'-:'r.5..iL.4.4,,4..A..:3l Social studies helped the stu- dents to acquire skills, attitudes, and knowledge toward becoming good citizens. Every student at Western was required to take two such courses, American History and Govern- ment, giving the students an in- sight into the American way of life. World History depicted in- ternational' problems, both past and present. Leaf collections in the fall and insect collections in the spring were a part of the requirements for Biology students. This and additional science courses, Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, Life and Physical Science, pro- vided a broad understanding of so fascinating a field. Closely aligned to science were the mathematics courses. Square roots, slide rules, expo- nents, angles, polygons, proofs, and equations became an every- day part of the math pupils' vo- cabulary. A solid foundation in math was necessary to attain a good understanding of other classes. General Math, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Calculus provided these founda- tions. 'fl f .4 .pw 18 25:
