Our teachers and administrative staff have given us individual guidance, helped us to be independent, taught us to question and to think for ourselves. Even more impor- tant, they have been our friends. We have loved the tradi- tions of our school, and we have aspired to reach its lofty ideals. As an expression of our gratitude, we dedicate our yearbook to Western. The Loyalty Song Let our voices blend together Westernls faculty and students In the praise of Western High, Pledged to work in harmony, Freshman, Sophomore, junior, Senior, To make us worthy leaders Our spirit will not die. Of our community. Your traditions of truth and honor, Her achievements have been proven Of loyalty and right, By her colors Hying high. Are the ideals you have given The red and black waves proudly To each Westernite. Oyer Western High. CHORUS To you, Western High School, We pledge our faith and loyalty, To serve your name in love and honor And to follow your standards faithfully. Fore'er welll remember your motto so true: We've received light, let us give light- A lesson well learned from you. 6 Hpprecriatiotn Who are the four advisers who have guided us through our years at Western? Who will remain close to us in thought as we look back over our stay? We shall remember Miss Hare and Miss Wagner for their fine management of the finances of our Year. We shall always think of Mrs. Ringe and Mrs. Thomas as our friends, for they have given us so much of their time and personal interest. The Class of 1956 expresses sincere apprecia- tion to each of its advisers. ESTHER M. THOMAS RUTH C. HARE LILLIAN C. R. WAGNER 7 MILDRED M. COUGHLIN DEAR Miss COUGHUN, In the past, this page has been reserved for your greetings to the rad ' g uating Class. This year we, too, had looked forward to your message to us. Our yearbook will not be quite complete without it. During our stay at Western you have always considered our interests and enthusias- t. H . . . ica y supported our activities. Now that you are away from school, we miss your friendly hello in the cafeteria, your messages in assembly, and your sound advice and warm companionship. Western is not the same without you. We hope that you will soon be well, and we are looking forward to seeing you on future visits to We SECIII. Sincerely yours, THE CLAss OF 1956 8 DOROTHY C. CAREW Arfiftiznl to the Principal ELSIE M. We poked our noses in each door To see what we could see, We polished up on two times four In hopes of getting E. When first we met our Sister Year Our wonder was untold, They sported smiles from ear to ear And big black eyes that rolled. When Freshman Frolic had arrived We hopped in 'tater sacks, And it's a wonder We survived, The way we wrenched our backs. Each Freshman had a happy face On graduation day, We sat in our appointed place In colors bright and gay. Then Old Man Winter brought us snow, Which came on Sophomore Day, It dealt the actors quite a blow And kept our guests away. In Western's gym, filled to the brim With hay and straw and grass, Each Sophomore changed from her to And thrilled the Senior Class. Next fall we came with anxious looks Downtown to Western High, Where multicolored were the nooks That greeted every eye. Carnations gold, with ribbons black, Pleased all the Junior Year. In velvet seats We all sat back, The Clipper Choir was here. The Junior-Freshman Party came, We welcomed Fifty-eight, And when they won the baseball game, We thought that they were great. 38 him Upon one rainy night in May Each junior and her date In formal dress, with spirits gay, Waltzed till the hour grew late. Our Revel didn't have a fault, For every class there came Queer creatures, like a box of salt, And no one looked the same. We went aboard the ship Bay Belle, Then hurried to the top, As waves around us rose and fell, We did the hula hop. On Senior Day we all were thrilled, At last there were no showers! And every parentls heart was filled With pride that equaled ours. 'Neath streamers and balloons at play, We had our Senior Swirl. To jitterbugs and waltzes gay, Each escort whirled his girl. We found that when it rained, it poured With work for Westward H 0! Each Gregg award and college board Kept Seniors on the go. Our farewell day was sad, it's true- We'd miss dear Western High, But there would be experience new In place of days gone by. Our years of high school were complete On graduation night. Although we knew of tasks we'd meet, The road ahead looked bright. The next night saw us banqueting, And couldn't you just guess- We hardly tasted anything, But glowed with happiness. We held our prom from nine till one, The final night of spring, And when a special dance was done, Each Senior turned her ring. 39 X. gy?
