Accepting the challenge set forth in Mr. Ziemer's book, members of the annual staff begin their Work by discussing plans with Mr. B. H. Siehl. Their happy laughter reflected in the gleaming silver service and the buffet mirror, these young people unconsciously symbolize a great ideal of the true education they are seeking to record, harmonious student-teacher, stu- dent-official relationships. With a respect for teachers born of admiration rather than that of fear, students are able to glean the maximum knowledge and under- standing from their school years. The picture on the opposite page is intended to portray one phase of the theme of the Annual of 1943-- Education for Life. The principal of the school meets a group of students at his home to discuss informally matters of interest to the school. Although this scene might be duplicated in hundreds oi high schools in our country, it could never take place in Nazi dominated Europe where 'freedom oi speech' is not tolerated. Page Five Our statesmen have announced their plans for peace, but in deep truth our youth, our future generation, is neither willing nor able to give to the World something more breathtaking, more soul-satisf ying than the doctrine of death as taught by the Nazis. -Gregor Ziemer Education for Death If I had the voice of an angel, and the eloquence of Socrates I could not make it any more clear than this: 'Education for Death' brings death, 'Education for Life' must brinq life. t The education for death that Hitler is preparing for his youth is the most calculating, the most cold- blooded, the most systematic debauchery of youth that the world has ever seen. Our schools are veritable manifestations of paradise in comparison. Our schools are haves, our teachers are exponents oi free wisdom, our equipment is the most elaborate evidence that democracy can and does work. 'Education for Death' subordinates the individual, without elevating the state to any greater height than base selfishness. Education for life must elevate the individual, without making' of him a selfish individualist. We have 'Education for Life' now. Every attempt that we make to improve our methods, to produce a closer cooperation between teacher and student, every effort that we put forth to understand America, improve America, and salvage America, is a step forward in our 'Education for Life'. -+Greqor Ziemer
