What was high school to the 1977 Pioneers? It began with an education, but the life of a Pioneer went far beyond that. The whole adventure of high school emerged from the wonderful words of campus life not found in any textbook. The memories of morn- ing announcements ringing bells, nutrition, lockers, that special boy or girl, the library, clubs and organizations, athletics, Friday nights and Pizza Hut, ASB elections, assemblies, and new friends. The true Pioneer style was captured in it's essence as students joined together to share in the spirit of change at Western, Beginning the year in change with the cut to a five period day, students came from all directions riding the new motorized bicycles called Mopeds. For the Pionneer athletes, 1977 marked a major change from the Sunset League over to the Freeway League. As education also continued to develope with Regional Occupational Pro- grams the growing topic of the day. Then there was perhaps the biggest change to hit Western, the proposal allowing students to smoke on campus. Thus cigarettes were no longer con- cealed weapons and the non-smokers were no longer smoked out of the restrooms. All in all, each of these changes added to the traditional essence of change found at Western, Each was a symbol of a new wave in the Winds of Change. Western Pioneer athletes bonded together to unite in one spirit. 1. The excitement of high school 5, Jeff Reihart making his break, prepares for future oc- 2. The struggle of being a teen upation 3.
