But fo desire wisdom and not know how fo find if is o tragedy. esiward Ho! Westward I-Io! Westward We, the students, remember, our memories will be with us as long as we have feeling and thought. We do not need material things to keep Western alive for us. But of what stuff are memories made? Memories are the flowers that bloom from the seeds of actions, and as years go by they remain in our minds merely as translucent petals weaving through our conscious thoughts. Western should not come to be a wisp of clouded thought that touches our minds and lingers briefly only to vanish again into the haze of half thoughts. We must, then, strive to chain Western to us completely. We must create here a tangible retainer filled with pleasurable things to give substance to our half remembered thoughts and to clear the haze and permit us to re-live our days at Western. ln these, the pages of WEST- WARD HOI, we sow the seeds of our actions, that they may flower and re-bloom again and again as captured memories. Wisdom implies knowledge and understanding. The pity in lacking the desire for wisdom, the tragedy in not knowing how to find it, are things to ponder. The quotation which you have used is profoundly true. In this present age we are traveling fast toward an uncertain destination. We cannot conceive of the future of life on this planet even a decade from now. We will need women who seek wisdom and who use the wisdom that is theirs to guide the world in the way in which it should go. l congratulate you on the perception that was yours when you chose the theme. As you follow the search for wisdom-and it is a never ending one--be mindful, however, of its two-fold nature. There must also be understanding. It was expressed many centuries ago in these words, an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad. Only when you combine the two-knowledge and understanding-will Western have served you in the best fashion. We see you leave with real regret, and we hope that you will return to share many happy occasions with us. May the years spent at Western have provided you with the wisdom that will make your lives successful ones, and may you keep your devotion to Western's ideals and contribute your best to your home, your city and your country. Sincerely yours, llw12'l2.BJ? Vice Principal, William I-I. DeWolff Class Counselor, Dear Seniors: As you leave, I should like to add my word of con- gratulations and good wishes to those of your many friends. I am sure that you are proud of the reputation of the school, and like a host of others who have preceded you, you will add to the prestige of Western High School by your accomplishments, whether this be in further educa- tion or on the job. Whatever you do, you will be secure in the knowledge that the high standards you have met here will be a source of strength and inspiration to you. Best wishes to you. Sincerely, lU,'fffa.... M .Lau S .lean B. Wheeler To the Class of '63: It was with many misgivings last June that I assumed the counseling of this yearis graduating class. Now I realize that I should have missed a most pleasant and interesting experience had this not have happened. You girls have welcomed me and I have come to know you better than I ever thought possible in our brief time together. I have been impressed by your friendliness, your cour- tesy, your enthusiasm and your ability. I shall miss you and remember you with affection as though you had been mine', from the time you entered Western. Most sincerely, 15. APPRECIATIQN MVS- H3261 Baer Mrs. Edna Lilienfeld Four long years have passed since the first gangling members of the class of 1963 entered Western. We came here frightened and unsure. As we plunged into the turmoil of year activities, we were grateful for the guidance and assistance of our advisors. Now, as we look back on our years here, we remember their patience and understanding, and we realize the debt of gratitude that we owe them. The class of 1963 now wishes to express its sincere appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Hazel Baer and Mrs. Edna Lilienfeld. Miss Roberta White .sr .yy There is another person to whom the class of 1963 would like to express its sincere thanks-Miss Roberta White. Before her retirement Miss White counseled and advised us through the many crises we experienced in 9 our first three years. Her assistance lessened the immedi- ate strangeness we may have felt as new-comers to Westerri High School. Q.: in ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Reading makes a full man, confer- ence a ready man, and writing an exact manf, FRANCIS BACON Dedicated to these ends, Western's English Department zealously under- takes the perfection of the above skills. Classroom analysis of literature serves to broaden reading ability and stimulate interest in outside reading. Our library fulfills the academic and recreational needs of such inspired students. Con- ference, whether formal reports, or spon- taneous classroom discussions, is en- couraged. Those talented in composition find expression in the creative writing class. If Macbeth serves to make us fullg magazine reports readyg and term papers, exactg then Western students are all Sir Bacon could hope for. The study of mathematics inculcates the objectivity, mental disci- pline. and precision so essential in this field. Math also provides the ability to translate scientihc data into workable formulae. Mathematics. however, is not only useful to the sciences, but it is a fascinating and worthwhile study in it- self. It teaches logic, mental discipline, and furnishes the tools necessary to cope with problems arising in daily life. Westerns courses in algebra. geometry, trigonometry, analytics, and calculus are geared to these ends. The latter has only given us beingg the former has made us menf, SCHILLER from F iesco Nature has created man, and man has in turn created art. This creative ability is the factor which distinguishes man from all other creatures. It is the intent of the Art Department to develop in the student the skill to express ideas in forms of art. Instruction is offered in the fields of sculpture, ceramics, sketching, painting, and commercial design. Neat- ness, originality, and evidence of effort are emphasized in all pieces of work. An extra-curricular group, the art serv- ice club, embellishes the building with its colorful posters publicizing various functions of the school. The art depart- ment has certainly contributed to the refinement of the abilities which differ- entiate and elevate us from all other beings. MUSIC DEPARTMENT C7 Nwv -adv Nlr. Conrad G. It has established itself as the international language. Whether as songs. jazz. operas. or sym- phonies, music takes some part in our life: we express ourselves with itg we dance to it: we listen to it. Those who are capable and industrious find little trouble in securing and performing jobs. Graduates of Westerrfs business course find this especially true. Studies in such helds as typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, and accounting render girls efhcient business- women. Home- making utilizes science, mathematics, art, social science, and psychology in its most basic and fruitful form. The man- aging of the home is the greatest business in the world, and its success is based upon a rounded knowledge and skill in the managing and doing of things. The home economic faculty is ever conscious that making the home a happy and pleasant place to live is both a science and an art. Armed with their vast knowledge they create in a few short years a woman as sweet as parfait, but as substantial as a Yankee pot roast. The capable home economics department is charged with the responsibility of making tomorrow's homemakers able to assume their roles with dignity and ability. Home is where the heart isfi Home economics helps to build a strong and lasting home around the heart. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT We do not want in the United States a nation of spectators. We want a nation of participants in the vigorous life. JOHN F. KENNEDY President of the United States Automation, push buttons, and gadgets work to get things done faster, leaving our lives with empty time, time spent in sitting and watching others. Our coun- try cannot afford to sit idly by. If America is to remain strong, we must be strong, not only in mind, but also in body. Western's Physical Education Department encourages us to take part in all phases of physical activity. In this way we become healthier and strongerg we become better Americans. Mrs Mary S Bailey fseatedjg Miss ,loan C. Haven, Mrs. Eva Scott, Head. LM mm I il LIBRARY SERVICE Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested. FRANCIS BACON Of Studies There are many different types of books, and there are many diHerent ways of judging the value of individual books. This judgment is personal, and entirely up to the individual. Opinions of books are relative and a high school pupil must often have guidance. In forming an opinion of a book a background of good literature is also important. Miss Mary Horsey, Westernis librarian, helps the girls of Western not only by guiding their reading program, but also by pro- viding them with an excellent collection of good literature. x .57 , MXX x S A .
