Office and business courses increase future job After graduation, students turned to the business world and found more jobs open to them as a result of high school office and business training. Typing and shorthand electives teach students the fundamentals of secretarial work and increase work- ing speed and efficiency as the year progresses. Future secretaries learn to operate and maintain mimeograph machines, dictaphones and copying machines. Basic techniques of telephone answering and courteous treatment of clientele are discussed and practiced. Accounting and bookkeeping classes set up accounts, prepare balance sheets and keep other financial records of imaginary companies. Working students receive valuable experience and possibly school credit from part-time jobs. A lim- ited number of jobs are also given to chosen girls in the main and counseling offices.

Science and math reflect technical era With each new technological advancement, high school students become increasingly aware of the importance of science and mathematics. Chemistry students write formulas and conduct sometimes fatal experiments. Physics deals with uses of mechanics, heat, sound, and electricity. Biology classes study both animal and plant life, while zoology deals strictly with animals, and botany with plants. Physiology students memorize the structures, names and func- tions of human organs and bones. Consumer math classes study finances for future careers and examine banking operations firsthand on a tour of a large national bank. Advanced stu- dents studying calculus can, at some colleges, re- ceive freshman math credit upon passing an achieve- ment test. Algebra and geometry classes challenge a student's reasoning and thinking ability. 27 .4
