al VIGTURIES SPUP. MDP-.ALE The sports program at Western Hills has been a success, overall. Nineteen PHSL champion- ships have been won over the past nine years. However, the titles have not been evenly divided among the different teams. West High has consistently failed in some sports and con- sistently excelled in others. The football team, an annual failure, saw a new coaching staff take over for the 1970 season. Assistant Coach Greisser feels that therenare more disttractions or outside interests to keep people from sports at West High than at Harrison. Greisser also noted that the major problem with the football team was lack of team unity. All the kids don't know each other, he said. This year we tried to build a feeling of unity and team feeling. Greisser felt that the staff had partially suc- ceeded in the attempt to create team spirit. The 1970 football team won three games, which was West High's best season since 1964. When you look at West High compared to the top schools in the state, sport-wise and academic- wise, West High has the potential to be one of the top, stated Ioe Lucas. l have found that West High has the material, but isn't getting the participation. Other activities draw them away from sports, he added. Except for football, however, the pattern con- tinues. West High wins in swimming and base- ball: loses elsewhere. opening I3

vt2 ?tl WHHS, AREA CUUPBRATE The Western Hills community is more involved with the school than most Public High School communities. Principal Sutton compared the West High - community relationship to that of a suburban high school-community relationship. l would say that in our area our school is more involved in community projects than the com- munity is involved in school projects, said Michaels. The students help in tutoring cultur- ally deprived children and have given services to help cut down on the traffic problem created by a school our size. Our community makes unity in our student body hard, because it is varied so much socially and economically, stated Phil Breen. Breen added that there is a large gap between the community and the high school. opening 15
