LONG files stretched in an almost endless line from the bus to the huge red building before us. Breathless, ex- cited, fearful, we fell in and followed those whom the great door seemed to swallow. lnside we were directed to D the auditorium by gay and laughmg girls. How could iz 69 Q l f 0 1 qi 57 'Q F4 1 ,A 'fill ll anyone laugh at such a time? -f N - l'Since then we have learned i '-- that they were seniors.l In the auditorium, which seemed to us immense, we awaited our orders. Presently Miss Coughlin, a lady we have all grown to know, respect, and admire, addressed us. Soon she began calling long rolls, and from time to time a detachment would rise and follow the appointed teacher. Deep sighs of relief escaped our lips when we finally heard our names called. An endless line . . . Vl7e rose and cast furtive glances to see whether or not there were familiar faces in our company. The first days were confusing, but immensely exciting. lfach new door brought new adventureg new teachers, new subjects, new friends. How well we remember our very first assembly, when we were introduced to our year advise1's, Miss Burner and Miss Raitt! How vividly we remember those first tedious hours spent in the biology lab learning again how to printl How timid we were when we entered those scholarly Latin rooms, certain that we should be called upon to deliver an oration or write a much dreaded term paperl And what fears crept through our hearts as we tried to tell ourselves that the new typing teacher wouldnit expect a hundred words a minute without errors! However, as the weeks more on and the first pangs of pain subsided, we realized that we were not expected to be snpervvomen. School life began to fall into a definite pattern, days became more routine. We began to play our part in Western, even if it was only the traditional role of a bewildered sophomore. ln a few weeks we were confronted with a new and exciting responsibility. We were to elect the officers of our year. Sponsor sheets were being passed from every direction in the cafe, in the homeroom, and between classes. Girls were fran- tically preparing their speeches, the sponsor trying her best to put her candidate in the front ranks and the candidate trying to make a good impression. As the result of a tight election Doris Hamilton became president, Margaret Junghans, vice-presi- dent, June Krickhan, secretary, and Gertrude Drafts and Miriam Shamer, treasurers. We were proud of our ollieers and pledged ourselves to support them. The election brought to us more than the oflicers of our year, for at that time we made many new acquaintances among our classmates who had arrived at Western five months previously. They had been marching along, not waiting for us to join the ranks, and were now eager to break us in and show us the ropes. They had many stories floating around about their parties and celebrations and their tree planting on Arbor Day. They often spoke of their junior-Freshman Party. Evidently The Florist Shop, a play presented on that day. had left a very deep impression of the spinster and her lovers. There was one day, however, that was more memorable than anywthe Freshman Rally. That was the day on which they ofhcially became a part of the school. We looked forward to days like those. which our senior classmates assured us would come. And. indeed, in a very sort time they did come. We were still forgetting our seats in the study halls when our great day, Sophomore Rally. brought us Sophie Moore, with her pigtails and her baggy gym suit and ideas of taking showers before the gym period. When we saw her metamorphosis from pigtails to president, we began to have hope for ourselves. Besides the play there was the excite- ment of wearing white dresses in the middle of winter and the deeper, more serious implications of our Sophomore Rally day. We had been at this time oflieially accepted as a part of Western. Teachers and fellow students, from the jauntiest Junior to the most sophisticated Senior, took us for what we were and tried to make us feel at home. Before long we found that it was time to enter- tain our sister year, the Seniors. at the Sophomore- Senior party. Evelyn Woodis Marionettes made a BIFIIIHIUIL Street and points south 15 What,s eookin, ?', line beginning for the party and one of our tea dances brought it to a delightful close. Our Sophomore year was devoted not only to entertainment, but also to some good works. During this year war had begun in Europe and the Red Cross was sending out a call for help. The sophomore Associated Biology Clubs sponsored a dance, which proved so successful that we were able to present a substantial sum to the American Red Cross. Before we fully realized what had happened, we had successfully carried out the first maneuvers of our high school Career, and vacation time had come. Should we like to go through again all the bewilder- ment, anxiety and new experiences? We sometimes wonder. We were midway... . . . When we came back to Western in the fall, we were not bashful, not boldg no longer bewildered newcomers, not yet benign old-timers, just juniors. Behind us lay our first year, a year crammed full The pause that refreshes of good times and memorable ufirstsfi Ahead of us lay our last year, a year of responsibility and superiority. But we wasted very little time in reminiscing over the past or dreaming about the future. All of our energy was concentrated on the present, in breaking every record set by other junior classes. We got off to a Hying start with the election of our class olhcers. When it came to choosing oliicers we really knew how. We voted wisely and well, if we do say so ourselves. How could we miss with ofhcers like President, Jane Beallg Vice-President, Doris Hamilton, Secretary, Margaret ,iunghansg Treasurer, Gertrude Drafts, and Vice-Treasurer, Gloria Congleton? We couldn't and we didn't. as 5 is W . ,rbi if T h i m, 721: 1' 'f -i' in X. Z ,'l lm 4' 7. T52 . Q- , I 1' , 7:7 H- ix 'g 42 4 ' s i N gf fiil.-f-L-' I -f+. -5 , f' C-.. The Junior-Freshman Party helped break some records. The play, given by '42,s talented actresses to entertain the Freshies was unusual to say the least. L'The Travelersfi definitely a hair-raiser, was a weird, creepy drama that contained all the ele- ments necessary to scare the daylights out of the audience-strange muffled noises, mysterious dis- appearances, would-be Boris Karloffs, and gruesome servants with green faces. Through the year, we gnashed our teeth over physics, determined to master the subject or go down fighting. We struggled valiantly with the orations of the Right Honorable M. Tullius Cicero. We wrestled with Gregg. But in the midst of our hard work, our dilhculties in one subject or another, we took time out to weep for Sydney Carton, a character who tugged at the heartstrings of us all. The Christmas vacation provided a breathing spell, and after the holidays the Juniors again took up the Well-known theme-uThere's a Great Day Coming. Money poured in for our first yellow roses. Another hit was chosen, our energetic stars and directors toiled long hours after school, we Time out went around in a constant flurry of preparation. Weeks raced by, a monthgtwo months, and finally -Junior Day. Our play HThe Romancersfi a delightful romantic comedy that concerned the maneuverings of a couple of old gentlemen to bring about the marriage of their children, was a tremend- ous success. The costumes for the play were especially effectivegpowdered wigs for all the characters, a dainty, full-skirted pink satin gown for the heroine, blue brocade, lace frills, and a real sword for the hero. Still flushed with dramatic success, we proceeded from romantic comedy to light opera. We lent the talent of 742 to the school project in producing Victor Herbertis Babes In Toyland. 1942 was proud to have its members capture the roles of Contrary Mary, the heroine, little Red Riding Hood, Boy Blue, the Spider, and several and sundry soldiers, dolls, workmen, and peasants. The music, the dancing, the costumes, the scenery, and the proceeds made the operetta one of Westernjs four- star productions. Before the excitement of the operetta had died down, 742 was in a dither over the Junior Prom- whether a Conga line was to be or not to be, the kind of favors, the orchestra, the escort, and the place to go afterward. By the night of April 26th, however, all differences were ironed out, prom ww N1 111ss 1 111 111111111 11111w11111s. SENIORS AT LAST! Nothing could hold us down, we were flying higher than a B-19. We were upper- classmen with all the privileges and honors apper- taining thereto. Freshies, sophomores, even the stately juniors looked up to us in respect. To our surprise and satisfaction, we found that our teachers also seemed to have realized that we were grown-up, for at times they treated us with a semblance of respect. Of course, there were times, times when we forgot our seat in study hall and got our co- efficient mixed up in gym, when they accused us of lacking freshie intelligence, but on the whole our age and wisdom was recognized and appreciated. That year members of '42 took over most of the executive positions of the clubs, the Student Council, and various committees. That year we were all resolved to make our long cherished dreams come true, dreams of a senior day, a senior play, a prom, a graduation. We Seniors were on top of the world all right. We came back to school in the fall still wearing 18 our broomstick skirts and huaraches, and still moving in the blissful aura of vacation time, but we soon realized that our hours of idleness were at an end. All too soon we were cognizant of the sacrifice and endurance which lay ahead. An avalanche of themes, translations, and transcriptions descended upon us. Even the once easy-going and relaxing gym periods were no more, for the gym department was all out for building us up for defense. ln class we stretched, we strained, we groaned, and for relaxation we 'fducked for the oysteri' and dug for the clamw and swung our rapid confusion that we were After school we were to walk, partnersl' in such literally laid out. sleep UTI, and chart our every exertion. Our Senior elections were in keeping with our strenuous life. Ballot after ballot had to be cast before we could choose the finest out of so many good candidates. Ultimately we came up with a set of oliicers that pleased the most exacting. When Senior Day arrived, we were proud to march down the aisle behind our chosen leaders: Margaret Junghans, our president, carrying the American Hag, Doris Hamilton, our vice-president, carrying the Maryland Hag, Phyllis Childs, our secretary, carrying the Baltimore flag, Pat Howe, president of the Student Council, carrying the School Hag, Gertrude Drafts, our treasurer, carry- ing the Senior banner, and ,lean Fretwell, assistant treasurer, carrying the 1942 banner. In her reminiscent remarks, our president took us back to the days when we were rookies and carried us along through our 'cthirteen weeksi' of intensive training until we achieved our stripes. We sat back with a good deal of complacency as our chief of staff and our commanding officers commended us upon our promotion and expressed confidence in our ability to take over. S. adopts victory program! Forming a meaty filling between slices of spring and fall, the summer victory course is now under way. We who are taking it are given the title of Victory Volun- teers,', which, of course, makes us very proud to be doing our part for victory. Just what does our part mean? It means that we have now added another subject to our curricula and that we shall go to school for ten weeks this summer, taking two hours of three subjects each. It means that we shall be graduated a half year earlier and thus be able to work in defense industries or go to college that much sooner. The first group of victory volunteers will be graduated in September, 194-2, instead of February, 1943, and thus will be the first group in our school to contribute to the victory program. But doing our part also means that we now have eight studies, instead of the usual seven, a week. The result is that we have little time left to write to friends in the army or to discuss friends with the girls across the aisle. Vile can spare few nights at the movies con- soling ourselves with Clark Gable or Tyrone Power. But these are small matters compared to the summer sacrifices. We shall not diminish the bankroll by going to the pool every day and out every night. We shall not make ourselves soft by sleeping until one every day and luxuriously lazying around the house in shorts for the rest of the day. But we are more than willing to make these slight sacrifices, when we know that they may contribute somewhat to the fight for democracy. The V. V. girls echo the slogan of our democracy talks: Which shall it be? Which shall it be? Nazism or Democracy? We'll fight, fight, fight, 'Till right makes might! And our slogan shall be: For Democracy! And our slogan shall be: For Victory! GLORIA BERLIN, V.V. When the puzzle is half-way finished, we often pause and look back to see just how much we have accomplished. Clam-ing backward, we see the various activities which we, as one body, have done. We see the Freshman Frolie, which first brought 743 together. We see the Junior-Freshman party in which we, as timid little Freshies, were first introduced to our sister year. Next we see the Sophomore Rally, the day on which we officially became part of Western High School. It was at this time that we first presented our year olhcers to the school, and it was also at this time that we presented a play which reviewed what we had done and prophesied what the future held in store for us. Soon after, we held the Sophomore-Senior Party, at which we entertained our sister year with our home talent, followed by a dance in the gym. Having looked back on what we have achieved, we now begin to fill out the remainder of the jigsaw puzzle. The next piece to our puzzle is 'flunior Day. On this day we shall officially become juniors. Then, of course, we shall have our junior Prom, which will be the best ever because every junior 'Lfought for it. The next piece to our puzzle is a substitute for the Junior-Senior Boatride. The next to the last piece, we hope, will be our Senior Prom, which will be our last formal get-togetherl' before we are graduated. The puzzle is completed when we receive our sheepskins', at graduation and leave the portals of Western as the War Class, and the first Victory Volunteers. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS llarrif-I flenzler, Elizabeth Shantz, Betty Borenstein, Agnes Manning, Marian Spielman. Anna Capone. .lean Cohen. 73 The Class of '44 5'Western will honor the black and gold, As we go marching byf' With these words, our Sophomore Rally ended. Everyone seemed to enjoy our play, and on the whole, our Sophomore Rally was successful. It was our first public appearance since the UB classes joined us in September. Looking back a year to our first few weeks at Western, we remember gazing with awe at the other girls who seemed to find their way safely through the corridors to their classrooms. How- ever, after the Junior-Freshman Party when we were so graciously welcomed by our sister class, we felt we had a place in Westernis family. As time went on, we began to make plans for the Freshman Frolic, which was held out-of-doors one very pleasant spring after- noon. Several of us were even brave enough to escort some of the faculty. We had a grand time until the thunder clouds sent us scurrying home. We reached safety, but missed the extra portions of ice cream. Inspired by this success, we made plans for our Sophomore Rally play, which included glimpses of Western High School in 1844, 1944, and 2044. On this day, too, our newly elected class officers were installed. We sat in the senior rows at the assembly, and sang our class song for the first time. As we recited our pledge, we realized that more than any other class, we should uphold Western's high principles, since we shall graduate when our school is one hundred years old. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Standing: .loyce Brightbill, Flora Gahan, Patricia Conway, Mary Gene Kennedy. Seated: Marie O'Keefe, Doris Cooke, Esther Ossermann. 74- T 75 Westward Ho! THE THREE MUSKETEI-IRS! One for all and all for one! Thatls the Editorial Staff, the Typing Staff, and the Advertising Staff of WESTYVARD HO! To each of us our part in the making of this year's WESTWARD HO! was the staff of life. It was no laughing matter to throw over Bob Hope and Red Skelton for a quiet evening scavenging through Webster for synonyms. It was no cinch to decipher writing strangely close to hieroglyphics without the aid of a Rosetta Stone. And it was no joy ride to squeeze blood out of a turnip and a few dead beets. But after allls said and done, there was plenty of fun to outweigh any dark moment. Furthermore, each of us was proud to help and would bend over backward to do the same again. We only hope that the finished product justifies our efforts and reaches our aspirations .... STAFF Co-Editors-in-Chief ....,,..., ......,................. ELEANOR JONES, CAROLINE DELANEY THE SHOW MUST GO ON If at about 3:15 on any third Thursday of the month a Westernite takes a notion to peek into the auditorium, she is more than likely to meet a panorama strange to the unprepared eye. All appears to be confusion. On the stage a girl is kneeling at the feet of another, pleading in a voice husky with emotion. Miss Wagner, wearing the harried expressions of Frank Capra and Cecil B. De Mille combined, is directing and uputting across the scene. A loud crash and clatter is heard as Mr. Linsenmeyer and the Herculean prop- erties committee drag scenery across the stage and make last minute alterations in the set. ln one wing two girls are rehearsing each other, as another paces across the stage and practices pipe smoking, struggling to attain the pull proper to an elderly 82 CLEE CLUB Pres.-Gertrude Drafts, Vice-Pres.--Ann Losey, Sec.-W Cloria Congleton, Treas.--Phyllis Moran, Sponsor-Mrs. Masson. Rivia LEVINE, FRANCES SHALLER THEY ALSO SERVE The tap, tap, tap of typewriter keys, the clash bang of filing cases being closed, the fingers inked by mimeograph machines, the dash of girls to deliver a Hmessage to Carciaf, and the blood, sweat and near tears over not too well written shorthand notes are evidences of the fact that the Service Club is in action. Letters typed for department heads, tickets and programs printed, and central fund records being kept are evidences of the good works rendered to the school by the club. Jane, did you bring that blue material you promised for one of the madonna pictures? Well, try to remember it tomorrow. You know the assembly is only a week off, and we haven't half the properties needed for the dress rehearsal. We can't use the same costumes for different pictures, and l've never seen a madonna wearing a sweater and skirt. Heavens, Mary Ellen, look where you're going with that! That means a dance is simply out of the question. The officers gaze in dismay at each other. With a disgusted pull of the hair, Peggy replies that the auditorium is also out of the question as a re- hearsal is in progress there. What has the Math Club ever done to deserve such a fate? However, with clever maneuvering, a place is finally secured, the fatal Thursday arrives, and we fearfully rush to our meeting place to be certain it is ours. One of the presidents opens the meeting, while she suspiciously eyes the door for intruders. Not until the minutes are read and approved, do we feel safe to relax and center our attention upon the entertainment. The entertainment, regardless of its form, always affords gaiety for our fun loving audience. The heroine of our play may be in tears, but the mem- bers of the Math Club are in gales of laughter. However, the participants in the afternoon meeting may always be sure of one row of dignified and attentive members, the Mathematics teachers, who always sit on the last row. We are often envious of their choice seats, since very little can be heard that far back! With a great deal of pomp and ceremony the meeting is brought to a close, and the chatter and laughter of departing members slowly ebbs away. Roberta O'Wesney, Vivian Abbott, Gloria Kelly. FA LL OF 1941 September, 1941, found serious sun-tanned seniors once again buckling down to the job. The Athletic Reps were among the first to answer the call, for the A. A. Board assembled during the second week of school. The election of officers was a headache, for there were too many candidates who were both competent leaders and active athletes. At last, however, the voting was closed and the following girls assumed their respective oflicesz Gloria Weaver, president, Irene Frahm, vice-presi- dent, Virginia Helldorfer, secretary, and Gloria Wurzberger, treasurer. But the day had just begun! Miss Dennis, faculty adviser of the A. A. Board, sprang a surprise. Because of the national defense program, weekly exercise charts, on which pupils were required to record their daily calisthenics, were to be distributed and collected each week by the Athletic Reps. Pandemonium broke loose, but Miss Dennis got the meeting quiet enough to announce that a Hallowe'en subscription dance would be given to raise funds for square dance records. Standing committees were appointed, and another stormy session of the A. A. Board was adjourned. After the organization meeting things at Western, athletically speaking, began to move. We gave ourselves to strenuous athletics, straining to maintain old titles and conquer new ones, striving to uphold good sportsmanship in both victory and defeat, and struggling to build up enviable physiques. Among the sports offered were hockey, soft ball, basket ball, badminton, tennis, volley ball, table tennis, archery, bowling, ice skating and swimming. Meanwhile the A. A. Reps had been busy, and by October 31 nearly five hundred tickets had been sold for the Hallowe'en dance, the gym had been decorated with 87 l orange and black streamers, and everything and everybody was all set for a rollicking time and a big success. Shall we ever forget the jiving jitterbugs and the kicking Conga line? After the dance major sports began to shape up. Hockey, more popular at Western every year, led off the season. Year, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams all had the thrill of an open field, a curved stick, a ball, and spirited players, if not that of victory. Watch the birdie Knot the photographerdsj then sounded the call, 'fLet's play badmintonli' Badminton, seemingly mere child's play, has all the breathtaking excite- ment and work of tennis or volley ball. Even though Western's hockey season proved to be a little unfruitful, our badminton team brought home the baconv by winning the city championship in the lnterscholastic Badminton Tournament. For A. A. fans Thursday was THE DAY, for then the Bowling and Ice Skating Clubs held their weekly get-togethers. During the winter months Western,s Sonja Henies donned their prettiest skating costumes, sharpened their blades K of skates, of coursel, and flocked to Carlin's Iceland to practice the figure eight. All year round on Thursdays, the Bowling Club met. Because of the fire at the Midway Alleys, the members of the club in '42 'fkept 'em rollingw at the King Pin Alleys. The girls on the varsity bowling squad were constantly in action, either practicing their technique or pitting their skill against the teams of other schools. After the Christmas holidays basket ball lingo was heard in athletic circles. Teams from other schools trekked to Western to compete with our Varsity and Junior Varsity squads. The Western Table Tennis Team vied with the Badminton Team by winning the lnterscholastic Tournament. Western in defeating Forest Park won the championship by thirteen victories against two losses. Rhoda Shur was undefeated in five singles matches, while the doubles crown Went to Anna Davis and Ruth Goldstein. Mildred Rodman was also an active player on the table tennis team. This year's spring sports, archery, soft ball, volley ball, and tennis, are due to begin as our record of athletics goes to press. The hopes of every senior are high, and the prospects of repeating the successes of the spring of '41 are favorable. LJKQQM-YZ-owaawa 9 j-415 Mg-aim -fbi: MODERN DESIGN MAKES THE BIG DIFFERENCE Since Western has changed from a Female High School to the coed school of today fWe do have Dr. Blake, lVIr. Marston, and Mr. Calderj , and long bobs have given away to feather cuts, and peace time has been diverted to war time, it can be seen that modern design makes the big difference. Little Red Riding Hood lived with her mother far back in the Ten Hills. One day Little Red Riding Hoodis mother said to her, '4Little Red Riding Hood, take this priceless bit of gasoline to your grandmother to fill her cigarette lighter. You 'iff .. E -M--x 8. I i A ff X44- -- , X' I- NV ? 'U Ni.-..T - will have to go through the wilderness, so watch out for the wolves. I dig you, Momf' said Red Riding Hood, and she shagged on out. Red Riding Hood's Mommy was right. She hadn't gone very far into the wilds before a wolf drove up in a snazzy convertible and yelled, '6Hi gate, is your hat on straight? Why walk when you can ride? Red Riding Hood thought to herself, 'gMy mamma done 'tol me- If I do it, I get a whippin' . . . I doold it. Red Riding Hood told the wolf that she was going to her grandmother's. Thrill, thrill, said the wolf sarcastically. 4'Listen herein said Red Riding Hood, 'glVIy grandma's no square from Delaware, and as a gate sheis far from rusty. She's really hep to the jive. Wait and see. They found grandma in the living room swinging on down with a bunch of hep cats, while the rest of the ,gators beat the skins and went out of this world on the licorice stick and the dog house. Who's that you got with you, Red Riding Hood, a jerk from Albuquerque? No siree, grandma, he's strictly on the solid side. Can't you tell by his zoot suit with the drape shape? After hearing him give out with Boogie Woogie, eight to the bar, grandma agreed that he was no icky. You're as solid as a stonewall, Jackson. With grandma's oliicial approval, the wolf was accepted into the record sessions, and they all swung happily ever after. . -ll And now good-bye... Good-bye to slamming locker doors and air-raid drills. Good-bye to the crowded cafeteria and the cold gym floors. Good-bye to midnight cramming and history term papers and hydrogen sulfide. For us the old order passes and with it deficiency cards and two-of-nine bells and Wednesday morning assemblies. Behind us are muddy grounds and Service Club badges and daily bulletins and everlasting committees.
