Spirits rose We were tops... SENIORS AT LAST! Nothing could hold us down, we were flying higher than a B-19. We were upper- classmen with all the privileges and honors apper- taining thereto. Freshies, sophomores, even the stately juniors looked up to us in respect. To our surprise and satisfaction, we found that our teachers also seemed to have realized that we were grown-up, for at times they treated us with a semblance of respect. Of course, there were times, times when we forgot our seat in study hall and got our co- efficient mixed up in gym, when they accused us of lacking freshie intelligence, but on the whole our age and wisdom was recognized and appreciated. That year members of '42 took over most of the executive positions of the clubs, the Student Council, and various committees. That year we were all resolved to make our long cherished dreams come true, dreams of a senior day, a senior play, a prom, a graduation. We Seniors were on top of the world all right. We came back to school in the fall still wearing 18 our broomstick skirts and huaraches, and still moving in the blissful aura of vacation time, but we soon realized that our hours of idleness were at an end. All too soon we were cognizant of the sacrifice and endurance which lay ahead. An avalanche of themes, translations, and transcriptions descended upon us. Even the once easy-going and relaxing gym periods were no more, for the gym department was all out for building us up for defense. ln class we stretched, we strained, we groaned, and for relaxation we 'fducked for the oysteri' and dug for the clamw and swung our rapid confusion that we were After school we were to walk, partnersl' in such literally laid out. sleep UTI, and chart our every exertion. Our Senior elections were in keeping with our strenuous life. Ballot after ballot had to be cast before we could choose the finest out of so many good candidates. Ultimately we came up with a set of oliicers that pleased the most exacting. When Senior Day arrived, we were proud to march down the aisle behind our chosen leaders: Margaret Junghans, our president, carrying the American Hag, Doris Hamilton, our vice-president, carrying the Maryland Hag, Phyllis Childs, our secretary, carrying the Baltimore flag, Pat Howe, president of the Student Council, carrying the School Hag, Gertrude Drafts, our treasurer, carry- ing the Senior banner, and ,lean Fretwell, assistant treasurer, carrying the 1942 banner. In her reminiscent remarks, our president took us back to the days when we were rookies and carried us along through our 'cthirteen weeksi' of intensive training until we achieved our stripes. We sat back with a good deal of complacency as our chief of staff and our commanding officers commended us upon our promotion and expressed confidence in our ability to take over.
