STP Q- 'i X-4 2751 I f J HE memories of our high school days will always be with us, because we have found at Western such satisfaction and happiness. In our studies we have been taught to work honestly, to think intelligently, and to deal fairly with each other. We have been impressed with the importance of co-operation in outside activities as well as in the classroom, and we have shared the zest and enthusiasm of other girls who have been a part of Western. We have cherished the beauty of our school-the reds and yellows of the trees in autumn, the campus blanketed in snow, the blossoms on the cherry trees in spring. Through the years we have made many friendships which have been strengthened by the common bond of love for a school. As an expression of our love and gratitude we, the Class of 1949, dedicate our yearbook to Western. V 0 i- I 71 Appreciation For her interest and untiring efforts to make our class one of the best, we express appreciation to Miss Dorothy Carew. We also thank Miss Grace Reed for her eflicient assistance as treasurer during our Sophomore and Junior years. We shall always remem- ber our advisers for their guidance, help, and friendship. DOROTHY CAREW e 'w -J T0 Membery of the Clam of 1949: As your graduation from high school approaches, all of you will look back over the years you spent at Western High School with some feeling of pride and accomplishment. You have achieved the first step in your ladder of success, and it is my hope that each of you will find the next step one of equal advancement. The outside world in which you will now take a larger part and for which you will assume greater responsibility, needs your enthusiasm and idealism. Amid the pressures of adult life may you always remember to hold fast to that which is good. 1 PRINCIPAL ELSIE M. WITTERS Vice-Prifzcijml ELSA C. HAUPT Vice-Principal JEAN B. The awed expressions of Westernites were explained by the presence of City's school band. The concert given by the boys was enjoyable, and it also gave us the opportunity to be recognized as full-Hedged juniors. Our next affair, the junior Tea Dance, through the capable supervision of Miss Ritter, our adviser, and the whole-hearted co-operation of all the girls, was a great success. The Holly Hop, as the dance was called, brought boys from City and Poly to help us spend a delightful afternoon dancing to the music of the Downbeats. Of course, we couldtft forget our sister year, the Class of '52, who were just timid Freshies when we gave them a welcome party. The entertainment was provided by our own class, who took the girls on a Tour of New Yorkf, The night of the Junior Prom was a memorable one. We shall never forget the wonderful time we had dancing to Carl Hamilton's orchestra. Somehow we could not help feeling a little sorry that this year was almost at an end, for there was only one more event to complete our Junior memory book-an excursion down the bay with the Seniors as our guests. Now as we look back upon our junior year-the fun we have had, the work we have accomplished, the friends we have made-we feel that we have become a true part of Western. 50 OFFICERS OF THE CLASS OF 1951 Prericieuz JOYCE BROWN Vice-Preririent Secretary MAR JORIE WILLARD FRANCES KLISHIS Tremwer DOROTHY MANNING Dear Sister Class of '49, Not so long ago, we, the Class of 1951, entered a new and rather frightening life at Western. But with your help, we were soon able to overcome all our fears. This was made evident in our first pro- duction, the Freshman Frolic, which we had in june. In the fall, Sophomore Day proved us to be a strong, united class. How proud we were as we sang our year song for the first time! However, the most thrilling experience in our Sophomore year was giving Say It with Music for your enjoyment. We presented this to you in the hope of showing our appreciation for all you had done for us. When you have left Western, we are sure that you will carry on the high standards which you have already set for yourselves. We wish you the best of luck as you enter into your chosen careers. May you be just as successful in the future as you have been in the past. Gratefully, ,51 51 For it'5 ttluftzyf fair 'weather When good fellowf get together. RICHARD HOVEY 1 1 f 1 V QV . f Ayn. Keep this book with loving care, For its pages once were bare, Once these pictures were not here, Once this was no souvenir. We, the staff of WESTWARD Ho!, Worked till there was this to show. Now our heads are bent and gray, We're no longer bright and gay. The book is writ in blood, we think, For now our veins have printer's ink. 87 Heirs Class Song Through the years we'll all remember our dear Western High, We will carry on tradition as the years go by, '49's great hope is that your name will never dieg We will praise you forever, Western High! '49 of Western High School, let your banners fly, Let maroon and let the gold stand out against the sky, In our studies, in our pleasures, we will strive to shine, We will raise the name of Western's '49! Dear Western Dear Western, we greet thee with songs of thy praise And with hopes that unchanged may be, That forever in safety each ship thou wilt guide O'er the tempest of destiny's sea. May thy colors for aye wave proudly on high, May thy name e'er be linked unto fame, For we've loved thee, now love thee, and and ever shall love, And ever shall honor thy name. 88 Q nv P K ,Y SV sf,N.., My ,V x ' X vp uf 1 Qtcwffj' - .. .
