought processes. Shop work taught from the standpoint of explorationand guidance is the best method yet devised to find out whether or not students are likely to show special interest and abilities in the types of work sampled. In the simple mechanics shop training is given in the use of tools and methods employed in the repair of many types of home furnishings and appliances such as plumbing, furniture, sharpening of tools and cutlery, sold- ering of tin anditgraniteware, glazing and shoe repairing. Special attention is given to the repair of electrial appliances and bell wiring. The woodwork provides training in elementary types of construction, tool processes as related to the Woodworking industries. Related informa- tion is gathered and discussed so as to give definite occupational and educational guidance values to the Work. The projects made range from the simplest puzzle or game to the more complicated types of joinery. Cabinets, tables, tea wagons, cedar chests, and scenery are some of the things made by the boys in this shop.
