Asian Awareness was a club designed to increase the interest and knowledge about peoples with various Asian backgrounds and cultures. The members took an active part in several activities throughout the school year, such as the sale of Homecoming balloons during the Homecoming football game and attending the Rich Little TV show at NBC studios in Burbank. The balloon sale may have set a new tradition. The group patronized various Asian restaurants in Orange and Los Angeles counties. Advisor: Ms. Marietta Shigekawa. Decathlon Wins Several Awards Six students competed in the Orange County Decathlon tournament at Costa Mesa High School, at which Chris Barr won his division and was awarded a trip to Sacramento. Mr. Stuart Nielsen, the advisor, accompanied Chris on his one day visit to the state capital. The Decathlon is an annual event lor students who want to compete academically in three divisions honors, scholastic and varsity. M.E.C.H.A. Had Fund, aising Events M.E.C.H.A. this year, under the leadership oftheir advisor Mr. Ventura Cornejo and the club officers Annie Torres, Pres., Spanke Moore, V.Presg Charmaine Grajeda, Sec., and Deegee Calderon, Treas. again held their two annual canned food drives, which netted more than 5300. Had Several Functions The Good News club sponsored the band Bethlehem which performed contemporary Christian music at noon in the student park. Weekly Bible study and prayer groups were conducted by a representative from the Fire Escape, a Christian coffee house. Special meetings were held in the Forum at noon. The group also participated in a Maranatha Festival at Knott's Berry Farm. Several car washes were held for fund raising purposes.
