This first instinctive resentment of power, of supervision of any kind, is dangerous in that in later years it may develop, unless over- come, into a definite anti-government, anti-authority, and even anti-social altitude. The relationship which exists between the student body and the tidiniriistrative office of a school is, therefore, important because in that re- lationship lies the germ of the latter attitude. Harmony between these two groups is essential not only for the proper functioning of the school but in order that a sane rational attitude may be developed among the citizens of the future. lt has been found that representative student government best achieves this purpose. Students cooperate more willingly in studenteplanned and originated activities and programs. Cutstanding pupils receive training in leadership. Cfficials are better able to ascertain the wishes and needs of the student body. ln the above picture the officers of Student Council: laneth Brinkrnan, vice-president, Martin Zimovireasurery lean l-lettrick, secretaryg and Eugene Ruehlmann, president, discuss the promotion of the Victory Corps with Mr. C. Q. Tower, assistant-principal. ln recognition of their outstanding ability these same students were also elected officers of the Senior Class.

Life means relationships, with other people. Education for life must prepare the individual for social living so that these relationships may be as meaningful. as rich and happy as pos- sible. For some the 'development of the social faculties is easy. In the classroom and corridor. at dinner and at club meeting. on the football field and tennis court. at a dance or party. they learn and practice grace and charm. tactland considerateness and the hundred other things that make our complex society possible. For others the adiustment is not so simple. Many need special help and assistance in making their adiustments. Various complexes and fears. lack of confidence. shyness and hyper- sensitiveness. all can be overcome with proper handling and guidance. The student can be encouraged to ioin clubs and participate in extra-curricular activities. his confidence and morale can gradually be bolstered by skillful direction. But whether it be in the simpler sense. merely through contacts. or a more definite. planned effort on the part of teachers or counselor. education must develop this phase of the makeup of the individual.

Every boy and girl must have someone to whom he can go for guidance about courses to be selected, vocation to be prepared for, college to be attended, scholarships available, part- time jobs after school, and the multitude of other guestions and difficulties which arise during a high-school career. At Western Hills Mrs. l-lelen Stauffer, pictured above, and Miss Dorothy Holden, shown on the opposite page with one of her proteges, serve the young people in this capacity.
