The excitement that accompanies one of high school's most memorable occasions was reflected upon by the royal court nominees, ladies-in-waiting, alumni, and attending student body. With activities beginning the day before, a pep rally with a special presentation of the club's ladies-in-waiting and royal court promoted enthusiasm for the upcoming game against the Westminister Lions. Then, the traditional homecoming mums were presentedg what would homecoming be without them? The climax was reached with the announcement of this year's queen, Christie Masullo, and royal escort, Steve Nielsen. The halftime festivities then proceeded with the ending marked with the Western band and drill team performing to their utmost and a spectacular of fireworks. It operated as a junior high until 1957 -the year the school pioneered its first major change - and Western became a high school. In the years that followed, other major changes also followed. Western's first football teams were formed, its first bands marched. A football field - christened Handel Stadium - was built, and portable buildings began spotting the campus. The year 1975 saw still another change - the completing ofthe two-year building program. With the completetion of the building program, the Pioneers benefited from a new Media-center library and a new 300-plus seat Forum. TOP-Men working on the inside of the forum. WCStCTH,S Rock sale-a two-year tradition of Westhi-was sponsored by the Thespian Club. The rocks were blue with white ribbon and carried a 'you bug me' message. Western's Key club sponsored the third annual Christmas tree sale in December. Selling the quality trees, Key club turned over all proceeds of the sale to buy new chairs and tables for Westhi's newly-finished Media Center. The carnation sale-sponsored by Girls League -made Valentine's Day special for many Westhi students. For the fifth year, Girls' League delivered carnations to many V anxiously-awaiting students. The year's assembly schedule began with a presentation by a professional actor, posing as a Russian teacher and an advocate ofCommunism. His act included critising the American way of life and capitalism, comparing the two nation's government, and attempting to prove that the Communist system was superior. Those who attended the assembly4convinced that the speaker was actually a Communist-became aroused by his anti'American remarks and openly defied him. At the assembly's conclusion, the speaker revealed his true identity , and order was restored in the Boy's Gym. Western's students later witnessed another interesting showcase of talent at the year's second assembly. The assembly spotlighted on M r. Carter, trampoline and gymnastics expert. Accompanied by his young son and a female assistant, Carter proceeded to display various techniques and stunts on the trampoline. The two, sponsored by Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor, were accepted by the student body and considered by many a popular success. A Cappella-55 The key to every successful student government is student involvement---and that perhaps best describes 'the way it was' at Western. Many organizations -including the Associated Student Body Cabinet, the lnterclub Council, the Student Curriculum and Advisory Committees, and the Student Congress' --encouraged student input in the government of Western High School. Cabinet--which was comprised ofWesthi's I2 elected officers--had the monumental task of balancing the I974-75 ASB budget, arranging for Pep Rallies and assemblies, and were involved in a continuing effort to improve student-faculty relations. ICC-f-whose membership of the executives from Western's various clubs and organizations -worked for student involvement through extra-curricular activitiesvsuch as the planning ofa 50's week to bring back the days of'the way we weref The student Curriculum and Advisory Committees worked independantly ofeach other but for the same common goal-- a better Western. While the SCC studied Western's curriculum and the feasibility of flexible scheduling, the SAC pioneered a Graffiti Wall program on campus to help improve social and ethnic differences at Western, The Student Congress was made-up of representatives selected from the Drivers Education, Health, Government, and History classes. A year when Western nearly doubled its scoring total of the past season, but discounting the forfeit, could only win one game-against Savanna. fa 1-8 recordl WESTEIQN PHC H 5390 5'f?0f74 KQU- fl I SYIZEZ' lu---1-v--..-7 A - - 1.. By all preseason indications Western's Sophomore basketball team could have been a contender for the Sunset League title. The sophs, playing gritty, determined basketball, earned themselves a 5-3 won-loss record in preseason competition. But when the season had ended the sophomores had finished a frustrating, uphill campaign with a 8-14 record. Despite their final record, the sophomores, coached by James Burton, had many inspired players. Lloyd Johnson and Eldon Phillips played exemplary basketball all season long, keeping the sophs in many close games. Bob Sawada and Mike Baoraza steadied the team's play with their consistent, heady style of basketball. Utter futility is a description ofthe Sophomore-JV basketball teams play this past year. Coach Terry Hennigan's legions strived gallantly all throughout the season but came out on the short end ofthe scoreboard too many times for their satisfaction. lt's not that we didn't have a talented team, Coach Hennigan explained, We had talent. It'sjust that the other teams had more talent. Two players on this ill-destined team deserve great plaudits for their efforts. Only six players on the twelve-man team were seniors, and only three ofthese had any water polo experience. Another problem was the revamped Sunset League. In its present form, one good water polo school was dropped from the schedule, but three fine ones were added. Coach Tom Grimm's squad could not overcome these obstacles despite line efforts by Mike Choti and Jim Proffitt. The team was thus relegated to the status ofan also-ran. The l975 edition ofthe Westhi swimming may have been the best the Pioneers ever assembled. The heightened competition in the new Sunset League made it an uphill fight for the swimmers in their quest for the top ofthe standings. Four seniors led coach Tom Grimm's squad into action. Rich Hain, Mike Choti, Bill Samp, and Bob Sumrall formed this quartet swimming the butterfly and 20 meter freestyle, the breast stroke, the 500 freestyle, and the sprints. Rounding the rest of the team's top personnel were twojuniors, Jim Proffitt and Bill Foster, and one sophomore, George Reilly. Profhtt swam the individual medley and the backstroke, Foster the butterfly and freestyle events, and Reilly the backstroke. vi gif, . 'ang ' . Thrown into the Sunset League tennis pit against such perennial giants as Newport Harbor, Western, already plagued by many too-familiar problems, stood no chance. Still, a pinpoint oflight could be seen at the end ofthe tunnel. Tom Brannon, a sophomore, earned a surprising second place on the Pioneer rankings with his strong play. This bodes well for Western in the next two years. Joining Brannon in the top four Pioneer netmen were Bryan King, number one all season, and Oscar Soto and Paul St. Amant, nos. three and four, respectively. CTOP ROW L -Rb: Dave Bradley. It would by fun-seeking at its social events or intrigued at a new recreational sports program. For the most part, however, it was a serious and hardworking group preparing for an competing in various sports events. During the 74-75 school year GAA fielded teams in seven sports. Tennis and volleyball started the year's activities, followed by second semester sports basketball, archery, badminton swimming and softball. Despite a predominant factor throughout GAA - lack ofexperience - most teams made a good showing in both league and tournament play. Taking a time-out from competition GAA planned several social and fund-raising events during the year. GAA's calendar included a pot-luck dinner, several parties and a liquid cleaner sale. Culminating the year's activities was the annual GAA awards banquet held in June. Besides the traditional GAA social and athletic events this year's group experimented with a new program - recreational sports. Replacing previous units in field hockey, recreational sports allowed girls to participate in different sports activities. Bicycling and flag football were favorites of the program. Planning and coordinating all GAA events for the year was GAA advisor, Ms. Sharron Backus. Working in close affiliation with Ms. Backus were the other GAA coaches and the GAA Cabinet officers under the leadership of President Kathy Deakins I l l ' v GAA Intro flst Pg I 97 K E X . iff fl ls IHHONEEP Spam . w ,T lui!! 1 U, .4 ,- viijff- ' bw H, L , -. -'-1 --16 4 ,' QM ifffw ' ' QF' Q L-- r, - ' :?,peTWf'-Fir, .,f. This year's Junior Class showed their pioneer pride and spirit not only by their actions, but also by their rings' motto-The Spirit of'76. This spirit held by the Class of'76 was evident at assemblies, in the classroom, and in their support ofthe school and it's traditions. Under the leadership of president Mike Mattox, vice-president Paul Acosta, secretary Holly Beilman, and treasurer Julie Takaig the Junior class began their second year by selling candy apples at the home football games, and ended it by putting onthe Junior-Senior prom. The rings thejuniors wore depicted the way we were', when the country first began. Western's '76-ers were also at a beginning. A beginning that included a newly remodeled modernized school. For the Juniors, the way we were meant a constant resource oftrue Pioneer pride and enthusiasm. They were being referred to as lowmen on the totem pole. It was this attitude on the part ofthe upperclassmen that aroused this year's sophomore class. The '77-ers proved they hadjust as much spirit as anyone else. Under the successful leadership ofjean Blackwell, presidentg Kim Curtis, vice presidentg Margie Love, secretaryg and Lynn Curtale, treasurerg the sophomores earned the respect ofthejuniors and seniors, by carrying out the traditional Christmastime candy cane sale, and also by participating in the All School Candy Sale.
