Lizerrs WOODWORTH REESE- A Quiet Road. Many years ago, eighty-six to be exact, in a two-room building on Paca Street the Westeril Female High School opened its doors. The young ladies Who attended gradually increased in number-evidently it was an exciting occupation for them, until in Mother's time Western was one of the most flourishing high schools in the city. Its schedule was then so arranged that each period was fifty-two minutes long! Even then there were class feasts for all except the Freshmen. At that time each homeroom class fostered its own feast. During the lunch period-there was only one-it entertained the principal, vice-principal, homeroom teacher, honorary member, and some members of the faculty. This was indeed a gala affair. A section of the lunchroom was always gaily decorated, and only members of the homeroom class were privileged to attend. That part of the festivity which is really the Hbanquet' usually consisted of sandwiches, ice cream and cake, nuts, and candy. I The young ladies of the past decades took great interest in dramatics. Several times durmg the year the Senior Class presented playsg in fact, no Thanksgiving or Christmas assembly was complete without a presentation of some sort. Some Eight AAAAA WESTWARDHO! AAAAA of the titles, 'fShe Stoops To Conquerf' The Rivals, Twelfth Night, and MAS You Like It,', suggest that the School Board was averse to having school time used for plays of a non-classical nature. Strange as it may seem, Western then fostered a great many dances. Besides those such as we now give there was a Saint Valentines Masque, very popular with the girls. Eastern, our sister school, gave several dances for us, and we often entertained her students in the same way. Then, there was self-control Friday, which corresponds somewhat to our silence campaign. The classes moved through the halls the entire day without speaking. Strange to say, this plan actually worked for a while! VVESTVVARD Ho! was the result of an idea of Miss George. She suggested that Westerii publish an annual. This, although it was a modest book, was con- sidered a shameful extravagance by many. In 1909 the School Board forbade its publication, but for the '09 Class Day the honorary member arranged to have a girl appear as VVESTVVARD Ho! She was dressed as a book bound in maroon and gold, the colors of the year. Lettered on her costume were the phrases, Gone but not forgottenl' and Qur beloved. Finally, there were the commencements, which were then held at the Lyric. Every member of the faculty had the privilege of sitting on the stage. Speeches were the order of the evening. The principal, the superintendent, the mayor, and other notables found their names on the list of speakers. We can never fully realize the debt of gratitude which we owe to Dr. Becker, who shortened the pro- gram, which sometimes had lasted until midnight. Someone has said that time marches on. -lust so does XVestcrn march on, upholding old traditions and keeping pace with new ones. lt is not growing like a tree In bulk, doth 'make lllan better Img Or .S'llII'1dl'1'lg long an oak, tltrcff' lzzmdrvd year, To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and serv: A lily of a day Is fairer far in lllay, Although it fall and die that night- It was the plant and flower of Light. AAAAA The Colors of 1932 Throughout the ages, colors have been of great signihcance. Tn early times, colors were used to distinguish friend from foe. This was a most important usage during the Crusades, for a Crusader could tell by no other means than by colors whether a soldier was hostile or friendly. ln art, also, certain colors always have been and still are used to produce special effects. The colors of l932 have a definite meaning. Gold is defined as a most precious and useful metal, distinguished for its beautiful, characteristic yellow color and for its purity. The color gold symbolizes the same qualities as the metal has. Gold symbolizes purity and faith. This color was highly respected by the earliest civili- zations, to whom it represented the goodness of God. Gold also signifies glory, wisdom, and constancy. Associated with the gold in our class emblem is bliick. Do not think that black, which is usually considered dull and gloomy, symbolizes anything base or shameful. Vlle. the Class of l932. regard the color black in its best sense. To us it does not represent mourning, evil, or despairg but prudence, steadfastness, and wisdom. Let us carry through our lives the beautiful symbolism of the black and gold, and let us live up to the meaning of the colors of l932. Creed of 1932 I believe in the VVestern High School, and in working for it. T believe that a girl gets from her school experience just what she puts into it, and that no girl in the Class of l932 is a failure until she has lost faith in herself. I believe in courtesy, in kindness, in truth, in refinement. and honest effort. I believe there is an honored place in this school for every l932 girl who is ready to fill it, I believe T can make myself worthy. I am going to begin-now-wtoday. AAAAA Glee Club The VVestern High School Glee Club has had an especially pleasant and active year under the guidance and direction of Mrs. Lucille Tingle Masson, Instructor of Music at Westerii. The First important event of the club was participation in the Christmas Assemblies, considered to have been among the most beautiful and impressive ever given in the school. The Christmas program was repeated for the public on Friday evening, December eighteenth, by the club and orchestra. On December twenty-first, the Glee Club held its Christmas party. The third and fourth year members of the club were afforded real pleasure in being selected to sing with the graduates at the February commencement. Our annual radio broad- cast was scheduled for April twenty-second. Next came the presentation of the operetta Cinderella, by Harvey WOYtlllI1gtOH Loomis, early in the spring. The proceeds will be devoted to providing musical scholarships for talented graduates. To conclude the year a party will be held, probably in the form of a picnic to Bay Shore. AAAAA Junior Play Let us turn our minds back a year--to March 29, 1931. Our school auditor- ium is filled, for this is one of those days with one of those plays that are seldom , forgotten. lt is Junior Day. The Class of V932 is pre- senting one act of The Romancersf' by that cele- brated French playwright, Edmond Rostand. The play has the roman- tic atmosphere of the late Eighteenth Century, and both costumes and stage- setting are elaborate. The development of the entire act is set in a beautiful French garden. The story is an old one, yet it seems ever new. Sylvette and Percinet are madly in love with each other: thinking their fathers to be mortal enemies, the young lovers constantly fear that their devotion to each other will be discovered. The gardens of Monsieur Pasquinot and Monsieur Bergamin are ad- jacent. and it is at an inter- vening wall that the lovers meet to read Shakespeares Romeo and -Tulietv and to liken their love to that of those famous, ill-fated sweethearts. However, Sylvette's father and l'ercinet's father are really friends. They know that young people do not very often carry out the wishes of their parents: therefore, they feign a mortal hatred for each other. with hopes that their children, seeming to do so against the parents' wishes. will fall i11 love. It happens as the elders wish. The two fathers plan a magnificent abduction of Sylvette-a Hfirst-class abduction, with masks, dark mantles, torches, and music, and a sedan chair. The gallant hero Percinet saves Sylvette from her abductors. Monsieur Vasquinot and Monsieur Bergamin are so well pleased at Percinefs exhibition of bravery that they willingly give their consent to the mar- riage of Sylvette and l'ercinet. The costume and plot of The Romancersn captivated the audience-yet what would the play have been without the interpretation given it by the cast? Limited space will not permit our mentioning the merits of all. XVe can only say that no more capable persons could have been chosen for the heroine and the hero than Elizabeth Rosenthal and Helen Lawrence. ,-'Xnd shall we ever forget Ruth Kreis's sense of humor?
