i' 'A' 'k I I I I The Western Hills annual staff felt the challenge. They talked with Mr. Ziemer and learned from him personally the contrast between German and American education. They conferred with their principal, Mr. B. H. Siehl, concerning their desire that in this, the most crucial year in all recorded history, their 1943 annual might be not only a record of happy school days but also a visualiza- tion of an ideal. They hoped that in picture and printed word they might carry to the world a message and make a small contribution toward that better age for which so many brave boys are dying. They have tried to show how the American school educates for life rather than for death. They believe that their own Western Hills fulfills this ideal as nearly as any school in the land. Perhaps the concepts presented here are nowhere perfectly achievedy in some instances we may be merely outlining an objective. This in itself is worthwhile. As we define our aims we resolve anew that they shall be accomplished. In each of the sections, Social Contacts, Mental Stimulus, Creative Activity, and Physical Activity we have set forth the contrast between our ideals and those of the Nazis. We dedicate our annual to the preservation of the American way. Page light
