Awakening of a Pioneer

Twenty years ago, in 1957, the birth of West- ern High School became a reality, emerging from Western Junior High. This switch produced new changes in West-hi programs as well as marking the corner of Orange and Western Avenue the new Home of the Pioneers. Each year has brought something new to the ever-changing Western. This year, for example the change came in the reduction to a five period day for the entire first semester, due to lack of district funds. The second semester returned to the traditional six period day. The passing of time has left the 1977 Pioneers standing proudly with a color of vibrant history flavored in pride and tradition. The remem- brance of each changing generation enhances a unique spirit which thrives throughout campus, highlighting Western as a very special school. So it is, each year new Pioneers begin the plunge into the future, yet often their thoughts return to their first experience of Western. The year was just starting out then, but suddenly the days began exploding into weeks as th mo- ments grew into a memory. It was a cool, early September morning which would carry each Pioneer onward through the constantly churn- ing Winds of Change. . .. Q Look in the mirror Buses provided an alternate to dads car

I 1 Western first introduced the life of a Pioneer to the Sophomores. Everything about high school seemed so new, so adventerous, so complex. No longer the confident Freshmen, the new title Sophomore had reduced their statis to zero. Each new Pioneer quickly learned to endure the usual pains and frustrations inflicted by a new school along with the upper classmen. In fact, after a few readjustments and the changing winter winds, the new faces and places became familar and, soon the Sophomores found themselves being absorbed into Western. The opportunities of School involvement were unlimited, the welcoming of new ideas invited. It was the time of discovery. The beginning of that final three year education-high school. Physical participation served as a release, as well as outlit to in- Anticipation volvement 1. Kissing the an old tradition Sophomores learned to respect 2. Lunchtime provided a chance to be with friends 3. Jackie Frost getting ready for a night out 4. Bobbie Kari enjoying his daily plunge. Theme 7
