,'Zadca 712 14 With the increased emphasis being placed on physical fitness due to the national emergency our instructors of physical education hope to make future generations strong not only for war but for peace as well. ln spite of emphasis on practical phases, education for living cannot neglect the arts. The music and art faculty members, pictured on these pages with the gym instructors, devote their time to cultivating the esthetic interests and appreciations of our young people. ln the circle on the opposite page Misses l-lazel Burk, Christine Steinmetz and Con- stance Witte, girls athletic teachers, share a drinking fountain. Directly below, Mr. William Marshall explains a principle of art to members of his class. The picture at the top right shows Mr. Arch McCartney, director of boys' athletics, at work in the gym office. Immediately below, Mr. Chester Thomas is also shown as his desk. Mr. Paul Nohr is seen working with a class in swimming. On the next page Mr. Willis Beckett examines a score which he is planning to use with the A Cappella Choir. The picture at the right shows Miss Marguerite Davis, teacher of arts and crafts, helping a student to prepare the material for her project. ln the lower left corner Miss lrene Blasch is seen mixing paints for the use of her classes. This paint may see many parts of the country for pupils of Miss Blasch have won numerous prizes in state and national poster contests. The picture below shows Mr. Charles F. Stokes, teacher of instru- mental music, instructing a student in the proper position for playing the violin. Mr. Stokes is the conductor of the orchestra and the band.
