A philosopher once wrote that the future of the world rests in the hands of our youth. For some this is a foreboding statement-for others it is encouraging. I tend to take the optimistic point of view. This gen- eration of youngsters is encouraging in its thirst for knowledge and desire to be enlightened in the ways of the world. Best of all, their demphasis on material things and the desire for naturalness and the aes- thetic. What does the world have in store for you? One thing for certain, the world does not owe anyone any- thing. Every one of you will have to make a place for yourselves and pay your own way. Some of you will go on to be great scientists, engineers, scholars, art- ists-laborers, grocery men, gas station operators- the list of possibilities is endless. But whatever you do, do it well. Some of you will go off to war to fight- maybe even die-for your country, others will take the pacifistic point of view and refuse to fight. Whatever your convictions-research them, think them through clearly, analyze every a aspect-and stand firmly upon those convictions. After you graduate and have been away from West- ern for awhile, stop and reflect back on your years here. Hopefully, you will have fond memories of those years. Remember that all of you will always be a Pioneer and you have left a part of yourself here. I hope we have given you a part of us to take with you -something you will remember the rest of your lives. Good luck and may your good judgement guide you in making this a better place for all mankind. Remem- ber, the future of the world rests in your hands. -error Whether a student has planned his future or not, at some point in his high school experiences, he will need the advice of a friend in decision-making. Seeing the necessity of wise advice based on know- ledge, Westhi provided the services of seven counselors. These counselors provided a secure place where students could turn for help. Whether it was a college-minded Senior, or a confused teenager, the counselors were there for one purpose, to listen and to help. They represented genuine guidance for students as they sought answers to the questions in their minds.
