XXL-EIWWQ IWHWSXXEU EAXX j f7Vw1nzcy . gwcgfnight AN APPRECIATION Miss Nancy J. McKnight, who retired from the Western Faculty in June, 1930, came into the service in the early years of the present Western High School. A graduate of- Wellesley College, she had had experience in teaching in New York City and in Oxford, Ohio. In her long career, Miss McKnight's contributions to Western and to the school system were varied and valuable. In her classes, a love of her subject, Mathematics, joined to a command of clear exposition, made her teaching real art. Her perfect clarity and great patience resulted in unusual success in her classes. The highest tributes are paid to the rare quality of her work by return- ing Alumni whose later experience has perfected their realization of its value as a foundation for their study of higher Mathematics. Miss McKnight had a keen sense of justice and a sincere desire for the highest good of her pupils. Many improvements in school administration throughout the system are due to Miss McKnight's initiative, clear thinking and patient effort. ' Love of justice, unfailing courtesy and ready sympathy marked her rela- tions with her colleagues. In every phase of her life at Western, in school organizations as member and officer, and in the community, Miss McKnight rendered valuable service. Her fine scholarship, rare personality and high character have left a lasting im- press on us all. May many rich years of leisure be hers! Nineteen

XXL.-Elwlml WHISSXXHJEAXX As the class of 1931 leaves the halls of Western I am wondering-what has it given to us, and also that which is probably more im- portant, what have we fthe facultyj given to 1931. Dur- ing their sojourn of four years with us, have the mem- bers of our S e n i o r Class learned to establish habits and principles of living which will conserve and i m p r o v e their health: have they ac- quired habits of hard intel- lectual work which will help them through college and their after life: have they learned to play, that is, to be released from the mental or physical activity that is or may be their daily grindg have they learned to love the good and the beautiful in art, in music, in nature and in life? 'R QTEMMQ- To you graduates in June, 1931, comes the distinction of constituting the largest class in the history of the Western High School. With this distinction comes, however, the necessity 4? of stressing the age-old argu- ment quantity and qual- ity, We feel sure that later on we shall be able to point with pride to the many of you who, despite crowded conditions, maintained a high degree of excellence in your class work and at the same time were participating citi- zens in a Well-rounded school life. Good luck to you! tl, 1 Eighteen
