Q 4 35 Languages urge historical study Studying a foreign language helps a student to understand his own lan- guage better, stated the four language department heads, Mrs. Jean Michaels, Miss Sandra Trifilio, Miss Marlene Souders, and Mr. William Shackelford. Latin classes read Cicero, Caesar, Plautus, and Terrence this year. Latin provides valuable historical study. commented Mrs. Michaels, Latin teacher. This year there was a combined class of Latin IV and Latin V. Mrs. Michaels said that this type of arrangement permitted less time for each group and that neither students nor teacher liked it. An advanced placement course in French was offered this year. Students made an in-depth study of certain French masterpieces. Other French students studied the French conversa- tional language. French helps to de- velop a personis cultural interests. It also helps a person understand a different culture better, stated Miss Trifilio, French teacher. Mr. William Shackelford, German teacher stated, The language lab is valuable because it gives the teacher a chance to evaluate students individu- ally while the others practice. There was a new German class this year- German V. It is mostly independent study, stated Shackelford. Spanish classes emphasized the understanding of life. not only in Spain but also in America, stated Miss Souders. Spanish teacher. Spanish III and IV classes study the history and culture of Spain. When given a free practice period, each student can work to improve in his weakest areaft stated Mrs. Beverly Driskell, business teacher. The blocks provide clerical training for girls who plan a career in business. Girls taking.-Secretarial practice used dictaphones this year. This is the lat- est office equipment for a secretary, stated Mrs. Iustine Nester, secretarial practice teacher. With a dictaphone the boss can dictate at his leisure and the secretary can transcribe at her leisure. Girls who took this course and transcribed three letters in one half hour with no errors were given a Certificate of Proficiency. Office Practice combined experience in typing and filing, while Office Machines provided instruction on the adding machine, copy machine, and rnimeograph machine. ocodernic 29
