li f 5, .as- 'll Majorettes add color and spirit to sport events We need each one of you in the cheering section. lf we can't win a game, at least we can still have pride and spirit at West High, states the group's constitution. We hope to swell the ranks with even more maroon sweaters-filled with girls of course!-next year, laughed lVlrs. Holtegel as she spoke of the group's future plans. An all-rookie IVIAJORETTE squad led by veteran Sandy Franks went on, despite handicaps, to provide enter- tainment and interest to athletic events. Practice sessions every lVlonday night proved somewhat unusual. For instance, one cold, snowy night, the girls ended up practicing in Sandy's home. Well, there were seven girls in my living room twirling batons. well . . . what more can I say? Unusual band names and elections characterized this year's CANTEENS at West High. The Naked Water- melon, The Sadistic Salt Shaker, and The Hog were just a few ex- amples of the names appearing on posters publicizing canteens. GAA sponsored their annual lVlr. Contest, balloons, hard rock enliven canteens Above: Mr. Western Hills, Julio Abanto, dances with Linda Wuerdeman, his GAA sponsor. 30 student life Hills canteen in January. From can- didates Mark Muhlhauser, Jim Berg- hausen, Gregg Huffman, Greg Beall, Tom Gardner, and Tom Chapman, Julio Abanto was voted the honorary title. At Student Council's Basketball Oueen canteen, held several weeks later, students elected Sue Meier queen from a list of girls, including Cathi Fopma, Sandy Phelps, April Waller, and Bev Hauck. lt was a thrill and an honor. l was really shocked! replied Sue when asked what her re- action to her election was. The concluding canteen, following the Hi-Y faculty basketball game played to raise money for the stadium fund, was held in March. The Ugly Man canteen finished off the season with a touch of humor. Willing candidates wore unusual costumes and presented skits in an effort to prove themselves worthy of the title. The purpose of canteens was to offer students the opportunity to get to- gether and dance, or enjoy the music in any way in which they felt inclined to. Bands changed, elections changed, and decorations changed from canteen to canteen, but the desire to get to- gether with friends and experience the music still brought students each time. The fact that is most shocking about lContinuedl Right: Students differ in their responses to the beat of the music.
