WVESTXN ARD IIO' A NOT TOO SERIOUS HISTORY OF THE WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL THE only constant element nn l1fe IS chang Indeed nf Western were to be proof of thxs theory there should be proof aboundmg Ar a tnme when the hrst requlslte to a cultural llfe for a woman was a lcnowl edge of the dOmCSt1C and culmary arts lt occurred to some extraordlnarlly far seemg gentlemen that a great deal of latent ablllty was bemg sacrlflced ln the feminine ranks Dux homo factll And so 1n 1844 a commodlous bullclxng of two rooms was rented to afford a hxgher educatlon for females who may have manifested superlor 3bl1lflCS Thus were the humble begmnlngs of our school est bllshed and the changes whrch have been wrought ln the ensulng years are well nlgh mcredlble Ir was durmg the txme when he was prmcxpal of the Western Female Hlgh School that the late Dav1dA Hollmgshead sald the course of study required too much home preparatxon and was presentmg a srexous detrlment to the health of the student Tlmes certamly have changed Imagme a faculty member bemoan mg our fates today' It was 1n 1880 the year of h1s death that thls same prm clpal 1nst1tuted the school study perxods Ir was the class of 1897 whxch orlglnated the Alumnae ASSOCIHIIOH In 1899 a nucleus from this group came together and planned a class reunlon to be held at the Western I-Ixgh School They lssued a call through the press and found when the entire unlt had gathered together that the attendance was large Smce that memorable date slmllar groups have been meeting untll hnally all the grad uatmg classes have banded together under the one head the Alumnae Assocnatnon of West rn High School Henrxetta Szold was elected the hrst Presldent by a unam mous vote on October 18 1899 In 1900 the first library speclhcally for the use of the Western Hxgh School student body was establ1shed Books were recexved from many outslde sources until a substantlal unlt had been formed MISS BCSSIC E Klelbaclcer dld much to 8 7 cc - - - x ra - c. , , . , . . . . .
