Audience assumes role of jurors Student life at West High offered an almost limitless variety of activities and experiences to discover light and truth. Although the succession of special and everyday events seemed hardly profound, a student could en- counter all elements in the search for light and truth. You are to determine whether the defendent is guilty of the murder of Bjorn Faulkner and her fate rests in your hands. . . Thus Judge Heath instructed the jury for the drama de- partment's fall production of The Night of January 76. The play, .a portrayal of a court case, . . .deals with realistic situations and people, stated Fred Bram, president of Na- tional Thespians at West High. Karen Andre, the central character, is being tried for the murder of her em- ployer, Bjorn Faulkner, the president of a huge corporation. Bjorn Faulk- ner, the ruthless financier, could have been murdered by a number of char- acters -by his wife, Nancy Lee Faulk- ner, her father, John G. Whitfield, a suspected accomplice in Faulkner's swindles, by Larry Regan, a notorious ganster, who rushes into the court- room unexpectedly and is obviously infatuated with Karen, or even by his own hand. lContinuedl .vfh W. . , . ..,., ,, in court drama V X g Q ' , as ff H . at homecoming The play employs unusual conven- tions, such as the selection of jurors and the entrance of witnesses from the audience. lVlrs. Nlumma, drama director, commented The audience is actually the jury not only on stage, but in the audience. lt tests the audience's sense of values in making their decision of Karen Andre's guilt or innocence. Overcoming the prob- lems of two parts spoken in Swedish accents, building new stage sets, a rookie stage crew, and the memori- zation of two endings depending on the jury's verdict, lVlrs. Nlumma con- cluded l'm very pleased. If I had it to do over again, l'd do it the same. iContinuedl When l get excilecl l Trip over Things, Q qc' I4 .xv x student life 23
