It will be taken out in the years to come in some quiet hour when thoughts turn backward. We shall remember Mrs. North and Miss jones, who have always found time for our plans and our problems and have guided and encouraged us in our achievements. To these two, who have been the friends of all of us, we, the class of 1947. gratefully dedi- cate our book. MIRIAM E. JONES To lbe Clam of 1947: With the publication of this u'76,ff1Ud7 d Hof, the Class of 1947 leaves Western High School an attractive record of undergraduate years. The time spent by you in school has slipped away far too quickly, and I shall miss your initiative, your cooperation, and your adaptability. Your class has been a clever group with real ability in many different fields. May you continue to enjoy success and happiness in college, in business, and, later, in your own homes. In one corner of the room Naomi Bassan studies a French coin just A added to her collection while Shirley Cisenfeld tells about a new foreign . doll she has received. Hearing music, we turn to find Sylvia Milhiser, if '.': ,Amr who Usually Sings to Occupy herself As Time Goes By. Sylvia quietly I , hums as she uramblesu through her geography book. Just then, Mildred T '.'A gg Potts comes in from her daily jaunt to the library. If Mildred's dream 15222 of becoming a librarian is realized, Miss Horsey may one day find herself 5 without a job. Directly behind her, Dolores Baumgardner enters with . ..i1 fi --,i'i ti' Audrey East. Dolores fails to bowl,' over Audrey with her latest school ringg for Audrey is too interested buckling on one of her collection of handsome sports,' belts. They settle themselves next to Virginia Way, who is intently reading-not, it seams, a textbook, but a recipe for Ginger s-naps. Say, there's somebody with an engaging personality. Sigrid Schwarz would like to Pat-ent a microscope to read her own writing. Near-by, we see Margaret Marks Peg-ging away at her homework and removing those tortoise rimmed glasses every two seconds in order not to miss anything going on around her. Peggy is distracted a moment by the commotion caused by Pat Nairn, who wears bangles and bands and showers her conversations with Wilde gestures. Jayne Schneider won't be outdone, however, and vividly demonstrates her interest in the Big Seven, Spivak and-Stella. Sitting a short distance away, Margie Klepper paints a pretty picture as she jokes with Bette Matthews, who is nursing a pair of dance-worn feet. Just then, Janie Ward, a model student, comes bursting in to announce the wonderful news that she will probably be featured in the next dance recital of the Recreation Group of Baltimore. In her excitement Janie runs into Betty Lou Mariner, who is flying out the door, North-ward bound, to in-choir about business college. There appears to be a test in the air, for sweet Peggy Taylor is seen banking on her knowledge of the Norman Invasion to help her in history. Also interested in history is Rozella Otndorfif, whose man- dates will be doubled if she becomes a foreign correspondent. Chemistry, too, is holding its own, as Mickie tells us she is none the Weise after not studying hers last night, for she went to the boxing matches instead. Across the room Adele Imber dili-gently combs her memory book for a program she has lost. Shirley Finch brushes', past, talking about flower arrangements as she goes. Reaching her desk, she asks about Betsy Blocher, a Rhapsody in Blue,', who pictures Les-s fun when work on Westward Ho! is done, to Seay if she can find Anna at one of her meetings. She adds, Anna puts her whole he-art into year 'activities' Dorothy Shilmover, Dot-ing on beautiful penmanship and lettering, puts her stamp', of approval on the book cover of the novel she's reading. However, that tiny tornado, Rita Surosky, debates the difference between the black and white in the design, while the popular-ity records of the book interest Ro-salie Cohen. Esther Kristman casually enters 310 at this moment, armed with gym shoes and a poetry book, thus showing her interest in tennis and Tennyson. She strolls over to Esther Wolpert, who has been spending the few remaining minutes before school reading up on nutritious lunches. Still out of breath from blowing that big French horn, Katherine Hoffman enters the room just as the nine o'clock bell rings. The chatter of the class stops for opening exercises. Just as everyone is sitting down again, talkative Tziporah Goodman whispers to June Downs that she will be Zip-ping off to college in New York to become one of the Little Women, since she has now finished with Little Men. June Downs the virtues of fickle and boasting males and steadily hopes for a faithful swain. Across the aisle, Nancy Helms thinks of all the doctors she will be meeting. On the other side of the room, Doris Young, full of novel ideas about French and fiction, asks Marie Rehmann what the scrap of paper in her notebook is. Marie hesitates to let Doris Re-ad her original poems, but glee-fully talks of her interest in music. 46 The bell for the first period rings, and as she leaves the room, Selma Mervis, her Dark Eyes dancing at the memory, murmurs, Gee, I met the cutest boy at the U. S .O. last night! But she is interrupted by jane Kuhn's vocal efforts. jane, who can't carry a tune, but is Always trying, attempts to draw Hilda Feld into the song. Hilda blushes and laughingly says, Not me! Everyone in Dml seems to be in a merry mood this morning, for Sylvia Wilner smiles as she plays on Gwen Barron's good nature by teasing her about being the last to leave the room. Finally the class is gone, giving Mrs. Ossermann a few hours of peace before they are all back again at two-thirty. Dm? As the eight-fifty-eight bell rings for silence,'there is the hurried click of sling back pumps as Terry Michaelson trips', down the aisle of the auditorium, just in time for the year meeting. Following close behind, Leah Hoffman, thinking of last night's date, murmurs, Hes such a nice boy! As she settles herself, Shirley Freedman smiles at Leah and jokingly asks, Is he tall? Esther Herman, late-ly fashion editor of the Rigarmarole, and an enthusiastic Vagabond, acts as if she had something to say, but there goes the nine o'clock bell. After the opening exercises, attr-active Joyce Armacost announces a forthcoming dance. Besides being noted and liked for her collective charms, Joyce is a hockey fan and n-ice skater. Following her announce- ment, La Vern Resch and Dolores Pinchard report on the current Vocal ventures of the Glee Club. La Vern is nursing along her voice for a rehearsal while Dolores notes her progress. A mention of a Civil Air Patrol meeting reminds Janet Bennum of her dreams of flying through this term of chemistry with no Tuesday night homework. However, blonde, blue-eyed Shirley Anders smiles at this fantasy and continues to harbor thoughts of becoming a foreign correspondent. Kiddo, says Pat Connor, blushing, nothing can compare to 'Marinei life! Their attention is drawn to the stage by Thelma and Catherine Hasloop, who have twin billing in the entertainment. Thelma winks at Evelyn in the second row. jeepers! her friend thinks. This dance is certainly different from the one I went to last K-night. At the other end of the row, Elaine Zachar murmurs, Um-m-m to Verna Bitzer's talk of chocolate nut sundaes and football games. Sitting next to Elaine is Edith Keller, whose sm-art-ness will surely be helpful to her in any office after graduation. A little farther away, Irene Lustman, short and sweet, listens appreciatively to Betty Ann Ziegler, who is trying to find a recipe to cure fun-loving Betty Burton's fickleness. However, Edna Gorsuch asks only that her friends Leave Her to Heaven at the roller rink. As the next feature of the entertainment begins, Evelyn Henneman and Jane Brohawn are finishing their discussion of the short dresses jane saw at a recent Mr. St. joe dance. It's immaterial to me, says Doris Dill. Bobby McGraw leans across to her friends to talk about a ch-art for her Sunday school pupils. Golly! exclaims Pat Holden, I think it re-choirs some horses to make it interesting. Sitting next to her is Mary Mauro, who has been showing Pat some snapshots taken while Mary was living in New York. Meanwhile Wandalee is Baer-ing up under the strain of looking for crochet thread on Charles Street, and at intervals, jean Hoffmaster, in her businesslike way, has been keeping vivacious Dorothy Harvey posted on the latest news of the roller rink. The class stands to sing its year song, and the meeting is then adjourned. As the girls walk up the aisle, Dot Rawlings proudly shows her W's to Mary Killikin, who is jo-king with Catherine Booth about their recent bowling scores. Catherine laughs at the memory, but quickly stops, for the year meeting is over, and the first period has begun. 47 Dm3 Let's suppose that Dm3 has had a farewell party in the cafeteria one Y evening. If a famous columnist had been present, he would probably 'b have reported to his fans: Q9 X' ,S X lt's a door for Yvonne Kormann's room and curtains, for the men a ,O EJ in her life! X f , f Lottie Hornstein, whose likes range from banana splits to knobby , ,Q , X, knits, looks cuter than ever tonight. O' f fffy Among the first to arrive was Gertrude Small, who got here in X - ' f f record time. She really must have been Racing with the Moon. X Z f Rosalie Sirkis's only sport this past year has seemed to be catching C 44 K colds. She certainly believes that the play's the thing. ff' Friendly Gloria Perlberg dotes on little sister's fairy tales, yet con- stantly worries about Russo-American relations. Kitty Rutter essays, short stories. Perhaps some day one of them will be as popular as Kitty. If it's funny tell it to Ruthie Lustbader. If it isn't funny, she'll laugh anyhow. Peggy Shores has the guests at the party line up to receive their favors. Rose Marie Corriere has had experience-on refreshment committees, that is. She is really being kept busy. Ann Allan and Elaine Bondy are a great help to her, though. Ann certainly looks cheerful in a bright plaid of her native Scotland, and Elaine is just the type to 'iserve well on any committee. What causes Gertrude Creeger to dash into the cafeteria late as usual? Has she been dreaming overtime of being a medical stenographer? jan jefferson appears in an ice blue dress. She is carrying a dish of homemade pastries, which Rosalie Retz immediately proceeds to tackle.', Typing or talking, Zenia Kobernick is the flower of her class. Mary Louise Woerner is engaged in a conversation with Betty Wareheim, who is well known for her steady marking of shorthand papers before school. We're having a hard time getting Doris Miller to answer our queries. Like her clothes, her con- versation is not too frilly.U Hazel Hennemann told us she was planning a visit to Culver Military Academy. What's the attraction, Hazel? Angelin Nicholas has an honest to goodnessn desire to continue her work in photography upon returning to Greece. Is it true that instead of a dent, Vivian Mile's car now sports a dimple to match her own? Could Ann Lee be hoarding that chocolate ice cream for Sonny Boy ? We wonder if that is a calorie book we see Anna Levin consulting before she takes a second piece of cake. Elaine Oberfeld is passing the potato chips as well as transcription. This class treasurer is never in the redf' We've also found out that Barbara Lee Sweig's interest in marine life isn't at all ufishyf' It's a mystery', to us how Marian Hughes pronounces her nickname. Sarah Feldman, whose unusual laugh has given her the nickname The Giggle, is still chuckling over Charlotte Fishman's embarrassing predicament. Charlotte has been looking into all the closets and book rooms to see if she has accidentally locked another teacher in one of them. Oh murder! exclaims Virginia Adams, who has late-ly started a collection of match boxes and perfume bottles. Norine Sullivan, Dm5's letter girl, hasn't stopped talking this evening. Can it BU that vegetables provide a great many more vitamins than does meat? We predict a brilliant future in singing for Etta Rea Fishbein, whose natural claim to artistic fame has made her rhyme with everything that's musical. Charlotte Williams's presence is immediately known when the subject of conversation changes to Hollywood. We wonder why. ' Jeannette Shatzer is sitting just about a whole layer of paint away from a plate of egg salad sand- wiches. Can that possibly account for the fact that there are none left? 48 june Paris is just swimming in pride tonight over her winged victory. Well, it's like this, answers Lotta Bendorf when asked if she has ben a member of the Pioneer Women's Club very long. Having seen Janet Rampley's beautiful blue eyes and long, black lashes, we now wish that we too were lucky enough to have them. Oh well- To Each His Own. Upon meeting Eleanor Austlander, we immediately type her as a natural comedienne. We don't know how it started, but there is talk that Jeannette Levin treasures her miniature collection. Betty Lee Elliott is having difliculty eating her pickles and ice cream and trying to keep the books straight at the same time. Dashing in late as usual is Ruth Hesekiel, our amiable pioneer girl. Rosalie Caplan, instead of making her usual speeches for money, pictures her future at Staten Island. Y is Marguerite Berger laughing so much? Is it because one of her favorite football teams has won a game? We think that Patsy Miller is blowing the warning whistle rather soon and wonder if she has an early engagement. , . . . . d We'l1 have to be on our way now, but we ve enjoyed every minute of reporting this party. Goo night and good luck! xv' X D519 Room 16 is empty except for a studious student studying. Margaret Gorsuch enters, drops her books on her desk, and exclaims, Oh, jean, I saw the most excruciatingly wonderful movie last night! It was about a handsome intern named Ed, who was in love with a girl medic. jean Smith's only comment is a disgusted look, which deepens as Margaret gets out her lipstick and hairbrush and departs for before-school repairs. Catherine Carr catches the remaining echoes of the look as she enters from orchestra rehearsal. What's the matter, Jean? asks capable Kitty. Margaret was talking about some mushy movie. Now what do you have against movies, Jean? Why, I saw an excell- ent intellectual one last week. It probably had love in it, Jean says resignedly. Naturally, laughs Kitty, and it wasn't one of your old westerns either. It told the story of the United Nations. A delightful giggle is heard, and the girls see Vera Mendelsohn entering. Speaking of movies,', Vera says, the last one I saw was ages ago! It was about a brilliant student of 1847 who always helped her friends in math and Latin. She went out West and was caught in the middle of an Indian war. It was horrible! People were scalped and burned at the stake! Now that sounds more like a good movie! exclaims Jean. Oh, Jeanie, says Vera, how we love to tease you! I-Iumph, grunts Jean. 49 D1 Now peep into a kaleidoscope, the one with the sound track, and try to bring into View the multi-colored characteristics of the members of D1. Look! There in the center is Jane Adair rushing from school to get to the Pratt Library on time. But donit think she's going there to read! 1 No, jane is interested only in working in the Department of Frank Opin- ions about the U. S. Navy. . . . When the 'scope is twisted again, Cleo Athas is heard saying, I just got back from York last night. Cleo was again serenading her home town with Greek melodies. . . . The next figure is rather tall. Of course, it's Lu Bell and she's talking about Becky, her big sister, who knows all about yearbooks too. Lu is in a dither about going to Goucher and the thousand and one other places she's always running to. . . . The shape of the next design seems rather bulky. Why it's B and B, Cookie Berman and her associate, Gladys Belsinger. Gladys is trying to write-up one of her poems, and Cookie is making history with comedy. Turn the 'scope quickly, the laughter around these two is contagious. . . . Here's a new addition to Western. Pardon me, but you look just like Margie Bernstein. Margie has told D1 all about the advantages of the co-ed schools in Washington. . . . Twist the kaleidoscope again and-look! The view from here is extreme-ly hazy. The tiny glass crystals have formed a huge pile of books with Betty Caplan peeping uncertain-ly over them. . . . The next design is a four pointed star. Occupying the nearest tip of the star is a neat little figure that looks E-xact-ly like Shirley Benner. She certainly gets along - and that's something Westward Ho! couldn't have done, without her. Perched on the next tip is thoughtful Betty Norris, who just washed her hair. CThat's only the second time this week. Mercy! j Betty has her art and her writing down pat On the third tip is Barbara Dreyer, trying to look like a stern teacher but unable to restrain her brilliant smile. Barbara goes all around with Betty and rises to any occasion. Poised on the last tip is Adelaide Hess, wondering why she can't gain weight when I do eat! Any group assigned to the Editor of Wertwmfd Ho! is sure to be ad-dressed well. . . . Dancing into focus now is congenial Felice Fedder, well groomed as ever. She doesn't seem to have enough time to do everything, but you can be sure she manages, to get in her dates. . . . The pieces of glass have now formed a music stand. Note the two girls trumpeting away. They're Ina Schwartz and Liebe Sokol! You can usually find DocI' Sokol writing up something from a medical book, whereas Ina prefers books that men-tion sports. . . . Coming into view is Doris Rimbey, Dl's talented seamstress. She's disappeared now, and is probably on her way to Mt. Airy. . . . The next design is Harriet Sachs, ad-dressing that letter she wrote to Freddy in her last study. She must have told him about the fingernail she broke in gym, her favorite period. . . . Look at this tempestuous arrangement. I wouldn't say that, says Elaine Smith as she dashes from school to where I work. . . . Here comes Phyllis Libowitz! Maybe she's dreaming up on ad-dition to one of her period-ic recitations for history class. . . . The figure on the 'scope now is carrying a tre-men- dous lunch. She has the cutest joke to tell you if you'll just tell me what it means. Of course it's Ruth Mesirow, who is always nice to be with. . . . Sharon Lokom is in view now. She likes all sports, as a spec- tator, and she's telling about them in her own rapid. everything-crammed-into-one-breath way. . . . A particularly colorful figure is Mary Morris, giving one of her well-known imitations along with her daily plea: Clean up your tables, girls. . . . The kaleidoscope K-pets to a stop as Dolores Koren and Cleo Kerla come into view. Dolores is dashing in, late as usual, to persuade Cleo to put away the ever present Latin book and talk awhile. . . . Helpful Frances Watkins is giving Thelma Lang some news of Doc They are trying to study 'all magazines in forty-five minutes. . . . Hilda Kinek, first aid in time of Spanish tests, forms a dark and interesting silhouette as she dreams of traveling for the State Department. . . . A modest figure with a quiet smile is Shirley Freedman, walking rapidly to school to do the homework I should have done last night. However, when she reaches school, she listens to Edna Mae Seltzer telling about the sports movie she saw. The hero not only made the winning touchdown but even played the trumpet in the band between halves. . . . The neat design of a grand friendf' Peggy Ann Dashiell, next appears. I can't remember the word, Miss Arnold, says Peggy, smiling at dramatic Janet Crow, who is on the road to Oklahoma,' or some other State of the Union. . . . With the next twist of the kaleidoscope comes versatile Joanne Johnson. jo is E-asily one of the most popular writers for Wertward H of, and her droll sense of humor is always pres-ent at orchestra rehearsal too. . . . What's this design? Is it a cockney, or is it one of the Nine Girlsn? Neither. Iris sophisticated Barbara Holder giving another of her impersonations. . . . The kaleidoscope is now focused on Eunice Carr, writing one of her many and interesting letters. Maybe her dry humor is the major key to her good work on the yearbook and at the U. S. O. . . . Here is a cheerful athlete of Dl-Dolores Tarun, urging the class to attend Western's latest sports event. . . . The next pattern is diamond shaped. Maybe that's prophetical of the hopes of H. 49 llljjrlllifj 6916, JAN YJ'-ji J! occ M wif - 0 xltjllsjjjxl . . ix 'og li ! ,. hwy 50 the four girls perched on its points. The first one, Nancy Lee Wilbur, is busily learning Henry's Law. She's holding the presidential gavel in one hand and her recent mail in the other. Next to Nancy is Janice Benson, puzzling over the rigamarole of recommendations for S. A. C. or giggling over some news she has just Doug up about clubs. Near Janice is Peggy Shirley, who is picturing the glories of the Univer- sity of Georgia. She's planning to write a sequel to Gone with the Wind as soon as Westward Ho! goes to press. On the last point is Helen Webb. Ruff! Look at the size of that scrapbook she's making! It's full of clippings about the Army, Poly, and Notre Dame football games. Don't you know she'll make a touchdown at the U. of M.? And so the kaleidoscope twirls to a stop amid the happy congeniality of the class of Dl. D2 The eight-forty-live bell on Wednesday morning has rung, and the auditorium is slowly beginning to fill with girls. There is the thud of seats A I. 4' being lowered and the hum of Western's voices discussing everything from Monday morning's surprise tests to Saturday night's dates. Down in the first seat of Row F we find Ellen Aist, who never wears sweaters and , - - never takes off those three bracelets. Her friend, Janis Klima, so e-fli- f'l V A cient in French and in making coconut cakes disappear, comes down the af aisle with Mary Lee Luebeck. Mary Lee is quietly discussing the possi- i. 7 , Q: 1 bility of giving a course on How To Win Buddies by Being Friendly. A Ann Edlow is certainly driving Elaine Fine and Barbara Golden to V ff F, distraction with her talk about green eyes and knitted ties. Why is i V f N if Barbara rummaging through her pocketbook? Our question is answered when Elaine says, So you're 'Fishing for the Moon' in your pocketbook, Barbf, Oh!, is that right! Barbara replies. And you such a fine friend too! Mildred Freishtat rolls her large brown eyes expressively as she says that there's really an art to playing tennis. As Bernice Caplan waits for the assembly to start, she sketches several of her friends and attracts many observers Because her drawing is so good. Next to Bernice is Marcia Levison excitedly talking to Janice Rosenstein about her black cocker Spaniel, Heathcliff. Janice will make good Use of Medicine if she carries out her plan to become a pharmacist. Marilyn Fedder interrupts her doodling long enough to tell the girls of her plans for studying sociology at the University of Maryland. By the oh's and ah's coming from Shirley Neistadt and Lenore Feldman, we can tell that vivacious Peggy Hopwood has another pair of novel shoes. Shirley is telling Lenore, a prospective script writer, that she is going to study law in college. She also says that she's studying to be the first woman president, and this brings forth Lenny's characteristic remark, Oh, my aching back! We can hardly interpret Joyce Gowman's remarks to Janet Eckert. However, we believe that Joyce is telling of her secret yearning to be a psychi- atrist. Janet is confiding that her ambition is to cook up a minstrel show at church. Across the aisle Norma Ragonese is being teased by her friends about who should be head of the family. Maybe Norma thinks the doctor should be boss. Beside her Louise Naviasky is drawing a picture of Elvira . Oh, my 'pem' broke, exclaims Louise impatiently. She then turns to Deborah Kaplan and seeks this student's counsel on what to do now. Je ne sais pas, ma chere, says reli-able Debbie. Doris Naimon, who hopes to become a journalist, will be able to illustrate her own books. Looking at Doris, it's easy to see why A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody. Joan Raskin is pre-med-itating on her future life at Goucher while Esther Rivkin, an authority on Why Science ls the Salvation of Mankind, is trying to get the attention of Annette Kristman. Annette, however, is too excited about the Springtime basketball games to pay much attention. Also interested in basketball is Betsy MacLeod, the artist of DZ. She rates high among her friends. Abby Phillips has depth not only in her voice but also in her eyes. She's a picture of fashion as she chatters to a near-by classmate, whose round, blue eyes, bangs, and rosy cheeks are like those of the typical Patsy-doll. It's Pat Tittsworth, of course. She's fun to play with, too. Betty Lovelace, a safe bet for any bacteriological laboratory, is saving a seat for Ann Weiss, whose late arrival is accounted for by her daily visit to Miss Jones. Dolores Schwartzman is picturing the various aspects of college life while Mary Elizabeth Elrick is accent-uating her positive dislike for cold weather. Nellie Lang, sitting next to Mary Elizabeth, well knows the difference between an era in history and an error in hockey. Bertha Robbins makes it her business to have a spark of originality in everything she does. Esther Spies is having one of the hardest times of her life saving a seat for Nan Mellinger, whose diver-se interests include amateur composing and painting. Our attention is now turned to the 51 front of the auditorium where Ruth Gluck and Barabara Hunley are seated among the orchestra members. We believe that Ruth must have dropped her violin coming into the auditorium because her mind was on a certain letter from College Park. Barbara, who is famous for wearing her shirts backwards, is playing her cello so expertly that it looks as if it would be easy as rolling off a logf' In her place on the stage, we can see Rose Rosett, voicing her opinion, no doubt, on political youth movements. Wilma Matthews is almost late for the assembly and has to take her seat rather hurriedly. We can imagine her saying to a fellow Glee Club member, Oh, horsefeathers! It's those clocks again. Everything becomes quiet at the eight-iifty-eight bell, and the assembly begins. When the program is over, Frances Golombek immediately begins to talk to Harriet Goldress about Trixie Lou and Gracie Sue. Harriet, whose prom picture her friends will remember, is putting up her c-hair as she listens. The girls start up the aisle as another assembly period comes to an end, and the conversation turns once more to lessons. D3 I sink into an easy chair and resign myself to a long evening of cramming for a Spanish test. El dura-dollar, el pan-bread, lmblm'- Hague 6929, to speak. Too bad if I can't remember that one, with all the blossoming '7 orators in our class. In-choir about jane Howard in history, and you'll see why her fever over her radio work has spread to Ann Zula, who's quite an actress even if she can't march the right way in gym. It's a QP' good thing that there are some girls who can uphold Miss Moeller's standards, like Nancy Redford. She's good in basketball and uligures' in upingmintoni' too. Then there are athletic souls like Frances Sommerfeld, , 1 Guardian of the Campfire Girls. I wonder if Frankie had a hand in converting Edna Heinz from the Eastern to the Western way of life. K ii Pobrecim. Now, let me see. Verde-green. Well, Mildred Klishis's eyes should help me remember that. Mildred's Sprightly And Charming personality was certainly one important feature of Wemmmf Ho! And I can hear jean Botts jingling her way up to 219 with page-s of correspondence as usual, for Mrs. North. . Trey-three. Reminds me of our trio, Veronica Woppman, Evelyn Mertz, and Rita Silverman. Ronnie's twinkling eyes seem to express her hopes to rise high in her career as a hostess. Rita will usually do anything, but one thing she can't Stan-d is getting up early. Theyill both remember Evelyn for her changeable eye-deas. Patriolico. Well, that should be easy. Patriotic like our basketball star, Marie Stricker. She can't even tell a midshipman from a sailor. You'd call her patriotic around school, though. Doris Leon, too. She brought the Rigamarole out of the rigamarole like a good scout. Nettie Lee Cascie is still arguing with Doris over the history,' of straw rides. La ciencia-science. I never realized there were so many budding scientists in our midst. Phyllis Hickman is eager to find the right chem lab to start working on her cold preventive formula. In the meantime, Gytell Rosen-cough will be supporting the Kleenex Company as she beats her drum for U. of M. With Brazilian accents on her U. of M. in the Wolverine State, Carolyn Shurts is working on Wertwawi Ho! Gilda Brodsky certainly keeps her telephone a live wire with Wilde', chatter about chemistry. Chemically speaking, Shirley Friedman is even yet talking about the time she almost ground up potassium chlorate. Despite this, she is always read-y to help Marilyn Kessler with her laboratory technique, a pet subject of Marilyn's discussions. El arte. Our class can be proud of Janet Galloway. You bet. She is a perfect symphony in Brown. Lois Berlin draws everything from men-us to ice skates. Then there's Elaine Steinmetz, a future nurse, glee-fully practicing her scales with Barbara Renard. Bobbie likes to spend her spare time sailing around the roller rink, but Betty Lou Leonard, in her free moments, can always strike up a conversation about her Youth Fellowship. Arguing about the case of marine life, Evelyn Zaiser is still trying to prove her point. Peguefio-little, small. I can't forget that one with our Little Four. Elinor is always Willing to show her wardrobe to Cathie Leonard, who wants to fly to St. Paul. Inge, not Ingyj' Lauer cheerfully whistles while she works over her post card collection. We could easily form a club of baseball fans headed by Louise Stout, a real lover of birds, Also in there pitching is Sonya Shane, she has a beautiful batting average, too. Have you noticed her eyes? Speaking of good sports, wasn't Doris Bucher fine in the Senior Play! 1 ,wc.x4 'I I 'QE X90 'Q C F Q i re? ' 52 Quiezo-quiet. Most of the girls think Betty Lehmeyer is quiet, but still she holds the title of Champion Bench Banger. Benches remind me of Dorothy Goldberg, who is certainly write at home on the side lines watching football games. Then there's Freda Lustman, smiling as usual over her memory book or that new two-tone dress. Gee whiz! Dorothy Zimmerman's tale about a certain sailor really entertains the Business Staff of Westward Ho! That reminds me. I'd better get down to business and start memorizing my Spanish. I bet Thelma Gold wouldn't have any trouble with this list. She could learn anything from piano to ping-pong. And Carol Roth surely has said it again with a fine tall-y of sales. El aqua-water. I wish I could swim as well as Fay Clement or look as picturesque on the beach as Corinne Watson. Oh, well, To Each His Own, as we said before. Valar-fly. Hmmm. That reminds me of Dorothy Treide, Hying with the moon to Ocean City, and Jean Sholl, with sky high hopes of becoming an airplane hostess. New York beckons Doris Matz. I wonder what's cooking up there. But this isn't getting my work done. Ayer--yesterday, el jardin- garden, dormir-to sleep. Oh, what's the use! D4 It is a rainy Monday morning, the beginning of a typical school week at Western. Impatiently waiting at the south entrance in the rain are ' :, june Wachter and Betty Ross, trying to persuade Mr. Linsenmeyer to open H the doors a few minutes earlier than usual. Entering close on their heels 5 f is Betty Skiles, brightening the dim room with her sparkling smile. - 5 - , A little later Dolores Wenker and Marion Selph, the two Girl Bri- x gaders, march in, their conversation a mixture of Virginia' countryside Q -I and unfinished homework Whizzing in and out on her way to band ,Y -. rehearsal is Jackie Raport, stopping only long enough to drop her books ' and pick up her drumsticks. Soon after this hasty exit, Jo Anne Bowles, Bing Crosby's future competitor, trots into the room. N In her seat by the window, Harriet Kahn is gazing wide-eyed at the Peabody catalogue, which holds A major key to her future. Near-by is Verne Seitz, busily illustrating het latest short story. She seems undis- turbed by Joyce Smith, who is modeling her British tweed suit, which seems sew attractive to Charlotte Henneman. However, Charlotte's head is in the clouds as she wings her way toward the state of matrimony. There is no need to listen to the animated conversation of the trio gathered by the back door, Marian Oppenheim, Lenore Rubin, and Shirley Schnitzer, to know that their topic is either the past week end or current fashions. Nadja Barron interrupts this endless discussion to ad notes .of cheer for Western. Gloria Eisenberg tags at Nadja's heels as she eagerly recounts the latest news of a certain military school. As soon as she enters and is settled, Helen jeffrey draws crowds of classmates around her when she opens her art portfolio. For a change, Joyce Poland is quietly sitting at her desk, ad-tracting attention to the decorative figures on her history notebook. One of the girls gazing at them is Anna Henkelman, who, in turn, gives her daily diagnosis of a current movie. Across the aisle sits Marie Gates. The rapt look on her face isn't caused by Sue Cadden's thorough review of physics or Phyllis Hammersla's perpetual chatter about wanting to graduate, but by thoughts of the Lone Star State. Betty Ann johns seems to be thinking only about the latest hockey game, which she describes with all her customary pep and vivacity. In the far corner of 317 sits Evelyn, apparently busy with her history homework, but actually decor- ating the pages of her notebook with Wright cute drawings. Faint murmurs which sound strangely like Oh by golly! seem to be coming from that same corner where Grace Pritchett is sorting out Cit's only the third time this weekj her ever increasing stack of photographs. Near-by is Lee Kolman, laughing at one of Natalie Miller's humorous experiences at a recent dance. Lee is reallyT' .interested in getting that new record that Natalie is telling her about. Y 1 53 As she goes from group to group, Ruth Batzler is busily trying to get a word in edgewise about the newest addition to her memory book, while jean Watson, grinning impishly, gossips unheedingly about her awnt. Bringing into a debate the first person she sees, Rhona Molofsky dramatically defends her ideas about some major social problems. Here comes dynamic Shirley Klein, who is too breathless to argue even if she had time. Shirley, already well on her way to recognition as a concert pianist, proves the adage Good things come in small packages. Blushing, and gasping for breath after frenzied dash across the campus and up three flights of stairs, Shirley Kruger slides into her place just as the eight-fifty-eight bell is ringing. Tired but triumphant, bright-eyed Marguerite Kuper follows her, poised with a new plea for disturbing the tranquillity of D4. And so the class settles into the routine of another busy day at Western. D5 A penny movie! Put a penny in the slot, turn the handle, look in, and there's-- Charlotte Rosenthal, wearing another hair band, as usual, and one of her brother's numerous rings. If this penny movie didn't have a sound track, you'd miss hearing the contagious laughter of Lillian Weinapple. However, Lil's personality would be noticeable even on a silent screen .... By turning the handle, you bring Lena Snyder into view. She's studying short-hand. Natch! . . . From the box you now hear strains from Chopin. At the piano is Mary Lee Campbell, who is just Wilde about fencing. Her friend, Jane Bell, strikes you as being the athletic type . .. The scene changes quietly as a mouse this time. lt's only a technicalityf' says Dorothea Benfer, laughing as usual .... just behind Dorothea is Pearl Shoenig, the gem of the picture. Pearlie likes airplanes and hopes to be a pilot. . . . On the screen now is quiet Audrey Norjen, giving her favorite request Make Mine Music. . . . Edna Poist dances by, talking almost as fast as she can type to Dot Bedsole and Betty Malarkey. Dot's quiet personality will bowl the Navy over, and Malark's eyes give the green light to excellent uservicef' . . . Click! You hear May Lowman cheerfully offering to take pictures of anything and anyone- a shutterbug at heart. . . . Oh, great!'i Therels Gerry Blakey blushing again. She must have gotten her dates mixed up for the minute . . . Attracted by a contagious laugh, you peer further into the box and see Ruth Goldberg, who is just the type, tickling Evelyn Eisenstadt and saying, You're cute! Evelyn is protesting, Stop it! in her Pennsylvania draw-1. . . . Do you hear the sound of clicking keys? You might have guessed it, there's Carol Gradman, typing with E's articles for '47. . . . Listen! Mary Klein is still claiming that she looks like a French poodle. You can bet that some-Bunny disagrees with her. . . .This scene seems to be a trifle blurred, probably because Rusty Koller is running home from school to hear that Ding-a-ling on her phone. .... Now you see Betty Barnes, trying to get an inspiration by pushing her glasses up with her hand, or maybe just trying to hide a laugh. . . . And there's Dottie Buckmaster, Don-ning a neat outfit, for I just can't wait for the week-endli' . . . The next turn of the handle brings Joan Hampel into view. Friendly joan takes the cake as well as the Bentalou Street Bus. . . . Seen now are Ruth Focht and Catherine Hance, dreaming up a trip to South America. Ruth may have to Surren- der her sports for a while, and carefree Catherine may have a time with her hay fever among all the flowers. . . . There's only one person on the screen now, Sonya Benjamin. It's no wonder, for Sonya is a musical show in herself. . . . Now Ruth Beechener is whizzing by. She Always likes things to happen fast. l'Definitely! . . . Turning the handle again, you see blonde Ginny Zieler, dancing on roller skates, no kidding! Her two friends, Joanna Trieschman and Betty Lou Barron, seem to have forgotten her for the moment. Jo is looking all over for something, She'd beter brace herself against her loss. Thoughtful Betty Lou is just looking into the future. Dreaming of Hollywood or the next Tello-Test, perhaps. . . . On the screen now is Elvira Hindman, holding the heel from her shoe in one hand. Is that a letter from the Navy in the other hand, Mickey? Now the screen is blacked out, but memories of D5 will remain bright forever. 54 D6 Next on our list is D6. We might drop in on their class meeting which Iona Davis, the Student Rep, is conducting. We may be a little late, but it appears that we're not the only ones. v Annie Cramer Crushing in breathlesslyb. I'm sorry I'm late, girls, V but I've been up helping Miss Burke. What have you decided so far? Q Iona Davis. Well, Norma Taron suggested that we wear orchids t, for Senior Day. With gold ribbons they would be perfect for our class 'X X colors. She isn't here to make her suggestion herself, since Westward H o! N takes all her time now. X Margaret Roth. I think we should change our colors to something ' X E' more striking. And how about the food situation? Why not more for- eign food in the cafe? Evva Mae Compher. I don't like that idea. Can't you just C foreign food in our school! Eileen Streb. By the way of changing the subject, how about a tea dance with St. Joe sometime? Dorothy Dandreo would be right on the Dot for that. It's not fair to invite Poly and City all the time. Beverly Foresti. What's wrong with City? Eileen Streb. Nothing as far as you're concerned. You're sew well known at City. Elsie Cramer. That's a good idea, but wouldn't it be novel to combine our boat ride with the dance. We could go down to the Marine base and have a perfectly marvelous time! Lois Ellis. It's Been a Long, Long Time since I've heard anything that good. I agree heartily. Dorothy Perry. If only they'd play something besides popular music! I like music, but after all. Audrey Culp. What do you call Stuck Up Blues ? Iona Davis. No arguments, please. Elizabeth Bruns. Well, I could bring some of my choir music, but if I didn't get it back for rehearsal, I'd feel like two little cents. Pat Deuber. If we plan anything like that, let's make sure that it really comes off. I can't stand people who promise to do something and then don't. And why don't we have a pole vaulting contest? Audrey Culp. I think I'll stay home and read Poly-anna. Iona Davis. Listen! How would you like a swimming and sailing party? I know all these good sports like Annie would go for that. A Dorothy Cascio. It might be nice to go bike riding. Hey, Aud, how would you like that? Audrey King. I couldn't wear dressy clothes to that though, could I? And how could I fix my hair? Iona Davis. One person who won't have to worry about that is Jeanne Stewart. She always looks neat-never a hair out of place. . Jeanne Stewart. By George! No wonder people call Iona the rnost outstanding girl in the class! She can say the nicest things. Betty Abeln. Since this is supposed to be a meeting, may I make a suggestion? I think it would be a good idea if we pooled our records. I have quite a few, and if the other girls would bring in some, we could have a fine collection for all of us to use. Dolores Tauter. I think it's a grand idea, and I'd really love to help. I'll bring in as many as I can. Of course we must have I Don't Know Why. How about it, June? June Evans. Huh? Oh! Oh, yes. I love that song too. Rona Goldstein. Begin the Beguine for me. Rose Hobbs Cbreathlesslyj. Here I am, late again. I've been up with Miss Burke, as usual. Yes, dear, I broke another nail on that machine. What's going on? Joyce Chambers. Anybody want to go to the football game with me? I wish the Orioles were playing now. Betty Green. Personally, I'd rather go ice skating. Only with all this homework, I guess I won't be able to. Isn't there any way we can eliminate homework? C General uproar.D Iona Davis. I think this would be a good time for Charlotte to take over, since she's our other Student Rep. Charlotte Wise. O. K., if the meeting doesn't last too long. I have to help Miss Burke, and then I want to see the Ramblers play. Any more ideas? Eleanor Hoensch. Liz, I wonder if you would have time to decorate some hair ribbons for me. Those paintings you did were really pretty. Elizabeth Hermann. I'll do it if you'll play your accordion for us. That's right down your alley. Charlotte Wise. You seem to have your plans all made. What about the rest of you? 55 Claire Kirk. I hope I don't have to wait long for my ship to come in. Doris Breeding and I will be holding a personal pow-wow with the Navy. Shirley Datch. just to be different, l'm not going to get married. I think I'll be a credit manager. Myra Lapides. While you're slaving on that, I'm going to see what I can do about making Western co-ed and getting lots of classical music to while away our spare hours. Betty Lee Woods. What spare hours? Why I hardly have enough time for my embroidery, and since they refuse to start an embroidery class, this is practically my only chance during school. Iill never get enough for my hope chest. Charlotte Wise. Well, girls, I have to be getting up to Miss Burke now. Think it over, and we'll vote on your suggestions tomorrow morning. The meeting of D6 is adjourned. D7 Perched upon the sundial on the campus is Fuzzy, a squirrel, watching the girls of D7 waiting to have their picture taken. At his right, he notices Annabel Madera debating with Evelyn Orndorff on how to avoid any further , 7' , incidents on stairway five. Next to them is sympathetic Marie Peters, listen- . ing attentively to tiny Merle K1offke's latest tale of woe. Betty Stafford, Q y gob-bling up some chocolate covered peanuts, is asking Nancy Gainor why x ' '-'1. - f she persists in twisting her hair. Shorty's reply that she is nervous about ' 'V ' 5 , if,y,'., her work indicates the need of a tune up. just then, Grace House dashes EL ' across the campus shouting, Has Kil-Roy been here?l' .Qt The little squirrel, reaching for another nut, notices quiet Viola Pitke- gf vits dreaming of the happy day in June when she will receive her diploma. As for futures, Fuzzy predicts that jean Stedding will bank a fortune in silver dollars, and that her friend jean Stack will continue going her way. He overhears Ann Williams usketchingl' her plans for the next hop to Bettie Martin, a junior-sized athlete but a major part of Westerns sports. Jean Stephans is seen making the rounds to be certain that everyone has seen her driver's license and her most recent letter from Georgia. Pegganne McPhail instantly retaliates by showing Jean the latest green addition to her wardrobe, which seems to suit her Scotch- Irish ancestry. Dorothy Moore, Gwendolyn Morrow, and Mary Yienger are gathered by the flagpole, watching Ethel Hall, who dreams about her plunge into the sea of knowledge. Dorothy's you all distinguishes her as a Southern belle. This cute little girl with a turned-up nose and freckles is wondering if Reds Yienger has yet set aglow the heart of a tall boy. Gwen's blonde hair against the blue sky would be an ideal subject for her own camera, Fuzzy muses. As he watches Judine Watts and Ruth Weidmaier cutting up on the campus, he recalls their Sopho- more slogan, Frogs for Friends, and scampers up the nearest tree. Nearly choking on another nut, the squirrel giggles uncontrollably as the contagious laughter of the shorthand group of eight reaches him. The big brown eyes of mischievous Marilyn Melnokoff are opened wide as she hears Gertrude Weintraub's latest piece of verse. Certainly the poem which begins Wasted time is lost time is a masterpiece of characterization. Shirley Krieger ads to the conversation with her witty remarks, provoking glee-ful laughter and the customary exclamation Vayismere! from Gloria Forshlager. And here comes the busy B of D7, Evelyn Berdinsky, who plays in sports and works on Westward Ho! She now tells one of her jokes, to the amusement of janet Houch and Dolores Millinix. As Dolores is showing janet her bangle bracelets, she suddenly remembers her 2:50 date. janet warns her to run real fast like a bunny and then immediately begins to try out that new jitterbug step. And does the poor little squirrel's hair stand on end as the suspicion dawns on him that Dorothy Pres Behrens may be responsible for the lack of the ninth girl! Gazing at the girls again, the squirrel can't help chuckling over Betty Folus's ring-ing voice and novel ideas. The conversation of this last group on the campus is enlivened by Myra Kaplowitz's account,' of the night before. Alma Fishman, whose mind is on the stars, is brought down to earth by Mrs. O'Keefe's announcement that DTS picture is to be taken next. While Ruth Koren receives the announcement as law, Fuzzy sees Beverly Baumls baby blue eyes roll innocently upward as she remarks, Are you kidding? Petite Shirley Gammerman drops her miniature pile of books and dashes over to get into this latest addition to her picture album. And so the entire class gets settled, and each girl gazes starry-eyed at the camera to produce a pictorial record of '47's D7. 56 .. S.-at . X X Alice As our Christmas project for 1946, the Western High School adopted Alice Swartz- pelc, a fourteen-year-old Polish girl. In doing this we pledged that we would try our best to be a big sister to her. We have been sending letters and gifts to our foster child, who is living in Belgium. In this way Alice is learning about the traditions, the everyday life, and the never ending activities of our school. The Class of 1947 has felt so close to Alice that we want her to have a place in our yearbook. SK fm -li M wg if C T' f K T ' 1 2 I 'gil l i I r, A . 43 a 5 B b . 5 .J 2f' I . The Tenth Word umm, s i Nine Girly Junior Prom W nd.-M JILQA., R zgnmaw '0 lc ln the spring of our Sophomore year, several girls suggested to Mrs. North that 1947 publish a newspaper. The following fall, the official word of approval was given, and everyone interested in working on the paper was asked to volunteer. At the first meeting, Janice Benson was elected editor-in-chief, Clara Lu Bell was chosen assistant editor, and ten other juniors were elected to the editorial staff. lt wasn't long before the make-up of the paper was decided upon, and the contest for finding an appropriate name was under way. From the many names submitted, the one suggested by Doris Leon was finally chosen-Rigamarole! Issues of the paper were published in October, Decem- ber, April, and june. A copy of Rigamarole was given to every girl in 1947, every teacher, and every school and year officer. We hope that everyone felt as Miss Coughlin did when she said in her letter to the editor: The bright and cheerful style so evident in Rigumarole is typical of Juniors everywhere and is a delightful contrast to the dignity of Senior publications. I enjoyed it immensely! C55 OFFICERS OF THE CLASS OF I948 'T7'6d.fZH'61' Arriftmzz Treasurer C owefpomiing Secretary DORIS WYANT JEANEIIEHEKLOF ARLENE GARVERICH Vice-Pfeficien! We were not quite sure of ourselves when we started high school, but entering into our various activities helped us to feel that we were a part of Western. We felt even more at home when our sister year entertained us with a minstrel show. We enjoyed the entertainment, even though it was difficult to recognize the juniors with their blackened faces and curly wigs. The Sandman Cometh, our Sopho- more Day presentation, featured some of our best talent and gave to Western a bit of the fanciful. In the spring we had a garden party for the Seniors. Besides our special events, there were the little things which made our Sophomore year memorable- the birthday parties in the cafeteria, the scrambles in the locker sections, and the beauty of Westerns campus in the spring. As we look back upon many things, both big and small, and think of the friends we have made among the girls and the teachers, we realize that our first year at Western has been a happy one, and we look forward eagerly to the years to come. 67 A Little time for laughter, A little time to Jing. Now, as we leave Western, we are confronted with, perhapsgithe most challenging of them all-to help establish, in this new fage,-1 -peace on earth, good will toward men. Through our democratic education We have learned that this can be achieved only when the peoples of the world understand each other.
