DEDI ATION On November 25, 1964, Adlai Stevenson wrote a beautiful tributary letter thanking the class of 1965 for perpetuating the memory of Eleanor Roosevelt by dedicating the annual to her. And so, when Mr. Stevenson suddenly died this past summer, it seemed fitting and tragically ironic, to leave our book in his commemoration and in his honor. As the United States representative to the United Nations, his noted strength lay in his great wit, his wisdom. and his diplomacy. In a time marked by anti-intellectualism, he became-without willing it-the voice of thought and grace in his own nation and in the world. He said, when speaking of Mrs. Roosevelt, that every one of us can contribute to the everlasting light for a better world and a better America. This is her legacy to mankind and especially, I would say, her legacy to youth -the time, as a poet said, when we dream we can make the world all over new. This too was Adlai Stevenson's legacy, he attempted and succeeded in making his dreams his deeds. We have sanely, calmly, to preserve our strength and our caution, our full defensive might and our ever-readiness to negotiate, our dedication to the cause of allied freedom, and our search for reasonable accommodation. This path is not exciting. It sets no trumpets braying or drums beating. It revolts the ideologists. But this adventure has in it the most precious of all possibilities-that our children and our grand- children may survive to build a saner, better, more law-abid- ing world.
